***Meet John McCain's SPIRITUAL ADVISOR: ROD PARSLEY***
Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 09:26 PM by MagickMuffin

In a chapter titled "Islam: The Deception of Allah," Parsley warns there is a "war between Islam and Christian civilization." He continues:

I cannot tell you how important it is that we understand the true nature of Islam, that we see it for what it really is. In fact, I will tell you this: I do not believe our country can truly fulfill its divine purpose until we understand our historical conflict with Islam. I know that this statement sounds extreme, but I do not shrink from its implications. The fact is that America was founded, in part, with the intention of seeing this false religion destroyed, and I believe September 11, 2001, was a generational call to arms that we can no longer ignore.

Parsley claims that Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" predicated on "deception." The Muslim prophet Muhammad, he writes, "received revelations from demons and not from the true God." And he emphasizes this point: "Allah was a demon spirit." Parsley does not differentiate between violent Islamic extremists and other followers of the religion:

There are some, of course, who will say that the violence I cite is the exception and not the rule. I beg to differ. I will counter, respectfully, that what some call "extremists" are instead mainstream believers who are drawing from the well at the very heart of Islam.
The spirit of Islam, he maintains, is one of hostility. He asserts that the religion "inspired" the 9/11 attacks. He bemoans the fact that in the years after 9/11, 34,000 Americans "have become Muslim" and that there are "some 1,209 mosques" in America. Islam, he declares, is a "faith that fully intends to conquer the world" through violence. The United States, he insists, "has historically understood herself as a bastion against Islam," but "history is crashing in upon us."

Parsley, who refers to himself as a "Christocrat," is no stranger to controversy. In 2007, the grassroots organization he founded, the Center for Moral Clarity, called for prosecuting people who commit adultery. In January, he compared Planned Parenthood to Nazis. In the past Parsley's church has been accused of engaging in pro-Republican partisan activities in violation of its tax-exempt status.

So, McCain and all others who want to make an issue of preachers statements, "Bring IT On."

2. This is the main reason I object to candidates exposing their religious views
I really don't care about that subject as a litmus test for being President.

Every preacher seems to teach some sort of intolerance to certain varying degrees.

That doesn't mean their congregation believes the same way. If it does then those people have never had the skills of thinking for themselves.

4. That they are in the congregation points in the direction of not thinking
as you describe...absense of thinking skills...

5. Parsley is the wacko
who wrote that "Can a Muslim be a good American?" email that got forwarded to every inbox in the country a while back. The guy is a whackjob.

McCain embraces this guy. Obama condemns the statements of Wright. I can't imagine that McCain would really want to make an issue of statements of religious supporters.

6. It's seems like there is always a double standard with Democrats and Repubs
Democrats can't be religious or patriotic, only republicons can be both patriotic and religious.

I was just watching Anderson Cooper, and even he was using double speak when it came to the religious topic.

Everything he was saying about Barack there was negative overtones. However, John was talked about it glowing positive tones.

I really don't understand Cooper's lack of understanding of Parsley's anti-gay agenda. I would think Cooper would be worried about Rod.

If you can catch the rerun of his programming then you should watch it and let me know what you think. If I was right about the language he was using in describing the two candidates and their prospective spiritual guides.

8. There was some stuff involving Parsley in 2005 ...
There was a Daily Kos diary in May 2005 which stated:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/14/10582/0454

A movement calling itself "Patriot Pastors" is now mobilizing (mostly rural Christians) to gather thousands of "Ohio for Jesus" pastors and tens of thousands of lay people calling themselves "Christian Minutemen."

Called the Ohio Restoration Project, this group intends to take over the Republican Party in Ohio. Once they have done this through electoral primaries, they will also run all Democrats off the state map.

Their plan is to run good people out of office if they are pro-choice or supportive of equal rights for gays. In their website, these so-called Patriot Pastors will "shoot down" any politicians or candidates who they deem "vague or noncommittal on issues of abortion and gay rights."

