you'd think he'd just carried a couple of stone tablets down from a mountain from the responses i've been reading. sort of speaks to that 'cult' meme if you ask me.

1. Does the spin of Clinton supporters seem predictable to anybody else.
For all their talk of "plagiarism," they sure seem to like recycling the same failed talking points.

2. Hey, he gave a great speech.
Those who can't grasp larger concepts probably won't get it, though. Smart people, however, know what they saw.

27. That's pretty fucked up.
Just because someone doesn't fall in line and label "the speech" as the greatest thing EVER, you suggest they have no life?

FUCKED UP!

I thought his speech was great. Beautifully written and spoken.

But I'm not going to name my next cat "The Speech" because of it.

Get your panties out of that wad!

22. No one is "qualified" to be president
Some presidents have had no real preparation to be president and have done a great job. Some had all kinds of qualifications (like Bush39) and stunk up the place. It is a unique job and it is laughable to me that anyone could possibly be chosen or ruled out by having "qualifications" to do the job.

39. I was referring to the 39th President of the US
George HW Bush, who was, prior to being President: a war hero, long term US Senator, Director of the CIA and Vice President. If "qualifications" determine who should be president then he certainly would be the one. Yet, he was an awful President.

17. I'm bi-candidate, and I thought it was a truly great speech.
As some have said, its only problem was that it demanded a certain degree of intelligence from its listeners -- it won't be easily reducible to sound bites. But if it helps define Obama within the MSM, that will help him in the long run -- since the MSM has the ability to make or break almost any candidate.

23. That's why they're called "supporters."
It's really not important how the speech was received by either supporters or those irrevocably set against Obama. It's the group in the middle (that could ultimately go either way) that matters. I honestly doubt that many of those folks were listening. They'll make up their minds sooner or later based on some little snippet of misinformation (whether for or against a candidate) that happens to play on one of their ignorant prejudices. The people who are paying close attention right now are mainly the committed activists, proponents or opponents. Look at how many of the threads here relating to the speech are either all the way to one side or all the way to the other.

Sorry, I changed my post while you were answering my first post. But his speech did clinch it for me. I'd much rather believe in a future that's an attempt to perfect ourselves (he referred to being in the process of perfecting ourselves) than the status quo. It's that simple. More of the same, or do we dare try to evolve? I've made my choice.

54. Perhaps you should be listening to Rachel Maddow right now
She thinks that the speech was something quite special--filled with nuance, intelligence, and vision.

When I get too high or too low, I know Rachel is most often quite level-headed about things--and is almost always right. That she affirms my sense of the speech's importance is enough to make me know it's not just my Obama-blinders.

56. That's your narrow view..maybe you
think the NYT editorial is being over the top, too.

"March 19, 2008
Editorial
Mr. Obama’s Profile in Courage

<snip>

There are moments — increasingly rare in risk-abhorrent modern campaigns — when politicians are called upon to bare their fundamental beliefs. In the best of these moments, the speaker does not just salve the current political wound, but also illuminates larger, troubling issues that the nation is wrestling with.

Inaugural addresses by Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt come to mind, as does John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on religion, with its enduring vision of the separation between church and state. Senator Barack Obama, who has not faced such tests of character this year, faced one on Tuesday. It is hard to imagine how he could have handled it better."

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5141080

Or the San Diego Union?

<snip>

"San Diego Union Tribune: It's Over. Obama's the Nominee.
It was extremely unlikely that Hillary Clinton was going to overcome Barack Obama's lead in delegates, states and total votes and take the Democratic nomination, but Obama's speech this morning -- graceful, thoughtful, nuanced, sweeping, challenging, unprecedented -- pretty much wiped out any chance at all. It was a speech Hillary could never have given -- really, few U.S. politicians ever could have given."
