How some Obama supporters hurt him
Edited on Sun Mar-16-08 01:12 PM by Onlooker
Months ago, several Obama supporters (including me) and Clinton supporters, expressed concerns about his church based on articles then appearing in the NYT. We were shouted down by the Obama zealots who seem unable to handle the possibility that their candidate has any flaws. We were accused of racism, of being right-wing lurkers, and called all sorts of names in an effort to bury the issue. As a result, the issue was buried for a time, but now it's risen to the surface with far more energy than it might have at that time. In this slow election news period, talking about Wright is a great way for the MSM to fill the airwaves. I think if you support Obama, you should stop lying about him and recognize that he too has his foibles and has made his mistakes. He does not have to be perfect to be better than Clinton or McCain. Compared with Clinton or McCain, he'll still be squeaky clean, though he may not be the saint that some Obama supporters try to make him out to be. To help Obama win, own up to truth; to try to bury it by calling people names is simply a form of coverup.

And look on the bright side, he's not a Muslim anymore.

3. I've never claimed Obama was perfect
That was a strawman brought up incessantly by the Clinton-backers, to go along with the "cult" meme.

4.  I remember your threads and posts
and you were not an Obama supporter so why say you were?

I know you're always writing some kind of "scolding" posts though so this fits right there in.

8. I've always been an Obama supporter
But, I've never thought it was in his interest to paint him as a saint, only so he can be torn down later on. So, obviously, you don't remember my posts. My issue with some Obama supporters is the dishonesty with which they define him. Unlike supporters like you (apparently), Obama himself chooses to come clean on issues like Rezko and Wright. He doesn't run into a corner and start calling names (like you do) to anyone who wonders if in his years he has made many mistakes. Grow up.

14. LOL
Obama supporters need to be more inclusive and need to constantly make it clear that Clinton supporters are respected and welcome, that people who criticize Obama are respected and welcome, and that Obama's important theme of unity requires honesty and respect.

5. If Obama wins...
the nomination or particularly the presidency, his supporters who idolize and canonize him are going to be in for a rude awakening. Many of them will probably turn against him in a big way when they find out he's only a flawed human being. He's neither saint nor savior; he's a politician. Maybe a decent man, but that's all. For some of his supporters, that's not nearly enough, because they're looking for the Second Coming, not a decent president.

7. Cool, that's your opinion.
I happen to think Clinton is the least flawed. But at least you agree that it's possible that Obama HAS flaws, right? That's more than some of his supporters are willing to admit.

claiming he is perfect, heck he even says he is not a perfect man.

I do however, think it is totally unfair for anyone to attach blame on him for something his pastor said in a few sound bites. Nor do I think it's fair for people to call his church racist. He says he wasn't there for those statements, and until someone proves otherwise, we should take him at his word. He says he was shocked by them, and that he denounces, rejects, and repudiates those statements.
His former pastor has now resigned from the African American Studies group, consulted by the campaign, and is on a "extended vacation out of the country" (Makes me wonder if he wasn't getting threats too)
Sad, Sad, Sad, to have a pastors' lifes work to God for 36 years, reduced to soundbites worth 5 minutes.

The church is getting hate mail now, thanks to our media's selective sound bites. That is BS!

Here is an audio of someone who goes to that church:

This is an example of what Obama heard all those years.

13. I never understand why anybody cares about somebody else's church
Never mind a politician's. The minister is not running for president. Who gives a shit? Honestly, I do not get it. It's like people getting all worked up about somebody else's sex life, married, not married, gay, straight, whatever. It's personal. It has nothing to do with me.

15. Agreed to some degree.
It's still not a terrible strategy to at least attempt to bury and belittle the opposition. It happens in politics every day. This issue will need to be fleshed out over the next few weeks until there's some sort of consensus which people agree upon. I'm patient in that regard.
