I had no problem with Obama talking about his grandmother's racism because I thought she was dead. I even praised his speech. Now I feel sick. He really shouldn't have done that. He could have just said there were people in his own family, not go into specifics.

50. He didn't call her a racist.
And he reported her fear of some black men that she encountered on the street in his first book, published in 1995. Doubtless she knows of that and is probably a bit enough person not to be upset by it. Possibly, she's as good a person as her only grandson and has no objection to letting the truth be known.

have you addressed one of the larger issues?

I'm willing to bet that if his grandmother released a heart felt message saying she approved of his use of her for a higher purpose, one that actually embraces her meaning to him, that still wouldn't be enough to you. Then it would be look at how he's manipulating poor ole granny.

don't you have anything better to do? I personally would much rather NOT let racism remain an unspoken accepted norm within my family. whatever, your snippy niggling useless crybaby gasp gasp anything to ~~~~condemn~~~~ your opponent means nothing. enjoy the hypocrisy, and the comfort it affords you in the convenient slide away from actual, substantive progress. you wallow well within it.

is the way we have done so well so far.

You just don't get it do you? The whole point he was making went zipping past the top of your head faster then an F-16.

Why should he disown the Black community when there is as many stupid things said and felt on the other side.

Just like at work hearing people being "funny" saying "Happy James Earl Ray Day". Just sort of laugh in that awkward uncomfortable way and then walk away silent about it. Then I come on here and here Hillary Dems telling me I have to give up on Obama because "Happy James Earl Ray Day" folks won't vote for him.

ding ding ding clue train coming your way.

100. I cringed at a lot of things people in my family said when I was growing up.
But I never used those words to further my agenda. It's a family loyalty thing. Plus, they changed over the years as they got to know people of other races. Using his grandmother that way ruined an otherwise moving speech. We sat there transfixed, until he said the grandmother part. That part made me very emotional - and not in a good way.

That doesn't mean I disown her. That doesn't mean I don't love her. That doesn't mean I am tossing her under a bus.

People close to us don't always agree with us. In fact, they sometimes say outrageously ignorant or stupid remarks. We don't disassociate with them because of those remarks, but we don't agree with those statements either.

14. Yeah she's 84 and it's totally unfair to call her a racist.
My mum is one of the sweetest women in the world.

When I was a kid she's make remarks about uppity ______________ (a group of immigrants from a Mediterranean country).

It drove me nuts.

They were generally really hard working people and have for the most part done well for themselves and many were my friends.

My mum was the product of social stereotypes under which she was raised.

I corrected her every time and now she's very open minded.

A racist wouldn't have put that much love into a multi racial child. They would have insisted they be orphaned if not worse.

Consider getting a grip.

21. I was born and raised in his grandfather's hometown - El Dorado, Kansas
Dad was a Republican who finally had enough of Reagan and was prepared to vote against him in 1984, but he died in 1983. Mom was an FDR Democrat. My sister, fellow DUer Bullwinkle925, was married to a Chinese American for 33 years before his death last October. It took a while for my parents to accept Larry because his being Chinese made him "different" and therefore "scary." When they got to know him, they saw what an incredible person he was and grew to love him.

I am the baby of the family. Once Bullwinkle asked my parents what they'd do if I married a black man. They were shocked and thought it would be the most horrible thing. This from my mom, the FDR Democrat. When Bullwinkle asked if they'd like it better if I married a white man who beat me up than a black man who was good to me, they preferred that I marry the white man. Can you believe it? But this is that generation. Dad was born in 1908; Mom in 1925 - she'd be the same age as Obama's grandmother, I believe.

Ironically, I married a Pakistani guy - go figure! My parents died in 1983 and 1987, so they never got to meet my husband, but he definitely has treated me well and has done so much to give me a wonderful life. I just wanted to relate this story because this is where small town Americans of that generation come from.

I wish I could meet Obama so we could compare notes.

22. It's a generational thing!
Look, I love my grandparents. But I've heard each of them say racist comments at different points in my life. These people spent large majorities of their lives in a world where that view and language was not only accepted but in some cases encouraged. I'm not defending these comments at all, and it makes me cringe to hear them say it. But if you spent 60 years of your life in a racist world you'd have a hard time changing at 85 too!

Anti-Semite Andy Martin in NewsMax: "Free Obama's White Grandmother"

In a March 28 column for NewsMax.com titled "Free Obama's White Grandmother," "Internet journalist" Andy Martin wrote that Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL), whom he called "one of the most racist politicians in America today," has "locked the grandmother who actually raised him away in a closet," adding: "he 'segregation' of Madelyn Dunham, Obama's white grandmother, and only real grandmother, has to be one of the cruelest and most mendacious political kidnappings this nation has ever seen." Martin wrote that Dunham "is the 'Prisoner of Obama,' and of Obama's racist myth that he is 'Black' and not 'Black and White.'

