BREAKING: New "anti-America" quote from black minister dug up
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 03:20 PM by democrattotheend
"America is the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today."

New quote dug up from one of Wright's sermons? Not quite. That was Martin Luther King back in 1967, protesting the Vietnam War. King also said that whites were practicing "psychological and spiritual genocide" when he visited Chicago. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2008/3/15/145016/095/583/477409">Would we have demanded that Obama denounce King had he lived back then?

Obama's pastor made comments that are inexcusable, but he is also a respected figure who has done a lot of good for his community. He was not some radical pariah, as the media is now making him out to be in questioning Obama's decision to associate with that particular church.

Folks, wake up! This attack on Obama's choice of church is a right wing smear. It is a swiftboat attack and we all need to stand up against it. Obama supporters, I urge you to stop blaming Clinton or attacking her supporters and help defend Obama. Clinton supporters, I urge you to stand with us against a right swing smear instead of rubbing this in our faces and bragging about how it makes him "unelectable". They will keep attacking whichever candidate gets the nomination with crap like this, and we all need to stand together as Democrats to fight against these attacks if we hope to avoid a repeat of 2004. Your candidate declined to participate in this right wing smear, and I would hope that her supporters would be as dignified about it as she was.

So who's with me? Who will stand with me in repudiating this right wing crap and remembering that we are all Democrats and need to stand up for both of our candidates against swiftboat attacks from the likes of Hannity, Limbaugh and their ilk?

Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 11:31 AM by Tellurian
See this is the thing that is irritating to me about Obama. He can never stand on his own. He always refers back to metaphorical examples relying on them to soften the impact of a charge leveled against him... even Hillary, when it's politically expedient for him to wipe the egg off his face.

Now a lateral move likening Wright to MLK..ick! I doubt anyone is buying that Leap of Faith!

But now that it's a mainstream pejorative, it has multiple meanings. Kind of like being "Dixie Chicked".

They distorted in matters of opinion.

The Wright thing is being distorted in matters of context.

Do you know enough about the church to know if the sermons were appropriate?

7. Let me see if I've got this straight....
He attended the church for 20 years...
He considers the man his mentor....
He was married by this "minister"....
His children were baptised by him as well....
His wife has never been proud of her country....
He refused to say the pledge of alligence...
He won't wear a flag pin on his lepel....
He never heard these comments...
He never knew his minister's views....

So either he is a liar or he is totally stupid....

Either way..... he cannot be the nominee.....

oh i got it figured out.....when his two girls were small and they had to be changed obama took them to the changing room and the preacher then started his hate speeches....uh huh......i would like to know if obama was in the church on sunday september 16th and the preacher man said america caused all this and things are coming home to roost.....now obama said he never heard preacher man wright speak any anti america, anti white, anti jew, anti israel......i hope they can prove this man is a reprobate and he go away.....

Sorry, Bendavid.... you know that at least this one item in your "list" has absolutely NO truth to it.

He has NEVER refused to say the pledge of allegiance.

Please provide a source, other than the "Obama is a secret muslim" spam emails that the Hillary campaign put out all last year.

This has been covered at snopes.com.... he has NEVER refused to say the pledge.

20. even if he doesn't say the pledge, so what? I don't--I refuse to
swear a loyalty oath. he doesn't wear a flag pin? so what? I find the little flap pins offensive, as they seem to imply a kind of uncritical, unthinking loyalty, no matter what. and, frankly, seeing that smirking chimp wearing one, and all the members of his admin, with everything they are doing to destroy this country, makes me sick.

57. Which was Obama's point ... that the wearing of these lapel pins ...
... seemed to be a substitute for actual, intelligent patriotic thought and action.

e.g. ignorantly going along with invading Iraq because going along seemed to be the patriotic thing to do, at the time.

A little muslim email here, a little Christian equivocating there, a dash of black nationalist, a sprinkle of atheism... and you hope that you can convince enough superdelegates that Obama has just become too darned controversial for the general public to accept him.

8. I'm tired of Dr. King being mischaracterized as some kind of wimp.
Dr. King was a fighter in every sense of the word and with every fiber of his being. Non-violence did not keep him from fighting in another sense, and his fight was for justice. He certainly recognized injustice and spoke against it, as did Rev. Wright (although less eloquently, of course).

Sean Hannity's "Dr. King" is a convenient plaything to be dragged out every now and then and used to beat over the head those who still fight for justice. And that's all that King represents to Hannity and his fellow travelers, some of whom seem to have found DU.

At the last week has shown so very vividly.

Ever hear of Bull Connor?

He was never arrested or handcuffed. That makes him OK in your book.

Your post is as ugly as it gets.

You may not know it, but a lot of African-Americans the same age as Rev. Wright were once arrested, about 50 years ago.

122. Well, certainly not for the meaning that you inferred
The point that I attempted to make, poorly it would appear, is that I'm sure any cursory review of Wright's actual actions would reveal no more than him being your typical activist community leader.

However ill-worded above, I'm OK w/ my other posts on the Wright "issue." The only thing he can be reasonably criticized for is his apparent support, in church sermons, for a specific candidate. And I consider it unfortunate that Obama felt the need to distance himself from Wright, who appears to simply be putting voice to widely espoused views, albeit with more energy and emotion than many people find comfortable. (And it appears we're supposed to choose our candidate based on maintaining the status quo of everyone's comfort levels.)

