So O is gonna give his speech on RACE tomorrow huh?
It's gonna be his Kennedy speech.

He sure is full of himself. Today he wouldn't take questions about Wright and told all the reporters to listen to his speech tomorrow. He can just speak and no one is allowed further questions. Who does that remind you of?

Well, obviously, he has taken the Ted Kennedy endorsement a little to far. He is not JFK and this position he finds himself in is much different than the one JFK was in.

Obama can't preach about race to the American people, when his own preacher of twenty years, wants to damn America. Never mind the "riding dirty sermon" or the disgusting Natalee Holloway comments, or the disgusting comments about Hillary or his hate for white people, or whatever the RW decides to bring out about him tomorrow or in the months ahead.

He must think the American people are stupid and that he is a gift to us. He ought to be pleading for forgiveness, never mind preaching or lecturing us on race, when he sat in a church for twenty years where separatism not unity was preached.

He wants the American people to believe him and believe his words, never mind his past actions. Well O, just words? They meant something before and now they don't. You can't have it everywhich way to Sunday. So stop thinking you're entitled to our trust.

Obama answered questions about Wright on PBS just now.
He said that Wright's comments were stupid.

96. Just watched it. It couldn't have been any flimsier.
Gwen Ifil helped him spread the issue equally between Wright and Ferraro.

Obama campaign calls racist on one comment of Ferraro, Wright vids explode on the scene, Obama equates the two and thinks it's over.

Edited on Mon Mar-17-08 06:16 PM by LSparkle
As another poster noted, he HAS answered questions today about Wright and was on ALL cable shows
on Friday night. He's not avoiding the press; he's just holding on to some of his comments for
the speech tomorrow (not stepping on his own lead).

http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2008/03/obama_wait_until_tuesday_speec.html

He holds a press conference and won't answer questions regarding Wright, just today! Saying they will have to wait until they hear his speech tomorrow.

Obama: Wait until Tuesday for more on Rev. Wright

MONACA, Pa — Barack Obama avoided questions on the teachings of his long-time pastor in a press conference here, promising to address racially tinged comments made by the Rev. Jeremiah Wright in a speech on race in America Obama plans to deliver Tuesday in Philadelphia.

Obama on Friday denounced as “inflammatory and appalling” comments Wright made that were circulated on video clips. Among them, Wright said blacks should sing “God damn American” instead of “God bless America.” Obama said he was not present when Wright made those comments.

But reporters at the press conference sought to probe Obama on his understanding of Wright’s views about white America and why he chose to raise his children at Trinty United Church of Christ, where Wright was pastor until recently.

Obama has had a long and close relationship with Wright, crediting the pastor with leading him to embrace Christianity and taking the title for his book “The Audacity of Hope” from one of Wright’s sermons. Obama was married by Wright and his children were baptized by Wright.

At a rally shortly before his press conference today, Obama uncharacteristically ended his remarks with the phrase “God bless America.”

113. No, he takes another photo op to make a flowery speech about race. Will he call hillary a n***** in
his speech? Will he call us the United STates of KKK? Will he imply that Natalie Holloway was giving it up? Will he call us blue eyed devils?

Sounds ugly, doesn't it? Well this situation is ugly and it's not going away. He can talk all he wants and say he's addressing this "head on" but there's no way to diffuse this bomb short of Rev. Wrong prostrating himself in front of the american people renouncing his own comments. should Obama make it to the GE, these vids will be used against him day after day and people will not think "Oh, I'm not concerned because Obama told me he really doesn't agree w/ this crazy angry, white bashing pastor that he considers a mentor".

Yeah, good job guys. Your killing our chances in November.

rhetoric in sermons by the preachers... it all depends on what's going on too.. Rodney King, MLK day, Black History Month, Jena 6 and Obama running for Pres..plenty of fire, brimstone and radical talk going...believe me.

Doesn't mean I come out of the services hating or blaming white people for the ills of the world, the black community or my life.

43. He doesn't belong to a separatist church. The UCC is a predominantly white
mainstream church. And Obama's pastor is not self-defined as a "separatist", but as a black-liberation theologian:

From Wiki: "Black Liberation theology is theology from the perspective of an oppressed people. It seeks to interpret the gospel of Jesus against the backdrop of historical and contemporary racism. The message of black theology is that the African American struggle for liberation is consistent with the gospel--every theological statement must be consistent with, and perpetuate, the goals of liberation.

The theology maintains that African Americans must be liberated from multiple forms of bondage—social, political, economic and religious. This liberation involves empowerment and seeks the right of self-definition, self-affirmation and self-determination.

Methodist James Cone is still considered its leading theologian, though now there are many scholars who have contributed a great deal to the field. One of its major concerns is with the perceived historic and present racism in "Western civilizations" (especially within Christendom) and the ways in which Jesus urged his disciples to seek freedom for all people.

As with all liberation theologies, black theology focuses on those who are perceived as oppressed and/or poor. Through its intentionally particular lens, black theology seeks to contribute to the liberation of black peoples."