32. He seemed to me to make the implication that it was racist for
his grandmother to be uneasy at the approach of a black man on the street. I grew up in rural Kansas during the 50s and 60s and bought into the civil rights movement wholeheartedly. My time in the Army and the ensuing 40 years of experience has tempered those beliefs a bit. So that now,(depending on context and the street) I too will feel increased alertness in the same situation. It's not racism, it's awareness. See

The "I've got lots of black friends" thing is really rather pathetic at this point.

105. No more pathetic than
"I voted for a black president" or "I'm white and I really do feel your pain and empathize with your anger". It's all condescending and back-handed racism.

Guess what? You can vote for Obama and tell black people that you agree with their anger, but you're still white; you're still a racist by virtue of profiting in any way - socially, monetarily, in your education - on the backs of slaves. It won't work. Obama is not going to offer himself up for your sins. You are white; you are racist.

44. Doris Lessing was viciously attacked on DU and she is even older
The 87-year-old Lessing, who grew up in what is now Zimbabwe and whose first book was about race relations in South Africa, said she believes that if Obama is elected President he will be assassinated.

This Nobel Prize winner, who has seen and experienced almost a century of racial conflict throughout the world, and who was banned from returning to South Africa because of her stance against apartheid, was thoroughly denounced on this board as a racist, senile, irrelevant old hag because in her estimation, Senator Obama is at risk of falling victim to the racial hatred that has barely changed in her lifetime.

So, attack an old lady? Lots of DUers have, so don't pretend it's horrifying.

Attack a candidate's grandmother? I don't see the point. And I don't agree with the OP's characterization of her as a "racist granny." That's offensive bullshit.

FWIW, I thought invoking his grandmother was the high point of Obama's speech, the point most likely to resonate with the most listeners.

64. The entire speech went over your head. It's convenient to label someone as "racist"
but it's more complicated than that. He even said that of Ferraro.

We can dismiss Reverend Wright as a crank or a demagogue, just as some have dismissed Geraldine Ferraro, in the aftermath of her recent statements, as harboring some deep-seated racial bias.

But race is an issue that I believe this nation cannot afford to ignore right now. We would be making the same mistake that Reverend Wright made in his offending sermons about America – to simplify and stereotype and amplify the negative to the point that it distorts reality.

The fact is that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we’ve never really worked through – a part of our union that we have yet to perfect. And if we walk away now, if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American.

90. He relayed this story LONG before this prez race/racial issue (in his book)
It was in his autobiography about her being scared of the AA man approaching at a bus stop . Per his book, it was his grandfather who told him about it becuz, Obama couldn't figure out why she wanted to be driven to work by her husband one day instead of taking the bus. IIRC, the conversation was first that she was scared of some panhandler asking her for money around the bus stop and then after his grandmother left the room, the grandfather told him the race of the individual. The next few pages have him trying to come to terms with his grandparents who loved/raised their AA grandson and his grandmother's reaction to the panhandler.
It's probably pretty SAFE to say that she/the grandfather/his family were well aware of this situation being made public before the book was published---he mentioned in the opening of the book that his mother read what he wrote before he published it.

Some posters in this thread are acting like he just pulled this out of thin air and his grandmother had no idea it would be made public.

Why not credit the guy for being honest?? How many of us in this thread would want to write a book/talk about THEIR family dynamics/childhood memories when they were growing up..ALL of them.
Not me.

97. He said something that a lot of white people can relate to..
I'm a middle aged white grandma with bi-racial grandchildren. I admit to some trouble relating to the pastor's comments. That is not the world I grew up in. But as much as I hate to admit it, I can relate to his grandmother. My grandchildren are my world. I don't care what color any of them are, they are mine, and I couldn't love them more. But, there have also been times in my life, when i have been driving through an AA neighborhood in Chicago at night and have been afraid stopped at a traffic light. I was raised with don't go in neighborhoods where you don't belong at night. I guess part of that is still in me. I don't consider myself a racist, but I can relate to her fears. It's not something that is easy to admit, but it is the truth.

101. Right over your head.
Because it is the truth. Can you comprehend this simple concept. The past few days have all been about pointing fingers at Black churches and accusing Obama for not disowning them; yet we all know damn well the dirty little secret in all our families and communities. We all have family members/friends/co-workers who say stupid things that we either pretend to ignore or justify internally.