35. To me those are the least objectionable things the Reverend said
Look at our politics and the richest people in the Country. With very, very, very few exceptions, they are all rich and white (on he national scale, even if you include State governors).

I don't doubt that white people generally have an easier time than blacks at getting a cab overall.

It seems kind of crazy for white people to object to black people pointing out the massive racial disparities in our country. Is it really so wrong for them to talk about it?

For someone from the Civil Rights movement to say these things, I find it completely understandable. Now, Obama realizes this way of looking at our problems is not very productive. He seems to look at things from a more socio-economic standard, which is definitely the more pragmatic approach.

Military/Industrial Complex and Media who are oppressing folks and that there are demons and oppressors and invaders of every color who have raped and pillaged the Worlds Poor. That's a message I agree with and that the US has been a part of it and part of what contributed to the 9/11 attack on us. But there are people of all races and colors who have been part of this. It isn't just "rich white folks." That is segmenting people of one type for hate speech. Why did he need to do this? It's preaching separatism.

Also pushing one candidate over another in Church is not what most of us would see as part of a religious experience. Pointing out that some politicians are better at their concern for average folks, the oppressed and disadvantaged would be the way to do that if he wanted to bring in Politics. But, saying that Hillary had never known fear hailing a cab because she's "white" is ridiculous and demeaning because I can tell you I've lived in cities where I had to take a cab at odd hours and I was very afraid. Not of Black people...but who might be out there looking for a woman to mug or rob. He shouldn't have brought her name into it at all...but to say that she had never been afaid being out there when she is a woman was insensitive to the issues women face. Hell, there are men who probably are afraid to catch a cab in cities at odd hours...

But you know, not many Democrats in general, and Obama supporters in particular, stood up with gay Democrats to oppose the use of McClurkin, a well known Bush backer and gay basher by Obama. I in fact sent a letter to the Obama campaign telling them my exact background-they know people I know- and informing them that I would not be rushing to defend the Jerimiah scene when that story popped if they did not apologize for using Caldwell and McClurkin and promise not to do so any more. They basically said 'we don't need gay votes that badly, thanks much.'.
So I think it is up to Donnie McClurkin to explain Wright, and I am sure he will do a great job.

54. Yep, just as I was saying earlier.... direct from MLK's "Beyond Vietnam" speech
http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/mlkatimetobreaksilence.htm

My third reason moves to an even deeper level of awareness, for it grows out of my experience in the ghettoes of the North over the last three years -- especially the last three summers. As I have walked among the desperate, rejected, and angry young men, I have told them that Molotov cocktails and rifles would not solve their problems. I have tried to offer them my deepest compassion while maintaining my conviction that social change comes most meaningfully through nonviolent action. But they ask -- and rightly so -- what about Vietnam? They ask if our own nation wasn't using massive doses of violence to solve its problems, to bring about the changes it wanted. Their questions hit home, and I knew that I could never again raise my voice against the violence of the oppressed in the ghettos without having first spoken clearly to the greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government. For the sake of those boys, for the sake of this government, for the sake of the hundreds of thousands trembling under our violence, I cannot be silent.

This whole "controversy" is an example of trivial nitpicking that the republicans place into the public forum to deliberately change political debates AWAY FROM THE ISSUES, because REPUBLICANS CANNOT WIN WHEN ELECTIONS AND ABOUT REAL ISSUES!

The Clinton campaign is gasping for air now, therefore, its supporters attack Obama with Fox News issues. It may make YOU feel better, but you're acting like PAVLOV'S DOPES.

As Democrats, we should set the agenda and DEBATE THE ISSUES. When Americans understand the differences between the Democratic and republican candidates:

95. We should not apologize for the truth
One of the major issues of this campaign is just how far off the moral compass we have gone. Unless and until we face the truth about the corporate owned government that we have allowed to come into being we will not be able to really heal this nation. We have been addicts to our own hubris and exceptionalism for too long.
What I heard the Rev. Wright say hurt because I am white and a woman. I know that that is the perception of many blacks, Latinos, Europeans, etc. My aim is to change the perception at every chance that I get and not run away from the truths that make it difficult to deal with.
It is bitter medicine indeed but Americans traditionally have had the moral strength and courage to look at themselves and their society and correct themselves. That is our challenge with this issue.

121. Let's look out into the world of harm that has been done and actually ask ourselves . . .
who has been responsible for this---??

Mostly it has been a corrupt American foreign policy ---

How would we begin to atone and account for this stolen land and genocide against the native Americans?

How would we begin to respond to the stolen lives of Africans in America and their stolen labor?

Another 100 years of Segregation?

How would we repair the whole damage done to Japan with the dropping of our atomic bombs?

How would we begin to make amends to Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos for our violent policies there?

Grenada, Panama, Gulf War I . . . a half a million Iraqi children dead.

Gulf War II --- 2 million Iraqis civilians killed. 4,000+ American soldiers.

Five years of occupation of Iraq ---

There is no question but that we have white male patriarchy made insane by its own violence.

Certainly it looks like a number of our presidents have been clinically insane ---
LBJ, Nixon --- and more than likely W Bush --

On the other hand, Rev. Wright is seeing the world quite clearly --- !!!
