I was wrong: Barack Obama is the man for our time
No one else can say what Obama just said and get away with it. What an unbelievable speech.

I was wrong, He didn't hide from the real issues. He hit them head on.

33. Funny that you mention that.
My little 4yo is in love with Obama. Whenever he pops on the news, he shouts his name and points to him. Whenever he's talking or gives a speech - he listens intently. Sometimes I wonder what's going through his mind - he has a speech impediment, and doesn't communicate the best. But the excitement he has watching him is really quite incredible.

I was telling my husband the other day - I was 6yo when Reagan was elected. I remember before the fall elections, playing on the playground equipment with my friends - I was the only Carter supporter, LOL. But my developing life has known one thing... Reagan, Reagan, Bush - then on to Clinton clinton, and bush again. There's a very real possibility that my son will grow up with Obama setting the tone for our politcal and personal conversation. And what a very real and promising impact that would make on him/his future. The mindset that goes with a political administration - you know? The division that could end.

58. I cried when I heard Pat Buchanan...
I rarely subject myself to his horse shit but while waiting for Obama to speak I heard his screeches. What a bleak picture of the American people he has. Then towards the end of the speech I got teary again, because of the decent picture Obama paints of the American people. A tale of two generations.

:hi: From one newbie to another, and welcome! Although my preference was/is Edwards, one thing for sure is my vote in Nov, will be cast for the DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE, be it Obama, Hillary,or (shudder) a "compromise" candidate. I voted for Hillary in my (NJ) primary, but I do not, and will not, engage in the mudslinging which threatens to splinter the Party's chances in the GE--THE MOST IMPORTANT ELECTION IN MY (I am 51 yrs young) LIFETIME.

I would have preferred Edwards over Obama or Hillary as well, but Biden or Richardson even more so (still hoping Richardson will be tapped for the VP slot by whoever comes out on top). But I'm confident either of Obama or Hillary will make a good nominee, and subsequently president. And Obama did very good today, I'll say it again. Polls in PA give Hillary a comfortable lead right now, but a lot can happen in a month. It's not a boring race, that much is clear.

14. No, to the contrary, he did not address it head on. Super speech,
but just that, a speech. He did not apologize for being associated with gutter remarks against natalie Holloway, or Hillary Clinton for that matter. These comments were offensive and personal. He made excuses for Wright which were not necessary. We needed to hear more about what Obama repudiates. So far nothing. We have heard all this before from various Dem politicians and even Obama himself. There was not much different in this speech. We all already know we have been in a racial stalemate for years. His part in allowing his supporters to play the race card in SC is a big part of the racial stalemate. I think this speech, while a good speech, was neither unprecedented, except for it being a major political stump speech given free air time, nor healing. When the dust settles, I predict that the damage done by Wright speeches and Obama's initial lying about what he knew, heard, and was a part of will hurt his bid for the WH. He may beat Hillary but I doubt seriously that he will beat racism.

43. It would have satisfied me if Obama had not tried to lie about
knowing what Rev. Wright had said. It would have satisfied me if he had met this head on when first confronted by the issue of his past pastor instead of trying to dismiss Wright's comments simply as an old uncle out of control. That was disingenious and much like the political spinning and dissembling that most here accuse Hillary of.

30. I can agree with you about one thing
obviously he will not beat racism.

There are too many who feel comfortable holding on to supremacist views. It works for them.

If racism is beaten, Americans will have to make a collective effort to destroy this stain on our country.

We can start with dialog. We can ask questions and listen to others POV without condemnation.

But it's up to us to make that decision. We can't depend on a politician. He/She can only do so much. The rest is up to us.

74. I thought Sen. Obama addressed the origins of racial tension well: it is rooted in
anxiety caused by competition in a society where somebody's advance is seen only at the expense of another. People fearing for the security of their families and for their future see life in the US as a zero-sum game.

The goal is to realize that we need to work to eliminate the problems of poverty, poor schooling and lack of opportunity that affect the disenfranchised of all racial backgrounds while realizing that we are all working towards a better America.

I am a Clinton supporter, but after hearing Obama's speech, which brought me to tears, I am totally convinced that Obama should be our 44th President of the United States, and deservedly so. Our divisive country truly needs a man like Obama. I voted for Clinton in the Primary here in Chicago, but it will be an honor for me to vote for Obama or Clinton, whoever will be the nominee, at the General Election.

I used to intensely dislike him until I got past the propaganda that he just repeated soundbites and started listening to him closely. My tepid support is now intense and I've donated everything I can to his campaign.

Men like Obama are uncommon and even rarer among politicians. It was an unbelievable and badly needed speech.

I sincerely thank everyone who worked overtime to provide him the neccessity of making it.

67. I have never heard such a thoughtful, profound
and honest discussion about this in my lifetime. We as a nation, do have the power and maturity to have a frank dialog about this taboo, yet very real issue. WHile it's only a step, it is a new step forward to a better America. I feel so proud to be an American today. I am just so profoundly moved. :hi:
