Obama's supporters are neutering the word "swiftboating"

and I wish they'd stop. It's a valuable term when used appropriately.

It correctly used to refer to a situation where a person is smeared by an opponent with untrue allegations. The price that John Kerry's swiftboat detractors had to pay for their slime was that their organization would forever be attached to an unsavory bit of the dictionary.

Now, Obama supporters are using it describe a situation in which their hero is caught redhanded and they'd wish it stopped. The truth of the matter is that Wright DID say "God damn America" and Obama DID support that sort of rhetoric in dollars and 20 years of attendance. Truth is not a smear. Leave the word "swiftboating" out of the matter.

(Next we should discuss how the term "racism" has been stripped of meaning due to over- and misuse.)

21. Well, to be technical I would compare the Wright flap with the SBVT Phase 2 attacks against Kerry's

protest of the war. It takes something that is true and then smears the candidate, basically comparing Kerry to the most radical hippies or communists.

Everyone forgets about Phase 2, which I think also had an impact, but it wasn't as prominent as Phase 1.
