Barack Needs to give a speech addressing the issues in Rev Wrights sermons
The reality is that Rev. Wright was speaking to the aspirations of black people against years of grinding poverty and discrimination. To see their hopes near fulfillment must be overwhelming them with hope, but along with that come the bitter memories of the past. I can see how he got lost in the anger.

I think Rev. Wright got caught up in this and while I repudiate his comments, compared to the massive racism blacks experienced over hundreds of years this is a tempest against an F5 tornado. I think the outraged protests are pretty lame! It is meant to destroy and diminish and demean this aspiration, by implying support for Obama is racist.

I see the white folk being outraged as laughable, really, and Hannity especially so.

I don't support Rev Wrights comments, they are divisive, they engender resentment against "the man" but I can totally see why in an unguarded moment he might let this in a sermon.

In some respects the outrage seems like white folk thinking black folk are getting a little "uppity" with Obama so in the lead.

Note, I'm a Hillary supporter, but this seems so unfair and destructive. I would admire Hillary more if she came out and said enough of this nonsense! She knows better than most given her long support of the black community.

2. If he were to do that in an African American church in Philadelphia this Sunday...
I would be THRILLED!

I mean really, it would be ideal. He just received the endorsement of the Black Clergy of Philadelphia, so it's smart, politically speaking, as well.

3. Not Wright specifically...
but about the role of faith in his life and the way the progressive values of the church have informed him as a public servant. He needs to make this a speech about Jeffersonian liberalism, heavy on the patriotic ardor, and root it in the nation's, and his, history.

He is smart enough, and capable enough, to do it.

11. No actually, I think he needs to speak to the aspirations of blacks embodied in his candidacy
It is so critical that people understand the suffering of the past, but recognize the future which we all are attempting to reach, where race truly is no longer an issue. based on the last couple of days, it still is.

he is NOT running for POTUS of the african american population. That is absolutely not a good idea, IMO. :)

This is about social justice.

For blacks, women, gays.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 09:52 PM by DianeG5385
If done right could be agreat moment. I hope he is capable of that, and if he wants to be as great as his hype, this is the time, as he says to stand up and show courage. Hey! how about on the Mall?

4. Don't you see? Barack's whole being has been addressing those
issues that he learned through life and his church, community, and family. It's never going to be perfect, but it's pretty darned good to me.

15. Of course which is why he needs to speak to that, it could be his greatest moment
I believe if he does address this directly in a speech, not only would it stop the chattering class, but would inspire many more Americans to vote for a better (Non-Republican) future.

Full disclosure, I support Hillary

If you have any specific policy questions, I can help you out. What's in his heart speaks to me in a lot of ways; check out a speech in DU's video forum, or I'll find one for you.

He spoke on MSNBC, Fox, CNN tonight; tomorrow he has a sold-out event in Indiana. He knows he's under attack and is reacting accordingly.

5. Obama certainly needs to quit saying that he was not present when these statement were made.
That is a gigantic cop-out. Apparently this had been going on for years. He can't plead ignorance.

I just think that Barack was not that interested in Wright's messages.

Oh, I'm an Obama supporter and delegate.

12. Anyone who goes to church on a regular basis can EASILY say the don't know what the speaker says...
...when they are there not less when they aren't there.

I'm a member of a WELL known church in a huge city with a famous pastor and don't know EVERYTHING the guy says.

7. These are good and true points you make. Very few people are
taking the time to see any of this in "historical context" of the black experience. It makes me sick to my stomach to see Sean Hannity go holier than thou on Rev. Wright and I tend to agree with Beckel's comment that it resembled a "high tech lynching".

I think a speech by Obama on the state of being black in America, especially given the Wright Furor and the tone of the Clinton Campaign, might indeed be a good idea. Thank you for posting this.

No offense to you, but I personally feel that the Clinton Camp is probably behind the pushing of these tapes to the media and press, so I'd doubt she'd be saying anything, certainly nothing to help Obama.

I think this, too, will run its course and at the end of the day, the furor will backfire on those who brung it :-) (the media)

:hi:

the one focusing on being black. And there is no way anyone can separate Wright from the African American Community.

It smells of Puke tactics and Hillary knows that if it even seemed she was involved, she would never get the black vote. I think she needs to make a speech too, along similar lines and shut this racist BS down. trust me it's a classic GOP tactic!

with pictures of him in his church and the pastor's BEST moments, along with the work the church has done. That kills two birds with one stone. You can't call him a Muslim and freak out about his Christian pastor at the same time.
