5. Mr. Obama’s Profile in Courage
There are moments — increasingly rare in risk-abhorrent modern campaigns — when politicians are called upon to bare their fundamental beliefs. In the best of these moments, the speaker does not just salve the current political wound, but also illuminates larger, troubling issues that the nation is wrestling with.

Inaugural addresses by Abraham Lincoln and Franklin D. Roosevelt come to mind, as does John F. Kennedy’s 1960 speech on religion, with its enduring vision of the separation between church and state. Senator Barack Obama, who has not faced such tests of character this year, faced one on Tuesday. It is hard to imagine how he could have handled it better.

Mr. Obama had to address race and religion, the two most toxic subjects in politics. He was as powerful and frank as Mitt Romney was weak and calculating earlier this year in his attempt to persuade the religious right that his Mormonism is Christian enough for them.

6. Hillary Recalls Africa Trip With Amb. Wilson That Didn't Happen

Hillary Recalls Africa Trip With Amb. Wilson That Didn't Happen

Political Punch ABC Jake Tapper

...Today Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, at an event with former Ambassador Joe Wilson,
said, "I'm delighted to be here with Ambassador Wilson. He and I did travel together
to Africa
and, sort of, paved the way for the president's trip the following year,
which was historic."

..."Actually, Senator Clinton may not recall this, but Joe Wilson did not start
at the NSC until some months after her trip to Africa in 1997,"
Rice says in an email.
"I was the senior NSC staffer who accompanied her on that trip."

Not a big deal. Except for two reasons.

1) Rice is a senior adviser to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, and has been
harshly critical of the way Clinton has described her foreign policy bona fides,
saying the former First Lady has exaggerated them considerably. (Neutral arbiters,
such as Factcheck.org, agree.)

2) In hyping her foreign policy experience, Clinton's memories have run against
those of other participants.

"All of us who know the country needs to change, and she is the person most likely to win

Clinton dubbed himself as the "rural hitman" of his wife's campaign, and said he enjoys taking his wife's campaign

not to help Hillary, but to damage the democrats.

The number of GOP cross overs for Hillary are estimated at 119,000, without
those votes, it is likely she would trail Obama by that number.

Obama camp: HRC is taking the low road

By ROGER SIMON | 3/17/08
Is it possible to win the Democratic nomination in such a way as to make winning not worth it?

...“They would do anything to win, and that means anything,” David Axelrod, Obama’s chief strategist, told me Monday.
“There is a frenetic energy around them to commandeer this election in any way they can.”

Axelrod went on: “She is the ultimate Washington inside player. She is always asking, ‘How do we wire the vote?
How do we wire the system to get the results we want?’”

From his point of view, the Clinton campaign keeps trying to change the rules.

“When they started off, it was all about delegates,” Axelrod said. “Now that we have more delegates,
it’s all about the popular vote. And if that does not work out, they will probably challenge us to a game of cribbage to choose the nominee.”

...From the perspective of the Clinton campaign, it has little choice but to go all-out. As a top Clinton aide admitted to me:
“Under our projections, if you sat both the Michigan and Florida delegations as they now exist and based on our
projections for the remaining contests, Sen. Clinton would still trail narrowly on pledged delegates going into the convention.”

10. Clinton Foundation Received $500,000 From Wal-Mart

Clinton Foundation Received $500,000 From Wal-Mart

Sam Stein Huffington Post

Lost amid the blistering pace of campaign news was the announcement, made this past Saturday, that Wal-Mart, the world's largest retailer had donated a half-million dollars to former President Clinton's global foundation.

The donation was made to the Clinton Global Initiative University for educational purposes, including funding college students and encouraging universities to engage on issues such as energy and climate change, global health, and poverty alleviation. And they reflect what some observers say is a growing effort by the retail giant to soften its image within progressive circles.

But Wal-Mart, to a large extent, still remains a pariah among Democrats for its poor labor and environmental practices. And a donation of $500,000 to an individual so closely associated with a leading White House candidate, is more than enough to raise the eyebrows of watchdog organizations.

"We are concerned with all contributions that are this large," said Mary Boyle, the VP of Communications at the non-profit, Common Cause. "They are typically used to buy access and influence. Now I think the question here is what is Wal-Mart trying to gain here? Are they trying to gain access and influence to Sen. Clinton, or do they have another agenda, which could be trying to establish a track record of doing better in the causes of global warming and human rights and poverty. So, I don't know what they are trying to do, but certainly any contribution that large should pique interest."

