I was out at a client meeting this afternoon, and while making the 45-minute drive to and from the meeting I had a chance to listen to local NY radio (WCBS, if you're interested) to get their slant on the Obama speech.
First off, it is the only campaign news being reported today. The Fed's rate cut bounced a bit of the coverage, but it was still the only primary-related story I heard during my drive.
The story was framed as Obama responding to the comments of his pastor, but they did a pretty good job in delivering sound bites - of his rejection of Wright's more offensive statements, of his comments about not being able to disavow Wright, about his white mother, and a few quotes on the larger issue of race in America.
I heard a woman from Politico.com offer analysis as well as a political science prof from Penn State. the woman from Politico covered it mostly in terms of the political ramifications, and she said that he clarified the issue to the point where it will probably no longer be an issue in the primary but may be back in the GE. The professor spoke more in terms of the speech itself, and he said it was the most important speech of Obama's career as well as the most significant address of this political season.
I did hear the report at the top of the hour as I was getting home, and they got a quote from rightard moron Michael Reagan whose only takeaway from the speech was that he thought Barack called Reagan a racist. What an imbecile.
Anyway. The coverage was pretty positive. I think Obama is going to have quite a few people taking a second look at him for this speech.
He did good today, both for his campaign and for the discourse going forward to the GE.
