13. I agree, and I've been impressed by how Obama's political acumen.

Obama is a politician. I have no illusions about that. He's not a saint. I am still angry with him for using a homophobe to rally support in South Carolina - I am certain that that was calculated.

However, I feel that Obama is the best of the two candidates we have remaining for the Democratic nomination. And I think he would be a good president. Cautious, middle-of-the-road, not radical at all - but a good president.

18. You need a good politician for the job

Franklin Roosevelt was a political genius. Many of our most outstanding Congressional leaders have been as well. Crafting an admirable platform is one thing, but any president who can't get his policies enacted is a flat failure.

Saints have their role, which is to be wildly visionary and hope the world catches up with them. But to do the necessary thing, to practice what Bismarck called the "art of the possible," it takes a master politician -- one combining equal parts of vision and pragmatism, idealism and cunning.

If Obama proves to be that sort of master politician, the results will be far more satisfactory than if he actually was a saint.

By all accounts, Carter is a wonderful, intelligent, kind person. Lousy president. He couldn't get his initiatives through a Democratic Congress. The minute he hit town he pissed off almost everyone inside the beltway.

These results are based nightly telephone surveys and reported on a four-day rolling average basis. Just one night of polling is included since Obama’s speech and that single night result is not much different from the four-day average. The reason for today’s Obama bounce is that Friday night’s results have rolled out of the four-day sample. Following the initial media frenzy over Pastor Wright, Friday’s results were the single worst night of polling for Obama since the Primary Season began.
