Would Obama be where he is if he were not half white?
Personally, I don't give a shit what color he is, but I wonder whether his half-whiteness is what makes him a "safe" black candidate to white America.

Remember, when this campaign began there was an issue with black Americans saying he's not black enough.

What's changed? Now he's getting a free ride because he's black?

18. Thank you.
At least he's overcome the "not black enough" meme. Ferraro can kiss my lily white ass.

26. Good point!
Unfortunately I'm just a lowly Euro-Mutt. I am, however, the product of two Irish grandmothers, so I do have the O' side of me in common with O'Bama! gO'Bama!

Thanks for the levity on a completely infuriating night.

23. Google "one drop rule", but also read "dreams from my father"...
...for a somewhat more subtle and well-thought-out take on the issue of multi-racial-ness.

7. Haven't you been paying attention? He's winning because
both candidates have such similar platforms that people are drawn to the most optimistic, charismatic, cool, cute, new, fresh, non-confrontational, non-polarizing candidate out there. Simple!

19. He certainly had advantages being raised by his white mother and grandparents in Hawaii...
...as opposed to having grown up in an inner-city neighborhood or the rural South. His background makes him upper-middle class.

His parents were both college educated. He had the advantage of going to excellent schools. Prep school in Hawaii, Occidental, Columbia, Harvard Law.

Looks good in a suit.

20. He spent the years 10-18 in HI. Prior to that, he
lived in Indonesia though he was born in HI. However you want to mute his childhood, have at it. Have you ever heard of haoles? I have, and they aren't treated well in HI, some of them.

Obama was born on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. (born in Nyangoma-Kogelo, Bondo District, Nyanza Province, Kenya,<8> of Luo ethnicity) and Ann Dunham (born in Wichita, Kansas).<9> Throughout his early years, he was commonly known at home and school as "Barry".<10> Obama's parents met while both were attending the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where his father was enrolled as a foreign student.<11> They separated when he was two years old and later divorced.<12> His father went to Harvard University to pursue Ph.D. studies, then returned to Kenya, where he died in an automobile accident in 1982.<13> His mother married another foreign student, Lolo Soetoro, and the family moved to Soetoro's home country of Indonesia in 1967.<14> Obama attended local schools in Jakarta from ages 6 to 10, where classes were taught in Indonesian.<15><16> He then returned to Honolulu to live with his maternal grandparents while attending Punahou School from the fifth grade until his graduation in 1979.<17> Obama's mother, Ann, died of ovarian cancer and uterine cancer a few months after the publication of his 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father.<18>

22. Would Obama be where he is if he were not a genius?
Obviously he got excellent communication skills. I can tell he's been reading Luntz and Lakoff.

He wins my John Boyd seal of approval as a strategist. Love his grassroots campaign. Two thumbs up!!!

Being half white makes him more attractive to White voters. pure black candidates have not been successful at a national level.
