I am not one of those who thought there was a lot of truth in Reverend Wright's statements. There was some, but on balance I think his "controversial" sermons were not helpful to the problem of racial division. Obama was entirely correct in labeling those sermons as representing a distorted view of the country. That view has been shaped by a history of discrimination and repression, but fostering it is still not constructive. Obama appropriately balanced the fact that Reverend Wright's view of America does have basis in the sense it reflects a legitimate anger, but at the same time it is a view he does not share since he comes from a different background. He appropriately repudiated the division Wright espoused and he should be applauded for it.
The question is now is how is the speech played in the media. Most will not have seen the speech in its entirety. Obama is now at the mercy of the press on this one. He didn't need to convince me or anyone on this board. No one here believes Obama hates white people. However, most voters rely on their esteemed newscasters to tell them what was said and what it means. It is up to them now.