12. Wright's Rantings Won't Sink Obama
March 19, 2008

Wright's Rantings Won't Sink Obama

By Dick Morris

Will the Gospel According to Jeremiah Wright sink the Obama candidacy? Not very likely.

Let's start with two basic facts:

a. Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) has already won the Democratic nomination. It's over. Regardless of how the remaining primaries and caucuses go, including Michigan and even Florida, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) can never catch Obama in elected delegates. His current lead of 170 pledged delegates will not be overcome no matter what happens. Even if Clinton beats him by 10 points in each of these primaries, he will still lead among elected delegates by over 100. The superdelegates will not override the will of the voters unless Obama is in jail. They will not let themselves in for a civil war by overruling a black man who is beloved by the young by going over the heads of the electorate and naming the candidate that lost the primaries as the nominee. Regardless of how damaged Obama may be by the Wright tapes, it will not provide sufficient cover or cause for them to do so.

b. Wright's rantings are not reflective of Obama's views on anything. Why did he stay in the church? Because he's a black Chicago politician who comes from a mixed marriage and went to Columbia and Harvard. Suspected of not being black enough or sufficiently tied to the minority community, he needed the networking opportunities Wright afforded him in his church to get elected. If he had not risen to the top of Chicago black politics, we would never have heard of him. But obviously, he can't say that. So what should he say?

He needs to get out of this mess with subtlety, the kind Bill Clinton should have used to escape the Monica Lewinsky scandal -- but didn't. As the controversy continues, Americans will gradually realize that Obama stuck by Wright as part of a need to get ahead. They will chalk up to pragmatism why he was so close to such a preacher. As they come to realize that Obama doesn't agree with Wright but used him to get started, they will be more forgiving.

20. Deepak Chopra: Idealism....FDR succeeded; JFK succeeded.

Why Wright Versus Wrong Matters

Deepak Chopra

The Question: How should Barack Obama have responded to inflammatory remarks made by his former pastor, Dr. Jeremiah Wright? Are you responsible for what your spiritual leader says from the pulpit?

In the aftermath of Obama's major speech on race, one expects the affair of Rev. Wright to fade away. But one major theme of the speech was that moving beyond the racial divide can't be accomplished in a single election. It was a stretch to hold Obama culpable for a preacher's tiresome anti-white rants. Under normal circumstances nobody would call him on it, any more than Nixon would have been held responsible for Billy Graham's social views. But strategists in the Clinton camp and troublemakers on talk radio never thought of this as a moral issue. Rather, it was a political trap. They were playing on widespread doubt that Obama's integrity and idealism are too good to be true. Not so much for him as for us. He challenges us to follow our better angels, and we wind up worrying about our hidden demons.

In Philadelphia Obama invoked the framers of the Constitution and Abraham Lincoln, but I don't think one side of human nature can be confronted without the other. The Rev. Wright has entangled Obama in a web of issues that race brings up. A desire to rise above the racial divide is present in any good-hearted citizen, yet we cannot overlook distressing realities. The inner city is rife with drugs, crime, illiteracy, poverty, and the simmering recrimination so well represented by Jeremiah Wright. Black pulpits around the country perform one function -- keeping alive black hopes for a better future -- while at the same time condemning white society for destroying those hopes. It's a dynamic that has been in place for decades, and no doubt Obama has sat in the pew listening to sermons that would bring discomfort and anger to the most liberal white person.

Obama's idealism will play out in one of two ways. Either it will crumple under the assault of politics as usual. Or, and this seems quite extraordinary, it will succeed. FDR succeeded; JFK succeeded. But it's been a generation since idealism won a great victory, during which time we have suffered through a right-wing revolution. Fortunately, reactionaries have worn out their welcome, but there's enough residual fear among progressives that something as incidental as a black preacher's animus looms dangerous.

What should Obama do now? One speech won't put out the right-wing brush fire, and as the attacks become sneakier and dirtier, he will be getting advice from all quarters. I think he only has to be himself. What made the Philadelphia speech so moving is that it wasn't political in tone but moral and reflective. Obama's integrity is genuine on the face of it. As long as that remains true, people will have no trouble telling Wright and wrong. As for fighting back, Obama has stood up for himself quite well and honestly. There's no reason to think that will change in the future.

Elton John: Religion creates ‘hateful lemmings’

Nov. 12, 2006
Organized religion fuels anti-gay discrimination and other forms of bias, pop star Elton John said in
an interview published Saturday. “I think religion has always tried to turn hatred toward gay people,”
John said in the Observer newspaper’s Music Monthly Magazine.
“Religion promotes the hatred and spite against gays.”

