Tucker Carlson's MSNBC Show Cancelled. It was just a matter of time...
Insiders tell TVNewser Tucker Carlson's 6pmET show Tucker is getting the axe, but Carlson stays on as a political contributor to all MSNBC shows at least through the 2008 election. The official announcement, expected tomorrow, will include details about who will replace Tucker at 6pmET as well as other political programming additions. Sources say the network is going to beef up its schedule with more NBC News talent.

In recent days, Jossip, as well as other blogs, ratcheted up the talk that Tucker would be replaced "for a new project." In its 33-month run, Carlson's show has had two names, four time slots and multiple formats. At 6pmET, it builds on its Harbdall lead-in on some days, but loses audience on others.

Carlson is expected to host the show through next week, with his new role and title to take effect March 17. We're told he'll also be reporting from the campaign trail.

21. I disagree because she is too biased on a lot of issues
I'd like to see someone that reports fair and unbiased newsworthy issues. For example, Lou Dobbs is someone I like to watch. However, just now, he had a couple evangelical guys on and I thought he suggested gay marriage was not family values. Did anyone hear him say that? If so, I'll drop him from my TV.

We do need some balance with all the RW crap coming out of CNN and Faux.

69. Or female host. (I could live w/ a pundit-free show)
Mika Brezinski seems to be a fairly objective voice on the otherwise loathsome Morning Joe show. Wouldn't it be *wild* for MSNBC to have it's own "The View"-like show, but focused on politics and relevant issues?

Mika Brezinski
Rachel Maddow
Amy Robach
Monica Novatni(?)

in New York and on most AirAm stations. She's already on for three hours in some cities, where David Bender joins her as co-host. AirAm wants her to continue with MSNBC, however, because it's great publicity for the station. So on the days she has to leave to work there, Bender will take over her third hour.

Ever since she moved from a.m. to p.m. our local station hasn't carried her. I really miss her. We have Randi's show delayed at 6 p.m. and Ed's show delayed at 3. I'd rather ditch Ed altogether, get Randi live and then get Rachel. But then I'm not the program director.

57. I figured something might be up
MSNBC has really glammed her up. She's looks really great, but part of her shtick was that she dresses like a first-grader and didn't wear make-up. So, I wondered if she consented to the makeover because they told her they were prepping her for bigger things-- that the hassle of being prettied up would be made up for in extra zeros on her check.

She has done a really great job in her role. She knows how to blend into the format she's in, rather than trying to dominate the airtime and going McLaughlin Group, which no one likes, on her fellow analysts.

She'd be a great addition. I think she'd be a natural.

I did not agree with a lot of his personal views, but I actually liked his show. For the most part the dork is a libertarian, which I consider to be a more honorable enemy than the standard neoconservative theocrats.

He at least told Kiki McClean that she was patronizing him, which she was. I really dislike her.

56. I hate that little bow tie wearing smart ass.
Edited on Sun Mar-09-08 07:41 PM by Jamastiene
I usually don't hate just anyone. What can I say though. He has earned it. Best moment ever: When Hillary Clinton's book sold over 1 million and she came on Crossfire with a shoe shaped cake. He said he would eat his shoes if she sold over 1 mil. She did and surprised his smart mouthed little ass. He acted oh so embarrassed too, for the first and only time ever. I loved that.

58. If they want someone to get ratings
bring back the guy they shouldn't have let go in the first place and admit your blunder.

Is the caller there?

60. About time
That was a waste of a good time slot. I, for one, will be glad to see that sniveling little asshole lose his show. I think I'll actually watch it on Monday.

I'm hoping they give Rachel a chance.

63. Excellent. News giving near-unanimous joy in this otherwise rancorous forum.
Now we can only hope that Tucker is offended by his demotion, and will seek-out a new show over on Fox, the wastebasket of TV punditry.

65. It's about time.
I've probably written MSNBC about 4 times making a case for dropping his show to be replaced with one hosted by Maddow or Shuster. I mention this not that I believe any of my letters made a bit of difference, but I'm wondering just how many the network had been receiving. I'm sure a lot.

That and the fact that his show stinks, it's the antithesis of where they're trying to go, and his ratings are in the sewer. Gload he'll be gone.

Tucker Carlson unintentionally reveals the role of the American press
    Glenn Greenwald

    (excerpting...)

CARLSON: What -- she wanted it off the record. Typically, the arrangement is if someone you're interviewing wants a quote off the record, you give it to them off the record. Why didn't you do that?

PEEV: Are you really that acquiescent in the United States?

CARLSON: Right. But I mean, since journalistic standards in Great Britain are so much dramatically lower than they are here, it's a little much being lectured on journalistic ethics by a reporter from the "Scotsman," but I wonder if you could just explain what you think the effect is on the relationship between the press and the powerful. People don't talk to you when you go out of your way to hurt them as you did in this piece.

Don't you think that hurts the rest of us in our effort to get to the truth from the principals in these campaigns?

Credit to Tucker Carlson for being so (unintentionally) candid about the lowly, subservient role of the American press with regard to "the relationship between the press and the powerful." A journalist should never do anything that "hurts" the powerful, otherwise the powerful won't give access to the press any longer. Presumably, the press should only do things that please the powerful so that the powerful keep talking to the press, so that the press in turn can keep pleasing the powerful, in an endless, symbiotic, mutually beneficial cycle. Rarely does someone who plays the role of a "journalist" on TV so candidly describe their real function.

I was wondering if Tucker would experience any fallout from such a pathetic admission of a total lack of journalistic principles. Looks like maybe so.

edit: p.s. Video of the exchange over on Huffington Post, here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/07/tucker-to-journalist-that_n_90506.html

76. Glad to hear the brat is off the air. He's just terrible and also biased.
But, even if he didn't hate liberals, he's still a really bad host. He talked over his guests and was more like a 6th graders than a professional.

Of course, I'd love to see rachel get it, but do they have the balls to give it to her?

Most male TV execs don't want to have to win any arguments with her, I'll wager. I know I wouldn't even try.
