How's everybody feelin' about this primary?

Me, I'm just close to panic right about now. How the hell did we go from euphoria to this godawful situation with

*a leading candidate's minister spewing palpable hate that has been shown ad nauseam on network and cable shows

*a former Dem VP candidate essentially losing her mind on every morning show that would have her

*one of the brightest rising stars of our party self destructing in 72 hours

And that was just in one week!

I'm seriously wondering if the Democratic Party can ever become sane again. There doesn't seem to be any relief in sight because everyone is wound too tight to think straight.

And here on DU, people keep storming off the website in total rages. I must have read 3 or 4 just last week.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm getting myself a glass of wine...

26. I was surprised in NH regarding sexism. Now I am shocked at

how bad race relations are. This primary has uncovered what is worst about this country. Blacks hate whites, whites hate blacks. Maybe I lived a sheltered life having never lived in a city. I never thought it was still this ugly on both sides, black and white.

28. Yeah, having a woman and a black man as our leading candidates

has uncovered double bigotry, but our party's spokespeople (some of them at least) have made it worse with some of the most politically stupid remarks I have heard. Remember Steinem with her trashing John McCain over his time spent as a prisoner of war? And Obama's spokeswoman going abroad and calling Hillary a "monster." It goes on and on. How did such sophisticated people wake up one day and get stupid?

21. But even Joe, who I like a lot, made a monumentally stupid remark about Obama,

how he was "clean" and "articulate." It was a real slip of the tongue but he wouldn't have said it about a white candidate. It was settled nicely but I thought at the time that it showed some real underlying racial memes that still persist, even in our most intelligent and capable political leaders.

You are right: if we tried to lose, we couldn't do any better than what we're doing trying to win!

23. It's not all that bad.

Obama will recover from this. He's very charming and the media love him. Hillary is brilliant and tenacious. And the Republicans are stuck with McCain, whom most of them don't seem to want. I really think we'll win this one come November.

24. It's been eye-opening.

I feel very, very good about the primary. Hanging around DU and watching former passionate Democrats morph into Republicans with fear and race issues has sickened me, but thankfully I know that this place doesn't really afford one much perspective.
