I think we are going to elect a statesman.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 02:35 PM by undeterred
I had no idea the depth of this man's character until today. Squeezed into sound bites and debate questions, the whole picture did not come through for me until today. He has the vision, the character, the integrity, the intangible something that it takes to be a very great leader. He responded to a very tough situation not with blame or anger or defensiveness, but by owning it and giving a truthful explanation which does not patronize anyone. He's not pretending to be someone else. He is operating out of a very centered personality. A man like this does not come into politics very often. We need him.

3. McCain?
He's the only MAN who can win the GE...

And then there's Hillary and Bill... but it seems the McGovernites, errr... I mean Obamanites have taken over the party.

He's a Bush clone. Whoever wins the Democratic primary will be the next President.

29. we'll see about that. One thing we know is Obama is a lot more formidable
than Hillary. He outsmarted, outclassed, outstrategized her. She's a lousy campaigner and a poor candidate. You hillbots are so full of sour grapes. Love it.

4. You know - that is EXACTLY what I was thinking... Statesman.
After his speech it came to me, he isn't JUST a politician - he's a Statemen. Something far beyond the ordinary brand of cut-throat politics. Rather someone willing to risk it all to rise above, and set out to do something great for others.

6. Character? Integrity?
Yet he sat and listened to such spittle-flecked racism and hissing hatred, without comment, from his pastor for 18+ years? And is only repudiating it now that it has become an inconvienient problem on the stump?

No, thank you. That is not my definition of character and integrity.

18. I've been to this church when I lived in Chicago and I know people from the
congregation. Sounds like you live in a very isolated world from which you sit back and judge people based on media clips.

A friend and I worshipped at TUCC on Christmas Day in 1998- the service went on for 3 hours. It was wonderful, and it was not racist. There were maybe 10-15 of us white people in the congregation and we were welcomed warmly.

27. Propaganda. I actually saw an iteration of "glorious leader" as well
in this forum. For a second I thought I was in China.

I saw a guy who was on the ropes and battling back from some pretty significantly frightening poll results which said his association with Wright has cost him dearly, not someone with character OR integrity.

Everyone's got to spin, though. They're too invested to do otherwise. They think it makes a difference in the big scheme, even when it doesn't.

7. It's about time! And I agree with you. Character is what I'm looking for, and BO has grown in
that respect for me today. We don't need 'just' a capable/ready/experienced president -- which would put us lightyears ahead of where we are today. We also need a statesman, and Barack is one in every sense of the word.

24. I was a Kucinich person.
Then I was in limbo, then Obama. Now I am really happy about Obama. And regarding the pastor- well the student surpasses the teacher. That happens. Maybe Obama wouldn't have become the man he is without Jeremiah Wright, but because of him he became the man he is, a much greater man than his own teacher. Life is funny that way.

19. I will pray every day from now until November that we have him
as our next president. After his speech today, I realize that we need him now
more than ever -- even more than my first choice, Al Gore. I truly believe that
only a person with Obama's unique background and perspective can unite our country
at this point in time.

22. Like once in a generation...
Or even less does someone with the capacity to unite come along like Obama.

My hope and his hope is that people will be able to see the fullness of the glass rather than the empty. He is more then just words - he is words put to action.

America is way overdue for a GREAT leader.

33. I felt this when I heard his speech
at the 2004 convention, I was watching a future President, and he would be an amazing one. Today that feeling was reinforced. We are standing on a cross-road, we can head into the future, work together to fix what is so wrong with this country...I know it will not be easy, but I saw then, and again today, a leader, who with words inspire. Yes, words do matter, if they can inspire action.

I am happy I was able to witness this day, It is a good day to be a Democrat. Today, I am proud to be a Democrat.
