Iowa delegates to attend conventions; Hil bids for Edwards' supporters
BY MICHAEL McAULIFF
DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU

Friday, March 14th 2008, 4:00 AM

WASHINGTON - Remember Iowa? Suddenly, the state that started the 2008 race will matter again Saturday, and it could be the second time it kicks Hillary Clinton.

The delegates chosen in the state's January caucuses to back Clinton, Barack Obama and John Edwards must show up at county conventions Saturday - and they don't have to stick with their candidates.

That means not only are the 14 delegates won by since-departed John Edwards up for grabs - more than in all of Wyoming - so are Clinton and Obama backers.

"No one's ever paid attention to us before for the second go-round," said Norm Sterzenbach, the state party's political director. "I've never seen one of these where we didn't have a nominee by now. I really don't know what's going to happen."

The juicy prize is the contingent of Edwards supporters, and the two campaigns are pulling out the stops to get them.

"Hillary herself called me," said Edwards' co-chairman Rob Tully.

"All of a sudden we matter again," said Edwards backer Jon Heitland, the Hardin County Democratic chairman.

The bad news for Clinton is she left a poor impression with many Edwards supporters and other Iowans when she bad-mouthed the state's caucuses after she finished third, calling them undemocratic. And some blame her for the negative tone that's crept in.

"It's gotten kind of nasty, and I think most of that's come from the Clinton side," said Heitland.

7. That's utter bullshit.
The editorial page, sometimes yes. But the political coverage, not in the least.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 09:32 PM by madville
Hopefully Obama picks up 4 or 5 to the plus side from this. Will make PA that much more futile.

10. There should be a serious effort to get Edwards back into the race, via a brokered convention
Obama and Clinton are both too damaged at this point.