So, he preaches as though black people are still victims of racism (and they are), and uses the Gospel to identify ways for black people to help themselves.

Not an offensive church or theology at all, IMO, even if you disagree that blacks should have a black-centered theology--and although he's said some offensive things, Obama did not.

I guess she's not a Mass Demm anymore, you represent the Kennedy Family more than her, at least in your mind.

72. Obama owes NO APOLOGIES for what someone else said!
None!
He has no control over what a minister says.
Two weeks ago the right-wing white evangelical Pastor Hagee called Catholics whores and pagans, and John McCain THANKED him for his support. This got ONE day of media attention.
Yet, here it is FIVE days later, and we're STILL on Pastor Jeremiah whatever his name is ... because he's black.
I'm so sick ... I mean SICK of this media obsession with race.
I COULD SCREAM!
STOP IT!
black, brown, blue, purple, pink, green, white .. Who gives a rats ass!!
What about Obama's BRAINS and IDEAS????? Anyone interested in that?
Magna Cum Laude Harvard Law School Grad.
President of the Harvard Law Review
Professor of CONSTITUTIONAL LAW ....
Equal Rights attorney ....
Community Activist
State Senator
Tax Cuts for the middle class ...
Educational Benefits for children of the middle class ...
Insourcing jobs BACK into America .. the jobs Bill Clinton signed away with NAFTA.
Anyone interested in that?
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Everyone prefers race-baiting.
What a sick bunch of loonies!
For the 1/2 WHITE Obama, his ethnicity was a NON-issue until Bill Clinton, Geri Ferraro and the media made his 1/2 "blackness" an issue.
I find the whole PETTY thing disgusting!
The poor man is trying to UNITE the country, and all anyone can say is ....
"shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh .. he's 1/2 -b-b-b-b-b-l-a-c-k.
Tell ya' what.
Go ahead and vote by race or gender. See where it gets you.
Go ahead and vote for the NAFTA-loving Hillary and your college educated children will be washing dishes in a Pizza Parlor because all the good jobs have been outsourced to India! Or you can vote for McCain and send your kids to Iraq for 10 years.
And while YOUR kids are dying for nothing, remember the FIRST 4,000 Americans who sacrificed their lives first ... for a WHITE man named Jorge B^sh.
Then, get a grip on reality, you race obsessed morons!
Geesh!

29. What he should do in his speech
is stand there and read nothing but quotes from the RW evangelical pastors such as Pat Robertson, Jerry Falwell, this Hagee idiot and so many more. Then he should ask where the condemnations of these 'pastors' are from the Repug candidates, evangelical politicians like Bush and all their church members. Didn't they all rush to speak at Bob Jones Univ in SC? Fanatics on both sides of the religious spectrum are disgusting.

You hate Obama. I get it. I don't think tomorrow's speech if for you anyways. It'll be about getting past petty politicking. The press is slowly starting to get this. I liked what Frank Caffertey had to say about the issue today. This Wright thing is getting old, and after a few more weeks, you'll be embarrassed that you ever attached yourself to such hate.

and it get's repetitive.... He looks tired and certainly deserves a break...because this schedule has worn both Obama and Hillary down.

But..neither probably thought this PRIMARY would go on this long. A "break" ...it's time so they can "refresh themselves and get their messages together in their heads to MOVE FORWARD in this new climate.

If that's what you want, you should tune out right now.

He will do what biracial people have done always: mediate. Explain one to the other. Find common ground, and identify differences that aren't going away. And those who have ears to hear, will hear him.

If that doesn't include you, then that's too bad. You cannot reach everybody, no matter what you say or do.

I think you're afraid that he'll be persuasive.

81. Romney had to give a 'Kennedy speech' as well, see where it got him
and he got pretty good reviews after, doubt Obama will.

The trust is gone for Obama and more speeches are not going to regain the lost trust.

He may keep his base, and the race is almost over unless he gets less than 15% in the remaining contests.

If he does get the nomination, we will watch a landslide victory for McCain in Reagan style.

For a repub that is not popular within his own party to win a landslide victory truly will make this race historic.

Just not in the way we had all expected.

109. Romney got good reviews but the numbers didn't move for him after the speech
This may help Obama a little or it may help him. By doing this he keeps pastorgate in the news cycle for at least two more days and the issue of race. The biggest problem is the hypocrisy. He is going to lecture the country on racism when he did nothing about Wright's racism for two decades. You can't preach unity and getting beyond race in public and endorse Wright in private. Obama seems to be too arrogant to recognize this.

lots of the novices and dreamers on DU thought this would not be a big deal. Im glad Obama is going to take this on ASAP. He should never have let it get to this point, he shuld have condemned Wright once he began running for president. I hope his speech makes it clear that he repudiates Wrights ranting and blunts the sword that the right wing will use to bash him over the head with for the next 8 monthsif he is the nominee.