They have transportation set up for the elderly and child care for the young to attend their "God Rallies." Rod Parsley of World Harvest Church in Canal Winchester is their leader. In his book Silent No More, Parsley outlines which issues will either drive people from office or put them in office.

I wonder whatever became of that little scheme?

10. Here's an interesting article about the '06 Ohio election,
rather long, but I'll include some quotes by Rod.

“Sound an alarm!” he boomed. “A Holy Ghost invasion is taking place. Man your battle stations, ready your weapons, lock and load!”

In the course of the performance, Parsley promised that during the next four years his campaign, Reformation Ohio, would bring a hundred thousand Ohioans to Christ, register four hundred thousand new voters, serve the disadvantaged, and guide the state through “a culture-shaking revolutionary revival.”

And from Wikipedia

Criticism of Parsley

Parsley is identified as a prominent player in the dominionist movement by both TheocracyWatch and commentator Bill Moyers.

Some have also criticised Parsley for his recent book, Silent No More because of the book's attacks against Islam and the view that the U.S. Constitution provides for a separation of church and state (among other popular social issues), and for his support of faith healing. Parsley has identified Islam as an enemy of the United States and Christianity.

Parsley was also criticized by a group of 31 Columbus, Ohio area pastors for possibly violating federal tax laws. It was alleged that he violated the tax-exempt status of his church by supporting various political causes, and that he was misusing the finances of his church for personal gain.

Author Chris Hedges' 2006 book American Fascists: The Christian Right and the War on America notes the openly militaristic metaphors Parsley has used, particularly in describing his opponents:

The secular media never likes it when I say this, so let me say it twice. Man your battle stations! Ready your weapons! They say this rhetoric is so inciting. I came to incite a riot. ... Man your battle stations. Ready your weapons. Lock and load--for the thirty, forty liberal pastors who filed against our ministry with the Internal Revenue Service. ... Let the struggle begin. Let it begin in your heart today with a shout unto him who has called us to war--not only that, he has empowered you and I to win. —Rod Parsley<8>

Parsley has also been criticised by the Progress Ohio for his questionable fundraising tactics to gain support for Parsley's campaign against ratifying hate crime legislation within the United States.

I guess I should say Thank God, Blackwell LOST his election bid.

13. Let's hope Olbermann sees this, as he's the only one in the MSM with guts to report it, as MSM still
enthralled with McCain. They still are atwitter over how he lets them ride on his now laughably named "Straight Talk" bus and be his journalist buddies.

21. Hello! Hello! This is earth calling, is anybody home?
Bashing Islam is gonna play very well in Peoria. You think McCain is really gonna run away from that? It plays much better than bashing America or bashing white people. Maybe not on DU, but I expect DU to know something about American political realities.

22. Oh no, he won't win Peoria, Obama should just drop out now
Density: 2,543.4 people per square mile (2000)

Racial and ethnic characteristics (2000)

White: 78,254

Black or African American: 27,992

American Indian and Alaska Native: 229

Asian: 2,629

Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander: 42

Hispanic or Latino (may be of any race): 2,839

Other: 1,355

Or maybe Obama should stay in and take his chances, after all there are:

United States — Population: 301,139,947 (July 2007 est.)

I think McCain will have a bigger problem with John Hagee. But Parsley does teach intolerance of a lot of Americans, who happen to vote.

It really is a shame that the teachings of Jesus have been distorted by so many so called christians. I do not think HE would be very happy with the people who use HIS name to distort his message.

25. Peoria was used by Nixon as a symbol to represent ordinary middle America
and like the rest of the 300 million, it is 73% white. Probably also 98% non-muslim. Thus bashing them, particularly as they share the religion of the 9-11 attackers, does not offend large groups of ordinary Americans. Whereas bashing white people or bashing America does.

Well, I happen to think Jesus would be pretty tolerant of everyone who tries to follow the golden rule and be a good Samaritan, but he is quoted a few times saying "I am the way ..." so calling on Muslims to change their religion and follow Jesus instead does seem consistent with his message, at least as it is understood by many.
