Just wanted to share excerpts from two posts topping my LiveJournal "friends" page this afternoon.
From singer/songwriter Tom Smith, at
http://filkertom.livejournal.com/788036.htmlI became an Obama supporter by default.
I now join his camp enthusiastically.
I still think he's got a ways to go on policy. He really, really should spend some quality time with John Edwards. And I will not be happy if Hillary Clinton ends up on the presidential ticket.
But damn.
Damn, that was a speech.
Did you hear it? Did you watch it? I heard bits and pieces, about half of it, just now while running errands. (Thank you, Air America. None of the other networks, not even NPR, played any of it live.) He addressed the issue of Rev. Wright's statements head-on, and then went far, far beyond that. And said a lot of the things that I, that liberal/progressive bloggers, have been saying for a long time. And went even further than that.
From writer "Ferrett" Steinmetz, at
http://theferrett.livejournal.com/1074008.htmlSay what you will about Obama. But the man didn't give a speech today as I understand it - which is, to say, something that could be reduced to a five-second soundbite. He has an essay, rife with complexities and contradictions that make up the problems with race in America, and talking full-on.
But here it is. One of the finest speeches I've heard while I was alive, and I was alive during the time of Reagan - who I didn't always agree with, but who could put things into words so elegantly that years later people still remember what he said.
I voted for him. And regardless of what happens from now on, I am proud to have voted for him. So proud I can feel the tears stinging my eyes.
More at the two links. Now I have to go find the transcript and read this supposedly amazing piece.
