Close. More like 1975. Two years before what was credited as the America's first television sitcom with a gay character (Soap) premiered. In fact, Soap stayed on the air until 1981. Granted, there was a smattering of gay characters during the eighties but compared to the seventies, several more.

As for that SNL sketch, no, it probably wouldn't fly on NBC, ABC or CBS. Oddly enough, a show like that might fly on Fox. In Living Color was damned bold. But then, Fox has a bad habit of canceling good shows. Regardless, cable television is rife with controversial humor, some of it racially charged. There's plenty of bad words on the air. You just have to click the correct numbers on your remote to hear them. You can use that very same remote to switch stations if you are offended.
