More on Obama's "mentor" and "spiritual guide"
Last year when Sean Hannity asked Jeremiah Wright to defend his "God damn America" rhetoric, Wright indignantly asked Hannity if he had read any of James Cone's "Black Liberation Theology", as though only then could a white man understand and then accept such inflammatory sermonizing.

Well, what sort of God does James Cone and Jeremiah Wright embrace with their "Black Liberation Theology"?

"If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him." - James Cone, "A Black Theology of Liberation", 1970

Sean Hannity is a supreme joke, but he's to be congratulated for not taking that sort of smut literature and its proponents seriously... I wish I could say the same about Obama, for whom with the light of a little bit of exposure I've recently lost an enormous amount of respect.

3. Death of God theology has been around for a long time,
and I've never seen it referred to as "smut literature" before. What's obscene is presenting to minority members a God who approves of their abuse and disenfranchisement. That is what Black Liberation (indeed all liberation) Theology is reacting to.

and it's not a right wing blog. It's a book published in 1985.

Quite obviously, a lot of Obama supporters don't take the time to do even cursory examinations of evidence. That's why we're presently caught between a rock and a hard place with an unelectable candidate.

many Clinton supporters I know are spouting things I first heard from right-wingers. Either they are reading right-wingers (not likely, many of them are liberal), or they are getting talking points from Clinton's campaign and don't realize the original source are the likes of Hannity, et al.

Regardless. I wouldn't waste time arguing. To quote Al Franken, while context can be important, there are other times when the only acceptable context for a quote would be if it were preceded by "I'd have to be a complete idiot to say..." :eyes:

I guess technically I'm paraphrasing most of that, not quoting. ;)

I don't know how much he heard, but his evolution to thoughts of unity between blacks and whites, left and right - could only come from a lifetime of having seen and witnessed division, first hand.

He has not become a left-wing, right-wing, black or white extremist as a result of what he has seen. In fact, he likes to see both sides.

Just read this and understand the fair, balanced and intelligent person Obama is:

As a white person, I would like a candidate whose "spiritual guide" doesn't embrace a God who wants to kill white people in favor of blacks.

Obama's defense of Jeremiah Wright, i.e. that's he a "respected theologian", really begins to reek when you examine the type of theology Jeremiah Wright endorses.

"If God is not for us and against white people, then he is a murderer, and we had better kill him."

I see no problem with this statement. Any God who would 'pick sides' based on race is not the God that I was told had a 'Son', Jesus.

AS A WHITE MAN, I see this as a statement against the use of religion to justify institutionalized racism. And I will defend any minority that would find truth in that.

If certain Americans cannot give latitude to a civil rights advocate when speaking about the history of their oppression, then those certain Americans are guilty of perpetuation of said oppression.

I suppose I will be branded as voting for Obama to wash my hands of the atrocities of our past; so be it. But they are not my atrocities that I wish to rectify. My hands are clean.

I guess you could say my vote is for my fellow Americans who still haven't made their peace.

55. Go learn to read
Edited on Mon Mar-17-08 08:02 PM by Rex_Goodheart
Start by finding a dictionary, and look up what the words "for" and "against" mean. Cone wants his God to be FOR black people and AGAINST white people.

75. "IF" you knew what you were accusing me of....
you might have noticed that he said "If God is not for us..."

IF-conjunction-(In the event that: If I were to go, I would be late.)

Try using your own advice.

You obviously lack the intelligence necessary to parse and comprehend sentences.

87. Context
"For" black people isofar as they are oppressed. "Against" white people, isofar as they oppress. Any fool can see that is what is meant.

This is what is meant by "out of context," moron. You can't cherry-pick a sentence and use it to extrapolate an entire arguement. That is what fundamentialists do in their attempts to justify sexism, racism, homophobia, etc. And you are doing it to construct a lying smear against Obama. Do you think we are idiots?

And BTW, this is a staement of very traditional Christian doctrine. There is nothing remotely radical about it. Try reading the prophets.

hope all the Obamanites are proud of "their boy" (and that's NOT in a racial connotation) now that we see how his head works... now we need to know if he has Cone's book on the nightstand, on top of the Bible.

GO HILLARY!

67. Are you saying that history is wrong?
That African-Americans were not oppressed by rich white people in America? That religion was not used as a tool to justify that oppression? That African-Americans have no right to speak on such matters?

PS. if you wanted to avoid the 'racial connotation' you should have avoided it and not used a phrase that needed to be clarified.

90. RE: "If you wanted to avoid the racial connotation ..."
Precisely! Would have taken less time and effort to change the original text than to "clarify it".

Some people just can't help giving their true feelings away ...

83. Well, I happen to agree with Cone. Of course I've used that statement as an analogy for just
any mass murderers throughout history. Therefore, I became an atheist. It sounds like Cone and Wright are just a few steps from that conclusion, but they won't let themselves quite get there.

107. Apparently, you lack the sense to know
when it benefits or not an author to make up quotes. I'll make you a deal: if those passages are not in the Cone book cited I'll leave the board. If they are, then you leave. As it stands, you're engaging in a ludicrous ad hominem attack because you lack anything legitimate.
