I've NEVER been so personally touched by a politician
Edited on Tue Mar-18-08 11:44 PM by againes654
Barack Obama, say what you will, touched this nation in a way that few can.

Part of his speech touched me in a personal way.

I can no more disown him than I can disown the black community. I can no more disown him than I can my white grandmother - a woman who helped raise me, a woman who sacrificed again and again for me, a woman who loves me as much as she loves anything in this world, but a woman who once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.

This statement reminds me of a conversation that I had with my very bigoted grandfather. My Poppi passed away last year, and was 92 when he passed. The majority of his life was lived on the white side of segregation, and he always had a hard time adjusting to desegregation. I still loved him.

I loved him, when I married a hispanic man right out of high school, and had a baby. When he told me that my child would not be welcome in his house because he had "his blood in her body" I cried. Despite his feelings, and statements, when my daughter was born, his first great grandchild, he loved her. He would have spent any amount of money to help her. He even went so far as to buy my hispanic husband, my daughter, and myself a house to live in when we had none. He did this so my daughter would never want. He learned to love her, and I loved him for it.

When that same husband got another woman pregnant, and left me with nothing, my Poppi did not say, I told you so. He sent me money every month, so I could pay for child care. My daughter never wanted for anything. I loved him.

When I met the most amazing man I have ever known, and brought him to meet my grandparents, my Poppi was accommodating but, not very nice, to my new black boyfriend. It stung for me, and I can't imagine how my husband felt at the time.

That was the only time my grandparents met my husband. My grandmother passed away shortly after that. A few years later, I married this man. My grandfather was not in attendance. I didn't invite him; I knew he wouldn't come, and I didn't want to hear him say that. Shortly after we married, my Poppi moved to Az. to live in an assisted living appt.

I went to visit him several times, with my daughter, but my husband never came. Mostly because my Poppi always paid for the airfare for us to come, and I never asked for 3 tickets, and he never offered.

One day, I asked if my husband could come with us to visit if we paid for his ticket. He said, "What will my neighbors think". I cried so hard. That stung to my core. I went on that trip alone. It was a tough trip, and I was ready to go home by the end. I still loved my Poppi though.

He never got past his past, to be happy for my future. It hurt, but I did still love him. I tried to understand the time that he grew up in. I never justified it, and I still struggle with it.

Obama's speech tonight touched me, and I cried again. I understand why he couldn't disown his grandmother, and I understand why he can't disown Rev. Wright.

5. Your story made me cry, too....
Love is unconditional and you certainly had it....I'm sure you felt your Poppi's hand on your shoulder today, though. Did you feel that brush of wind go by as you wiped your eyes????? He still loves you and he knows now.......sometimes peer pressure doesn't make us think rationally and the fact that he was worried about what his friends would think didn't mean that he hadn't accepted. I'm sure he did.....

19. Thanks for sharing this! I suspect that, across the country, there will be hundreds of
thousands of people sharing stories from their past - just like you have done with yours - because Obama's remarks will have resonated with them, too. I bet many, if not most of us have an anecdote or two like this in our backgrounds. Another tie that binds us together and breaks down boundaries. A shared reality. Which we don't have nearly enough of, anymore. Unites this country over our similarities, NOT our differences. Links us together. Makes us a community. Which can't be a bad thing.

How are you? I've missed seeing you around and was just thinking of you the other day missing seeing you on the DU!

Anyway, wasn't the speech today just amazing??? I was moved to tears and at the end of his speech bowing and saying namaste over and over to the screen thanking him for what he said. I had such an over powering feeling that I had just witnessed one of those moments in time and history of such importance and realization how many must of felt hearing MLK or Bobby Kennedy or others that have spoken such truths at a time when it was needed.

Wow....Anyway, I hope your doing well...things have been crazy lately, haven't they? I've been feeling very restless lately....a lot is coming and we are seeing things unravel around us economically right now.

The Pachafamily is well... thanks for asking....

Meanwhile, I have to confess that I have been reading occassionally the GD-P but not posting much because I am so disgusted by the hit and run assaults and comments that have been happening, especially against anyone who dares to not absolutely love Hillary or who dares to express excitement about Obama. I've been actually disappointed on a lot of levels and shocked by some of the statements by many whom I have seen and known on DU for years. Then again, there are lots of Newbies who have appeared just in the last year who have entered the forums like a cancer that just festers. Emotionally, it takes its toll even to read and witness, so I just log on to DU and take it in small doses so I don't get too affected or get sucked into it all.

Good to see you though...I love the image you have above for Mt. Rushmore....sigh...

74. I can relate
My grandmother, whom I did love dearly, was truly from another era, and never learned that we are all people who need to live and work together. She once said that all Armenians have syphilis. She told me that the Civil Rights act of 1965 was a bad thing because it meant that, had she owned a motel or restaurant, she could not refuse to serve black people. That didn't stop me from loving her. In fact, it made it more important for me to try to understand why people hold views like that, and how to deal with those people in a human way. Thanks for your story.

75. Stop having an orgasm over this Obama guy
He’s not a Messiah, he’s a very average politician – if this is the best Democrats can offer this season, well….. there’ was nothing so incredible about the speech of his, read from teleprompter – bunch of political advisers prepared it, not him. There’s nothing presidential and inspiring about Obama, quite the opposite – he’s plain boring. And his anti-American pastor and spiritual advisor for the last 20 years? Come on people – IS THIS THE BEST THIS COUNTRY HAS TO LEAD US? If Democrats platform this season is all about electing black or a woman, how about convincing Condoleezza Rice to run? G-d, I’d vote for her in a heartbeat….

76. Never seen so many gullible people buying bullshit
from a slippery politician.

DU is starting to look like the Obama revival meeting over at Daily Kos.

I wish his supporters had a little more critical ability to see through the empty "faith," self-serving "hope", unstated "change" and obvious hypocrisy.

As his popularity falls and negatives rise, the superdelegates may still save us from his defeat in the general election.

77. thank you for sharing such a personal and beautiful story with us
it must be hard for some of the older generation, having been raised with such views. Reminds me of a girlfriend, who was raised in MS and I have found her a little bit of a racist. She asked me who I was for at the CO caucus, and when I mentioned Obama, she explained "I will never vote for him." When I replied, Why, because he is black?, she said "no, because he is Muslim." Now, I know that he is not, and I would hope that she knows he is not, but I go back to my original thought that it was because he was black. Sad that these racist comments still persist in this era.

But thank you for such a beautiful story.
