Michelle Obama
Life's experiences are number one, but you have wonder about the remarks about only now being proud of her country made by Michelle Obama. Sounds like rev Wright. The Obama's probably agree with the reverend more than BO wants to admit.

24. I read a good bit of it... and, for the most part, i spoke in over generalizations
much like they will be characterized in the GE... sorry i did not clarify.

I actually appreciated her paper and considered it quite insightful, but "dont become too white" is the soundbite it will turn into, which is unfortunate.

56. I was commenting on what it will turn into and it's obvious effect on the GE...
I don't understand why Obama supporters keep calling for sunshine and roses and when weaknesses are pointed out somehow call us traitors. It makes no friggin sense.

Once he is the nominee, I will defend him to the end, but I also recognize and deal with the things that are gonna be brought up instead of pretending they dont exist.

70. I didn't call you a traitor.
And if you are trying to point out what you see as potential GE weaknesses, it would help if you'd present it that way. People might take your concern seriously. :-)

Instead, I've seen you diss Michelle Obama's paper, the Obama's church, and the interview Obama gave to the Chicago Tribune's editors and reporters. He agreed to stay until the last question was answered, and the interview ended up lasting 90 minutes. What's not to like about that?

FWIW, my respect for Clinton would increase if she agreed to a 90-minute interview with the Tribune (or the NYTimes for that matter) to clear up questions surrounding donors to her campaign or the Clinton Library. I don't see her doing it though, and I find it troubling. I would prefer to see a more open government in the next administration rather than a continuation of the secrecy we have with Bush. I see Clinton as too close to Bush in this regard.

No hard feelings on my part...not trying to pick a fight. :hi:

78. Cooley Hurd - Agreed....it's kind of hard to explain that
it takes a strong personality to succeed and not fall in with the crowd of average because one is smart and happens to be black.

It's hard to be called goody two shoes because you get good grades

or

If you speak proper English than "you talk white"

My dad was Air Force, I was born in Germany and we were stationed in England. When we came back we moved to Wichita, Kansas - so now you have my sister and I with proper British accents and proper English in the middle of a mid-west black neighborhood....

It wasn't fun to be made fun of....lots of tears...lots of hurt feelings.

We were fortunate to have wonderful parents who believed that education and proper English was the way towards success. Guess what, they were right.

Unless you have lived it...you can't criticize it.

Put In CONTEXT: Julian Bond, C. Powell, B. Cosby, Jasmine Guy Are Examples of Good Breeding.

As are many other well-known African Americans.

I mentioned David Paterson in my previous post as an example of good breeding.

You don't have to have money to be well-bred.

It's a way of being dignified and having real grace that is taught in homes where money is short and can be skipped over in some people in mansions.

Breeding is a way of being -- not necessarily in the genetics of a person.

Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 04:54 PM by kwassa
Your language is highly offensive. You are apparently oblivious to the fact that black slaves were literally bred by their white slave masters.

I suggest that you apologize now for your offensive ignorance, and find a more constructive way to make your point.

edit to add:

You seem to want your black people to keep their place and not offend your tender white sensibilities by speaking above a mild murmur. You are upset by Wright? You need to get out of your cloistered box.

Ever Heard the Expression Born & Bred? Bred Means How a Person Is Raised - Rich or Poor, Black or White...

I suggest you educate yourself and stop living in denial under the idea that you can behave however you want and then demand apologies or respect.

There are at least two Obama people in here who have my complete respect: JoshuaN. and the other person's ID is escaping me at the moment.

They have my respect, because the deserve respect, and admiration for their ability to debate in a straightforward way that doesn't drag the discussion through the mire or into the pits of those crying racism at every turn.

No apologies for genuine sentiment that I know is not racist, because I'm not racist and I'm the one who said it.

82. Speaking of someone who needs an education ....
Your education in the area of racial relations is sadly lacking.

I do think that you are truly ignorant in this area, because you don't know the history of the word "bred" in relation to this subject. Rather than educate yourself, you declare yourself not a racist. You might not think yourself racist, but your statement already has been perceived that way by several other noters, including myself, due to the historical connotation.

The expression "born and bred" is in itself archaic; criticizing someone for a lack of breeding is long gone and smacks of classism, of those who look down on others from a presumed position of superiority.

This is the 21st century in America, not Victorian England.

How About This: Paris Hilton is Rich & White, But has Obviously Had Very Bad Breeding! She Comes From American Aristocracy, but the latter descendants of the family have been completely remiss in their upbringing or breeding which they have given her.

And George W. Bush comes from American wealth, but his breeding is abysmal, and includes traitors to th US.

Does that give you a better picture of the meaning of the word or what I've said?

And I think the person who has serious issues regarding the subject is the one who cannot argue it from a reasonable perspective and has to resort to saying quote: "You have serious fucking issues, you know that?" end quote.

The list of what qualifies me to state an opinion -- judgment in your words -- is that I am American, I have eyes and ears, I've been educated, I've worked for minority causes all my life -- I'm only working against Obama -- I've said it in here before, and on other forum and in RT places as well, we are ALL black having come from a single female genetic progenitor in Africa -- who is called the Mitochondrial Eve in the science community -- and it's still pretty much a free country despite the damage done by George Bush -- is that a satisfactory resume to YOU for ME to have an opinion?

Now what qualifies YOU to judge me as 'having issues?' Your degree in psychology? What?

My only issue is to have the best President we can have for this country!

http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/ss/byauthor/77745

Interesting..hmm?

Reality check: David C. says that Michelle Obama's 1985 Princeton University senior sociology thesis analyzes the "ineradicable racism of white Americans" and calls the U.S. "a nation founded in crime and hatred." Googling those phrases turns up links to blogs, but not to the thesis itself.
The Wall Street Journal says Obama wrote in her 96-page thesis, "Princeton-Educated Blacks and the Black Community," that her college experience "made me far more aware of my 'Blackness' " and that "I will always be Black first and a student second."

63. proud
This is where I become confused, most here would agree that the life experiences of the Obama's are relevant and certainly nothing to be ashamed of,quite the contrary, then when the rev speaks about these experiences why is BO distancing himself. The only reason I can see is that he believes that this country isn't ready to vote for an African American, and feels it necessary to be a chameleon. If I'm right about this, then America should be ashamed.

84. If you want to read her senior thesis, it's linked to
here (in four parts): http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0208/8642.html

I skimmed it, didn't find the first two quotes (nor a section in which I thought it worth my while to spend time doing more than a quick skim), but the second two quotes were readily identifiable.

65. She was speaking about American politics--her words were taken out of context.
For the one-hundredth time. She has clarified that she is most certainly proud of her country. Give it a fucking rest.

Just so others know what you edited...."Think she'll wear those African heritage costumes during state dinners and such?"

Methinks the liability is your empty head.

79. we need to keep spouses out of this.
you guys don't want folks digging up hillary's spouses crap. especially with the spitzer debacle still fresh in peoples minds. you don't want to remind folks about that part of the 90's. we don't want to remember hillary looking like spitzer's wife-not quite the fighter then. so bill, let's leave spouses out of this and deal with the issues.
