1. It's a valid question, sort of.
Although Katrina wasn't necessarily the best example. I guess the underlying point is, why doesn't she get upset over things that are truly upsetting or that don't have DIRECT consequences on her?

14. Just for the record:
Do you know who invited Obama to fly with her to view the aftermath of Katrina? Yep, the evil woman who misguidedly befriended him and was foolish enough to expect the same in return.

don't vote for black people, Obama is Somalian, Obama meets with former terrorists, all from Hillary's campaign and surrogates.

Go to the links here and check your time line. Hillary's campaign has been playing the race card since last year.

Ferraro's was more like the jack of spades. She didn't pull out an ace (which would have been the N-bomb), but her card was pretty high.

There's nothing that I can stand less than some of the candidate apologists on this board. There's no logical way that any candidate can be supported 100% of the time. You have to suspend all rationality to believe that your candidate has never screwed up.

18. The race baiting began in November of 2007
Michele Obama: "black America will wake up." We now know what the Obama plan to get nearly unanimous black support was: swiftboat the Clintons--just in time for the SC primary.

Obama surrogate Charles Barron: blacks should vote for Obama because he is black.

Chris Rock: vote for the black guy over the white lady.

However, JJJ kicked off the official beginning of the race card strategy in January.

19. Obama hasn't race baited as much as Clinton has gender baited
She talks about being a leader on women's issues all the time. I don't mind a little pandering to a demographic. I have a problem with playing the victim from jumping the gun on claims of racism/sexism.

27. Both have done it the difference is only Obama swiftboated the other
Hill has had the class not to swiftboat Obama as a sexist. Imagine if she succeeded. Obama went to 85-90% with blacks after the swiftboating. If Hill could get similar numbers among women it would be all over...

The one major candidate who didn't play the race or gender card was Edwards. I supported him but apparently the race card and gender card is very effective. One of the lessons from his demise is a candidate better play those cards if his opponents are.

32. Let's not overuse the word "swiftboat"
Edited on Wed Mar-12-08 04:53 PM by Cant trust em
We haven't seen anything on either side during this campaign that comes anywhere close to the swiftboat attacks of 2004. There hasn't been any entirely fictious claims made up by either candidate to besmirch the other. The swiftboat vets didn't exist until Karl Rove's brain sparked some fiction. Let's only use it when it's that bad so we can still apply the full force of the word when we see it.

Most the the Clinton race-bait blame game has been played by the media for Obama, not by Obama himself. Pre-South Carolina there were a couple of flaps (the MLK thing, the fairy-tale thing) that Clinton was getting blamed for using race baiting. I wasn't seeing it, but she was getting blamed. Obama was getting blamed for returning with the race-victim card and I had a tough time finding the Obama response. He was largely silent instead of making a big kerfuffle about it.

Now onto Edwards. He has no card to play. It's tough to play the race or gender card when you're a white male. I really like JE and I hope he does something great with the rest of his career.

42. "He was largely silent"
He stepped in after mission accomplished in So. Carolina and made some tepid remarks, just like today, after he won Miss. He brought up all the old imagery pre-Miss and then today told everyone that there was no race problem.

Again, mission accomplished.

Compare that to McCain, who shut down anyone making any sort of remarks about Obama. He shut it down instantly. Yeah, big bad McCain. Obama has no decency in comparison.

54. Hillary's campaign is the one that seems to keep bringing it up
or at least her surrogates, but these days there is no line between the two. You act like Hillary isn't profitting from claims of sexism. This week she's on the cover of Newsweek and there are a dozen essays about women in it. It's going both ways and I don't really think that either of them should stop when it's an obvious issue in the campaign.

Rock in and of itself is irrelevant but it is notable the only comedians making racist jokes, the only bigoted singers, are affiliated with the campaign of the only candidate to make a racist joke on national television about a candidate (he did it to Edwards).

The OP talks about when race-baiting began. I pointed out Michelle Obama and Charles Barron kicked off months before in November of 2007.

Any "comedians" making racist appeals for Hillary, or for that matter, homophobic "singers"? Or Edwards, who used to support? I thought so...

It's never racist when a black person says it because there are no racist black people in this country. Therefore, they always get a pass. ie: Jesse Jr.
