Idea of Woman President: "This is Big Time Change" - Pittsburgh Post
Idea of woman president: 'This is big-time change'
Saturday, March 15, 2008
By Dan Majors, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

To a number of the people packed into Soldiers & Sailors Military Museum and Memorial yesterday evening, this was more than just another politician on the campaign stump.

This was history, unfolding right up there on the stage, right before their eyes.

A woman who might be elected president of the United States.

-snip-

"To be honest, no, I never thought I'd see the day," said Audrey Johnston, 76, of Scott, who attended Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's speech with her daughter, JoAnn Ferraiuolo, 56, of North Versailles.

"The good ol' boys club always seemed to have their say," said Ms. Johnston, a retired food service manager. "To come this far and see a woman candidate, this is change. This is big-time change." ......
"The last time I was this excited about a candidate, it was probably John Kennedy," Ms. Johnston said.

-snip-

Janice Sarich, a retired factory worker and waitress from Penn Hills, brought her own sign, made of two pieces of cardboard held together by a swatch of duct tape. But the message on it was the same as that on the professionally produced placards: "Hillary for President 2008."

"I'm 65 years old, and I probably won't see another woman run," said Ms. Sarich, whose priority is health care. "I want to see a woman in the White House.

"Personally, I'm on my way out. I'm not looking out for me. But young people today are not well taken care of. There's nothing for them."

-snip-

Virginia Fragale, 68, a retired social worker and attorney, attended the speech with her friend, Judy Leitch, 70. Ms. Fragale said she would have walked from her home in O'Hara to see Mrs. Clinton....

"Because I think she's the right person to lead our country at this point in time," Ms. Fragale said. "And it's a historic event that we have a woman running for president, when women didn't get the vote until 1920. I didn't think I'd see it. Not in my lifetime.".....

"I'd like to see Hillary Clinton be president of the United States. And she happens to be a woman, and that's icing on the cake."

15. Uh, because the equality gap is more significant between gender than race.
Women get shit on more than men, this is irrefutable.

You can go "oh black people have it worse off." But then the fact remains that "black women have it worse off than black men."

As a group women are more oppressed than men, the obsession with race only makes the problem worse. Veiled sexism.

19. I was pointing out the poster's point of "everything being about race."
I wasn't disputing the existence of sexism, but rather the zero-sum game we seem to play here regarding both sexism and racism.

28. how so?
You can also go "oh women have it worse off." But the fact remains that black women hav it worse off than black men. So can you not see how ridiculous that argument is? Also there are more female senators, representatives and governors than there are black ones, even when you take into consideration the fact that black people make up a smaller portion of the population than women.

Seriously can't we just be happy that both an obama and a clinton presidency would be historic and not try to elevate one big change above the other?

edit: sorry krawhitam I just noticed that I copied you, but nevertheless I think it needs to be said twice

3. I'm All For a Female President
I just want a truly liberated one who didn't
use her husbands popularity as a political vehicle.
Maybe one who hasn't advanced in life by playing the victim.

"I hate when women identify as victims, act like victims, and love victims. And Hillary, as strong as she is, wins as a victim. That is the trajectory of her career. I am a victim. Punch. So why are women whining and the identifying with being the victim again? This is so un-Tina! Hillary was the victim of an oppressive media? Of being asked the first question? Poor baby. All that good coverage on Obama was about being the victor of 11 primaries in a row -- excuse us! And is Barack playing the victim of a real calumny? On Clinton's answer to the known question: "Are you a Muslim?" "Not as far as I know?" Are you not ashamed?"

It's not like its Hillary in '08 or no other woman will ever run or win.
As the author says:

"What about my generation's desperation that there will never be another female candidate? Why? Is our gender about to die out? Do you all know something I don't? I can understand the 80-year-olds, I guess. But to me, Hillary Clinton is merely the first credible candidate, and the most flawed. And the only one not to rise on her own coattails, which is the real reason she doesn't appeal to both me and many young, yes, in their own way, feminists. And what about Claire McCaskill? She's great! And she just emerged this year! Why do we act like Hillary is our last great chance? How damaged and pathetic. I see fantastic women in their 30s all the time. To wit, Chelsea's undamaged generation. Not polarizing, like us ceiling crashers. I can sympathize, I am, too."

64. I am thrilled at the idea of a woman president. Its about time ...
and being first lady is exactly the kind of experience needed to be qualified to be president. That's why I'm proudly supporting the ticket of Nancy Reagan and Laura Bush.

67. Cynthia McKinney has experience, she is Black, and she is a woman
If we use gender as the primary reason for voting, McKinney has Hillary beat when you add all the other stuff.

69. I'm right there with you; but couldn't get the sarcasm icon to work in my post
hoped it wouldn't be needed re: "supporting" Nancy and Laura.. Just taking the "vote for Hillary because its time for a woman" argument to its logical, ridiculous conclusion... By the way, also right with you re: Barbara Boxer; I'd vote for her in a heartbeat....
