Obama's speech seems to have gotten rave reviews from the Georgetown Cocktail Party crowd
It remains to be seen how well the speech plays in the heartland with ordinary voters, but if the newspaper editorial boards, the pundits and other Georgetown Cocktail Party hangers on are satisfied, that will go a long way toward diffusing the story in short time. These people still have a lot of control over the news cycle and the public discourse.

The next time a major news story comes along (some tragedy in America or overseas, or another political scandal), I expect that Pastor Wright will be a memory. That's harsh reality, but that is the way things are.

6. Really?
How is the climate there in Philly generally? Did the speech generate a lot of buzz? Are people pretty psyched?

11. Well, tears were streaming down the faces of volunteers at the Obama office...
...when I showed up just after the speech today.

Philly and the burbs are Obama country ~ we can hardly keep up with the volunteers who want to help register people and get people to the polls. It's wonderful!

20. Saw this neat photo on Obama's blog about 100's of volunteers pouring into their offices in Philly

Volunteers Hit the Streets to Register Voters

by Caitlin HarveySunday, March 16, 2008 at 01:49 PM

Hundreds of volunteers have been pouring into our offices in Pennsylvania over the past week, eager to help hit the streets and register new voters. Yesterday was no exception, as our Philadelphia office was overflowing with fired up volunteers!

3. Well, here in southeastern PA, my 93-year old father-in-law actually had tears in his eyes
while describing to me how superb the speech was. Most amazing, he had been a very staunch HRC supporter until watching the speech. I never expected him to change to Obama, but he says now he thinks Obama will be a remarkable president.

"Finally Saw The Full Speech. I Am Flat Broke But I'm Donating to Obama Right Now!!!
As someone who is an enormous fan of Cornel West, Toni Morrison, James Baldwin and Ralph Ellison, this has to be some of the most eloquent and insightful words ever committed to the subject of race in America.

The fact that someone was willing to gamble his Presidential quest in taking the issue to the next level, the speech not only spoke extremely well of Barack Obama, but also his belief in America and the American people."

16. On this theme, it's interesting watching Howard Fineman on "Countdown."
Apparently all the Cosmo-sipping members of the Georgetown Cocktail Party crowd think there are too many "knuckleheads" (his word, he said his colleagues used it today, too) out there in America to "get it."

Isn't it funny when these jackasses in the media actually think they're the ones who are highbrow, that we bitter rubes, we unwashed masses, are not deserving of Obama's oratory, and couldn't possibly understand?

It's fucking maddening sometimes listening to these people.

22. These are the people who got us into this eight-year mess to begin with.
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 07:41 PM by VolcanoJen
And they're the know-it-alls? The ones who laughed at Gore? The ones who fought each other over the best "imbed" wartime spots? Their breathless wailing over WMDs and "national unity" and Dixie Chicks? The people who thought Bush looked like a hero during that "Mission Accomplished" stunt? The same people who were stunned when Bush's approval ratings plummeted and the rest of the country started calling him "worst president ever" and then fired the Republican Congress? The ones who didn't even dream of questioning Bush until 1,200 of our fellow citizens were wiped out in a hurricane? The same people who laughed, stood and applauded Bush last week at the Gridiron Dinner while he made a soft-shoe out of our national shame?

These are the same folks who really have no idea what to do with Obama, because he breaks all their rules, he smashes the game they've memorized. But we're the ones who are the knuckleheads.

Uh-huh, Howard Fineman. Sure.

24. To be fair, Fineman was in Philadelphia today
so he wasn't discussing this with the "Georgetown Cocktail Party crowd."

Still, the people he talked to seemed like members of the Main Line Cocktail Party crowd.

23. Neighbor in NC...
She and her husband were unregistered voters when I met them. They're now registered Democrats thanks to me. But that's how apolitical they are. I'm a NC transplant, she grew up in the tiny "town" (not even) we live in. She happened to be home today (not at one of her 2 jobs) and called me right after the speech -- she wasn't sure who to vote for (despite her 18-year-old son working on her to vote for Obama). She was awestruck by the speech and asked me questions about Obama. She now intends to vote for him. :-)