“But there are so many people I know who are gay and love their religion,” he said.
“From my point of view, I would ban religion completely. Organized religion doesn’t seem to work.
It turns people into really hateful lemmings and it’s not really compassionate.”

23. Obama's New Pennsylvania Radio Ads: Register As A Dem

Obama's New Pennsylvania Radio Ads: Register As A Dem

By Eric Kleefeld - March 18, 2008

Barack Obama has two new radio ads in Pennsylvania, focused on getting potential supporters registered to vote in time to support him in the state's closed primary.

One ad promotes Obama's agenda for students and younger people, with the announcer explaining the legalities of voter registration: "So even if you're a student, you can register to vote — but you've gotta register as a Democrat by March 24."

The other contains similar instructions, but is more of a pitch to older voters who might be Republicans and independents. It uses a key piece of audio from an Obama speech:
"America is listening — not just Democrats, but Republicans and independents who've lost trust in their government but want to believe again."

24. George Soros declined aid for Michigan Do-Over, opposes slowing nomination
"George Soros does not support holding another primary in Michigan because he believes doing so will further delay the selection of a Democratic candidate in November," Vachon said.

Top Hillary Supporter Ed Rendell Hit Up George Soros For Money To Fund New Michigan Primary

Greg Sargent - March 18, 2008

Top Hillary supporter and Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell privately appealed to billionaire George Soros for cash to help fund a new primary in Michigan -- a request that Soros is declining,a source familiar with their conversation tells Election Central.

...The private appeal by one of Hillary's most important national supporters to one of the wealthiest men in the country is yet another indication of just how hard the Hillary camp is working behind the scenes to get a Michigan revote -- and how many backstage angles they're working to make it happen.

...Contacted for comment, Soros spokesperson Michael Vachon confirmed that the conversation had taken place and that the governor had indeed called Soros to request his financial support for a Michigan revote. But Vachon said Soros was declining the request.

"George Soros does not support holding another primary in Michigan because he believes doing so will further delay the selection of a Democratic candidate in November," Vachon said.

25. Whats Really Bothering HRC About Michigan (Besides 46% do not want her)
Edited on Wed Mar-19-08 12:53 AM by WillYourVoteBCounted

Its the Superdelegates

An excellent comment seen at Talking Points Memo, that should be an OP

As a Michigan voter, I would like to note the following:

1) I was very excited at the of the Primary to be able to vote from a wide field of candidates.

2) Many people I spoke to were happy about the open primary, as a number of Republicans and 3rd Partiers were excited about Mr. Obama.

3) When it was decided that everyone was to withdraw their name, and only Ms. Clinton and Mr. Kucinich did not, there was quite a bit of anger and hostility.

4) Based on that hostility, the campaign to vote "None of these Candidates" to express the mood of NONE of the Republicans or HRC, or DK was promoted in the local media.

5) Many of us tho, given a snowstorm on that day, just decided "why bother?" (I concede, I did not vote as my para-transit bus was not transporting people that day, due to the snow. Since my husband doesn't drive, and had received permission to ride with me, he also did not vote.)

6) In a state with a low turn-out, and only 2 names on the ballot, HRC was only able to snag 55% of the vote, with DK grabbing 1%, and None of these Candidates grabbing 45%.

7) A revote, which is expensive, in a state that has already been in a recession for 5 years, would cost more than we can afford ... in money, or in obligations that would be owed to the winning candidate.

8) If the revote happens, it is supposed to be ONLY registered Democrats, which will skew the earlier numbers.

9) Michigan is not being disenfranchised. We made our choice: 46% of our voters do NOT want HRC (None + DK's 1%).

10) The issue that is upsetting HRC over this is NOT the "disenfranchisement of voters", but the SUPERdelegate count, since the Supers cannot vote if the state delegates are not approved. Most of the SDs of MI and FL have silently chosen HRC.

11) Michigan does understand rules and the idea of fair play. Our party, despite editorials and party member protests, opted to move the date (yet another thing for which our governor will one day have to atone).

12) Michigan rank-and-file voters--the every day John and Jane Doe who are wondering how to keep themselves/their families fed, housed, and warm realize that, once again this was the decision of political insiders.

13) But those same rank-and-file voters understand the concepts of honesty and truthfulness. We have been lied to, consistently, and become more and more economically ruined since GWH Bush. (Actually, Reagan wasn't a picnic...) In the '80s, bumper stickers that said "Will the last one out of Michigan, please turn out the lights?" proliferated. Most of the rank-and-file voters did not have the money to leave, so the light stayed on, going from a 150-watt bulb to 25-watt.

