The White Preacher Double Standard: How Hagee, Parsley and the Rest Get Away with Everything

Posted by Cenk Uygur, Huffington Post at 12:09 PM on March 19, 2008.

If the disparity in coverage isn't racist, then what is it?

Rudy Giuliani's priest has been accused in grand jury proceedings of molesting several children and covering up the molestation of others. Giuliani would not disavow him on the campaign trail and still works with him.

Mitt Romney was part of a church that did not view black Americans as equals and actively discriminated against them. He stayed with that church all the way into his early thirties, until they were finally forced to change their policies to come into compliance with civil rights legislation. Romney never disavowed his church back then or now. He said he was proud of the faith of his fathers.

Jerry Falwell said America had 9/11 coming because we tolerated gays, feminists and liberals. It was our fault. Our chickens had come home to roost, if you will. John McCain proudly received his support and even spoke at his university's commencement.

Reverend John Hagee has called the Catholic Church the "Great Whore." He has said that the Anti-Christ will rise out of the European Union (of course, the Anti-Christ will also be Jewish). He has said all Muslims are trained to kill and will be part of the devil's army when Armageddon comes (which he hopes is soon). John McCain continues to say he is proud of Reverend Hagee's endorsement.

Reverend Rod Parsley believes America was founded to destroy Islam. Since this is such an outlandish claim, I have to add for the record, that he is not kidding. Reverend Parsley says Islam is an "anti-Christ religion" brought down from a "demon spirit." Of course, we are in a war against all Muslims, including presumably Muslim-Americans. Buts since Parsley believes this is a Christian nation and that it should be run as a theocracy, he is not very concerned what Muslim-Americans think. ...........(more)

1. Thank you for posting this. I seethe with fury thinking about the bloated white
"spiritual leaders" and they hate they can get away with spewing. I feel filthy just thinking about the way they think.

2. Im not so sure if its racism or just the MSM protecting Republicans
I think our MSM is biased against the Democratic party after sucking up to the GOP power for the last 8 years.

I dont think it would have mattered if Obamas reverend was black or white, they would have tried using anything even remotely controversial he said against the front running Democrat.

(Unless it was Clinton. She seems to get a pass on these kinds of "lets destroy the Democrat" issues as if she's a Republican.)

4. If getting away with means
having the entire left side of the aisle creating such a firestorm that they were forced to apologize for their 9/11 remarks, then yeah, they get away with it.

Do we really want to get into a "our religious freaks are better than your religious freaks" argument?

I saw plenty of shit said about the Mormon church when Romney was still in the race and the stuff about Rudy's priest was in the papers (at least here in NY) every day. It's disengenuous to say they get away with anything. Plenty of people bitch about the white guys also.

10. I didn't realize you
were speaking of someone specifically. It'll come out - this week is "bash Obama" week. It may start in the left blogosphere but it'll get out.

I was speaking of the 9/11 remarks Rev Wright versus Revs Falwell/Robertson et al. Those remarks were condemned by just about everyone on both sides. Rightly so.

14. The press has always been in
the tank for McCain. That's been for years. But stories about religious freaks always seem to make it out into the light of day. I'm sure this one will as well.

11. And then there's Pat Robertson.
The entire Christian coalition is ineligible to run for office. If you know anyone who has been to church, they are suspect too.

19. What influence will Wright have on an Obama presidency?
That's the fundamental question, and we all know the answer (HINT: It won't, not in a negative way)

Obama will not push for bills that hurt White America or American in general, etc.

By contrast, McCain's religious nuts want more war in the middle east to hasten the rapture not to mention anti-choice, anti-gay legislation, and McCain WILL push for things related to those items, to get support from the religious right and also because more wars have other benefits related to profit and imperialism.

That is the difference, and it's enormous.
