Obama decries rising racial rhetoric ~ AP

PLAINFIELD, Ind. - Sen. Barack Obama on Saturday decried "the forces of division" over race that he said are intruding into the Democratic presidential nomination contest.

"We have to come together," he told a town-hall meeting at a high school.

He cited videos of inflammatory sermons given by his pastor that are now being used as political ammunition against him — remarks that Obama has denounced.

"If all I knew were those statements I saw on television, I would be shocked," Obama said.

...

"It reminds me: We've got a tragic history when it comes to race in this country. We've got a lot of pent-up anger and bitterness and misunderstanding. ... This country wants to move beyond these kinds of things."

10. jlake, for some reason I don't trust Obama either
As a matter of fact, right now Lou Dobbs is tearing into him and calling him a big liar about illegal immigration, and, is calling Obama a World Class Panderer. He called Obama a Panderer several times and is using Fear Mongering to get the latino vote. He is saying Obama owes him an apology and that if you pander a group, do it with style.

that those who choose to continue the hyperbole about Wright's comments, and in this case Trinity United Church, have not read his comments in the context with which they were originally stated, nor have they read about Rev. Wright and others in the context of American history and various black movements.

At the risk of being rather inflammatory, why do certain posters, such as yourself, refuse to attempt to understand either context and prefer, instead, to mirror, and thereby perpetuate, the prejudiced views of Fox News and Co.?

6. And he has been largely responsible for that rhetoric.
For example:

1. Telling Tavis Smiley: "There's no doubt in my mind that if we consolidate the Black vote, that would cause a profound shift in the national polls."

2. Telling a group mainly consisting of African-Americans in South Carolina I need you to grab Cousin Pookie to vote; I need you to grab Ray Ray to vote."

And let's not forget his wife saying "Black America will wake up and get it."

13. I do
As an African-American, I do have a problem with those comments. Here's why.

1. When he talked about "consolidating" the Black vote, I felt like he was asking those of us in Black America to engage in group think. It's his use of the word "consolidate" that gave me heartburn. I do not believe we in Black America should be engaging in group think.

2. When he talks to predominantly Black voters about bringing "Pookie" and "Ray-Ray" to the polls, I feel like he's playing into a racial stereotype that is out there. There's this preception about every person in black America having a lazy cousin named Pookie or Ray-Ray.

And I was offended by Michelle Obama's comment about Black America waking up and getting it. Her message was that anyone in Black America not supporting her husband doesn't get it.

Hillary Clinton's camp has suggested that women should stick together as well. As a women, I find that offensive for the same reasons you note above.

then they are against it. Especially if it involves Ray Ray

Or Shaneeka.

11. More brilliant responses from Obama when
Edited on Sat Mar-15-08 06:42 PM by zidzi
he has the opportunity to unite us in direct contrast to hilary's endless divisive psycho babble.

"He said schools should do a better job of teaching all students African-American history "because that's part of American history," as well as women's struggle for equality, the history of unions, the role of Hispanics in U.S. and other matters that he suggested aren't given enough attention.

"I want us to have a broad-based history" taught in schools, he said, even including more on "the Holocaust as well as other issues of oppression" around the world."

The Other Obama
Michelle Obama and the politics of candor.
by Lauren Collins
March 10, 2008
snip:

Michelle Obama: "I want to rip his eyes out!"
From the latest New Yorker--a profile on Michelle Obama.

“I want to rip his eyes out!” she said, clawing at the air with her fingernails. One of her advisers gave her a nervous look. “Kidding!” Obama said. “See, this is what gets me into trouble.”

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

I just want to know where Keith Olberman and Jack Cafferty, Wolf Blitzer, Chris Matthews are in reporting this?

Michelle is talking about the former DEMOCRATIC president of the United States.

She is talking about the former head of the Democratic party.

OR THIS DIVISION??????????

( remember when watching this Obama went to the most private prep school in Oahu Hawaii..then went to two of the BETTER Colleges in the United States. Mrs. Obama went to Princeton on a full scholarship where her brother played on the Basketball team on a full scholarship..seems to me someone put the money up for those scholarships..might that have been rich people who paid for her scholarship?..then she went onto Harvard law..Mrs Obama's brother is currently the basketball coach at Brown University..not exactly the slums like their friend ran with no heat in the winters of Chicago, 11 of which were in Obama's district..yes people were left to freeze to death by their good buddy Rezko!..POOR PEOPLE...))

or is it division like this Obama is discussing?????????

The whole race/gender thing was bound to get ugly, but it drives me nuts to see the charges tossed around so casually. Yes, there has been both, but it's tossed around so often that when a real instance of one or the other comes up no one takes it seriously because of all the times it's been lobbed out there needlessly. People are tuning out to the real examples, which do exist, and do hurt people. :(
