Great story about Obama from Bill Richardson!
Obama is all class. You can't help but to like this guy...

Bill Richardson's tough call, short of endorsement
by Scott Martelle

He came close. Oh, so close. But Bill Richardson stopped just short Monday of endorsing one of his former competitors for the Democratic presidential nomination -- a coy game he's played before.

Speaking at a conference on rogue states and diplomacy at the UCLA Ronald W. Burkle Center for International Relations, Richardson was asked by moderator Maggie Farley, who covers the United Nations for The Los Angeles Times, who he thought was best able to handle both the domestic and international challenges facing America.

Richardson, as New Mexico governor, is a Democratic Party superdelegate, and he demurred on the question. But his answer still served as tea leaves to be read.

"I'm truly conflicted," Richardson said. "I'm torn. I see ... a lot of loyalty I owe President Clinton. He made me U.N. ambassador. He made me secretary of energy. He's treated me extremely well. But you know what? I paid him back. Because I served well."

Richardson described Hillary Clinton as "enormously capable ... but I did run against her."

Then he focused on Barack Obama, someone he said "I don't know as well. But I think there's
something that is very special about this guy, that is good."

Richardson related an anecdote from one of the debates:

He had fielded a question and then, as the next point went to another candidate, leaned toward Obama next to him on the stage and whispered, "'Boy some of these debates really boring, aren't they?' Or something like that. And he said, 'Oh god, yeah, you're right.' "

As the two were whispering, a question suddenly veered back to Richardson -- who hadn't been paying attention. "I looked at Obama and he says 'Katrina. Katrina.' And I go back and say, 'Well, my three-point plan on Katrina is ...'

"Obama could have thrown me under the bus. But he didn't. So I said, 'Thanks, Obama,' and he said, 'Just listen next time.'"

I have predicted probably a half-dozen different veeps for Obama, but I think Richardson would make a ton of sense as VP.

54. It's a solid ticket
and I'd definitely be on board.

Why, though, is Biden out of the running? Just curious as to why nobody mentions him as a possible Obama running mate.

I haven't seen it yet. If he gets the nomination he'll get my support. I hope the blind naivete of his supporters hasn't missed something (by accident, or on purpose.) Otherwise cute story.

16. This is actually an excerpt of a longer story that was reported a couple of weeks ago
He went on to say that he gets lots of calls from Bill and everyone in the Clinton campaign first telling him that he is ungrateful

because he doesn't appreciate what the Clinton's did for him and then they ask him what he wants anyway?

He compares it to calls he gets from Obama because it is just Obama calling in personally just to touch base with him ask him his

opinion. It was one of the most revealing articles in the whole campaign. Thanks for bringing this up again.

33. Now THAT is telling
I read this story, then went out to get a coffee and go water the garden (yeah, you're fascinated by this). But while I was out I was musing on the superdelegate situation and I thought that a lot of SD's know the Clintons personally and must feel a sense of obligation towards them, but the fact that they haven't endorsed Hillary en masse says that there's something REALLY funky going on...

I think it's like American voters in general: she's the default candidate, but people take a look, don't like what they see, and move on.

Obama lacks a couple big big things...

1. international experience

2. latino's votes

Richardson gets him both... and he knows it.

45. He's also got a third, major thing:
He was Clinton's secretary of energy.

I think that's also something that Obama needs a strong point man on, and I think Richardson could hook that up.

(And as a minor fourth point: he's not a senator.)

If we look at Edwards and Gore they've said nothing one way or the other. Richardson appears to want to milk it by making these type of statements. I say shit or get off the pot. I really do like the guy but I don't understand what he's doing here, his credibility as an endorser is all but lost at this point.
