I am in a cult. This Kool-aid tastes good!

So I just watched the speech. I can't help but feeling like I'd walk off a cliff if this guy asked me to. When he says jump, I ask how high. Though I may agree with the politics of John Edwards more, Obama gets me more motivated. I agree with most of his issues, but it's his communication that lures me in. I'm still young, so I haven't seen that many candidates come by, but when I see Obama speak I want to get out and work to help him win. This wasn't the case with Gore in 2000 or Kerry in 04. It certainly isn't the case with Clinton 08. Obama is the first national politician that I've felt personally connected to. I'm sure that people will blow me off as naive and blinded by personality. A candidate who is able to rally people together and get people excited about their political process is special. This feeling doesn't come around that often. When it does we should harness it's potential all the way to the White House.

edit - Walking off a cliff is just an expression. Don't take it too seriously.

:silly:

Kidding aside, it was a hell of a speech.

3. "I can't help but feeling like I'd walk off a cliff if this guy asked me to"
And a bunch of Obama supporters would be right behind you smiling as they walked off the edge. This is scary.

9. That's the part this is scary, yes. For anyone to be so
enamored with a politician is terrifying.

12. this forum has shown me how many people
are really like that. An eye-opener and it explains how some people do become real cultists and mesmerized by strong personality figures like David Koresh and so many others.

18. Scary? Hardly. It reminds me of the love for FDR that I felt
all around me when I was very young. In fact, Barack Obama is the first candidate for office that I've actually been excited about since then.

The buzzword, Cool Aid, was not current then to ridicule the enthusiasm for FDR who was looked upon by many of the down and out as a savior, and who was hated by the rich, the powerful, and the corrupt. But if what I feel for a transformative candidate like Obama is "drinking the cool aid," if what I feel is "scary" to behold, then so be it. Your loss.

20. Someone typed "...I'd walk off a cliff if this guy asked me to."
And I'm not supposed to find that scary?

And even if the poster doesn't mean it, I find it disturbing the poster even typed those words.

23. Obviously I wouldn't walk off a cliff. It's just a phrase.
I can imagine Obama asking me "Cant Trust Em, I need you to jump."

"How high, Barack?"

You are a stranger to me, so I don't know if you're psychologically stable.

All I know is you talked about walking off a cliff and that was bazaar.

but knowing how totally nutty some people are on this board, maybe you have a point. I added an edit to my OP to clarify.

19. Are you equally terrified by the devotion shown to Hillary
by her supporters?

It's a fair question, given that so many here seem to be so devoted to Hillary that they won't even acknowledge that the guy gave a helluva speech today.

22. Yes, that is a fair question, and I am equally terrified by
certain devotion to any politician.

But I'm seeing most of the wacky talk coming from the Obama side.

And obviously, I'm not the only one.

11. All of the candidates, including Sen. Clinton wishes they had the power to persuade
the way Obama does. And the Clinton campaign, when they thought they had the nomination "all wrapped up," planned on using Obama to whip up enthusiasm for Clinton in the GE. I guess this enthusiasm needs to be bottled up for now and unleashed for Sen. Clinton's use only. Rarely has America had a candidate who is this powerful and we need to seize that power to make change and ensure a Democratic president. McCain cannot stop him. And Sen. Clinton wishes she could. The Clinton campaign had no problem with Obama's talent at the podium, until it was used against their campaign.

I get attacked by many of the hostile and hateful Obama supporters on DU when I point out that they are enchanted by his rhetoric and not his substance, because he doesn't have any.

10. He's liberal enough, and so is Clinton
There's plenty of substance to go around, but it's his communication skills that set him apart. It's a rare gift to get people to do things that they wouldn't ordinarily do.

Is it wrong to ask for some meat and potatoes with the apple pie Obama serves up? I have seen every debate and his grasp of foreign policy and economic issues is lackluster, but eloquently presented.

21. I've also watched every debate and most of what he says jives with me
I wouldn't support a candidate if they didn't have policy positions I agreed with. But if you give me two candidates who I like and one of them speaks and it's fine and the other blows the doors off, then that's a pretty easy call.

8. You're not the only one.
Although, I wouldn't walk off a cliff at his request, I certain to feel a connectedness with Obama. When he came to Seattle and came outside to say hi to the people who couldn't get in to Key Arena to see him speak but were hanging around anyway, it was like... I don't know he gives off this HOPE pheromone or something cause by simply being within 20 feet of the guy I was tearing up and felt a renewed sense of pride in the US that I've been missing all of my adult life.

16. When I close my eyes, and listen
I can hear Obama as our leader. He has the qualities we need, and I'm not "blinded by personality" but I can't help thinking that the personalities of Bush and Cheney are what got us here in the first place. Disposition is important, and we have a candidate who is ambitious but collected, can speak well and convey a sense of calm and strength. I also supported Edwards, but as this primary has drawn on, I've found a more presidential candidate in Obama.