14) We in Michigan want a change in lighting. To our understanding, Mr. Obama wanted the proposed plan to look over, and judge its fairness to the people of Michigan--not just scrawling a signature to get what one wants--as his opponent has done. Since he has taken longer than she believes is necessary to look over the document, she has accused him of dragging his heels.

15) I am still looking for a copy of the proposed plan to look at. The best I have found is a roughed out idea of only registered Democrats being able to vote, in a primary paid for by one of HRC's supporters. This, quite frankly, scares me.

16) Should we get a revote? Honestly, I don't believe so. Our elected leaders made a decision (one that they will eventually see come home to roost) that they thought was in Michigan's best interest, since HRC was predicting that the campaign would be over well before the time Michigan would have a chance for input. We gambled, and we lost. We understand loss--we have the Lions, the closed factories of the Big 3, and Canada's garbage barges.

It is time for politics as usual to come to an end. If the other 48 states can pull out a victory for Mr. Obama, Michigan will vote for him. If, on the other hand, the states pull out a victory for Ms. Clinton, Michigan will vote, but possibly not with as high of a turn out. Because that vote would be a vote for politics as usual. And that is a bill we can no longer afford to pay.

North Carolina: Democratic leadership lining up behind Obama

March 18, 2008
The campaigns are coming to North Carolina soon and I'm hoping to give TPM readers some flavor of what's happening down here prior to our May 6th primary. We also have a hotly contested race for the Democratic nomination for Governor, pitting two very moderate Democrats against each other: the Lt. Governor Bev Perdue (who leads in polling) and the State Treasurer Richard Moore.

While these two are not superdelegates, here is a strong sign of the belief that Obama will win North Carolina on May 6th:

Are these people just totally insane? First, the idea of a strike happening in a voluntary non-paid situation, on a board in which they are arguable guests being permitted an opportunity to talk without paying a fee.

That alone shows they do not understand their situation, nor the purpose of a strike. One who claims to be a Democrat ought to take the labor movement with a enough seriousness to understand work stoppage and collective bargaining.

That they carried tales of the situation to an channel that works against Democrats in general, and in particular to a program hosted by one who is not friends to Democrats or bloggers is amazing.

Hillary it seems should worry about friends like this as much as the opposition.

I ran out of edit time and I can't post a new thread until tomorrow. Even the NY Post loved the speech.

I've not read one negative review yet.

51. Clinton Documents debunk "experience" claims

NYT: Clinton Documents debunk "experience" claims

by goodlittlesquid Wed Mar 19, 2008 at 01:25:35 PM PDT

John Broder of The New York Times has just published an article on their website which addresses the newly, finally revealed HRC White House years itinerary.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/03/19/us/politics/19cnd-archives.html?_r=1&hp&oref=slogin

The article points out that while the documents show she had a role in the administration, that they ultimately fail to live up to the hype Penn and Ickes have been pedling.

UPDATE: Wow.. thanks for all the recs. I am hoping some Obama insider will look at this great NYT article and get to work incorporating it into his upcoming debate strategies ASAP... Wouldn't hurt to throw it in the stump speech either... it is time for Obama to go after his opponent's strengths McCain on national security and Clinton on "experience"...

53. Obama stands up to McCain — and Clinton — on national security

Obama stands up to McCain — and Clinton — on national security

March 19, 2008 ·

Josh Marshall wrote the following at Talking Points Memo today, arguing that the Democratic candidates should be doing more to question McCain’s strength on national security: “Hillary Clinton has stipulated to McCain’s qualifications as Commander-in-Chief; and Obama, implicitly, does the same.”

I’m not sure I agree that Obama has “implicitly” done the same in the past, but after the speech he gave today in Fayetteville, NC (full text here), I think Marshall should revise that assessment. Obama — and his speechwriter — make exactly the argument I think needs to be made, and compellingly. When I read a speech like this, it gives me optimism that for the first time in over a decade, we have a Democratic candidate for President with the political skills — and the political courage — to make mincemeat of a fearmongering Republican opponent. Am I being overly optimistic? I encourage people to read the entire speech, but here are two excerpts:

(((( The RBC Update: "It is time, once again, for America to lead. " ))))

2008.03.19 12:43:33

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obama today:

"The central front in the war against terror is not Iraq, and
it never was. What more could America’s enemies ask for than an
endless war where they recruit new followers and try out new
tactics on a battlefield so far from their base of operations?
That is why my presidency will shift our focus. Rather than
fight a war that does not need to be fought, we need to start
fighting the battles that need to be won on the central front
of the war against al Qaeda in Afghanistan and Pakistan."
