Despite MSNBC negative Obama spin, Obama leads McCain (48/43) in CBS poll
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:26 AM by godai
All they are emphasizing again and again is the independents vote, favoring McCain. I didn't even see them mention Hillary's smaller lead over McCain, compared to Obama (Obama 48/43, Clinton 46/44) and no discussion of Hillary's and McCain's higher negative ratings, compared to Obama.

I am puzzled as to who decides to spin the data day to day, now spinning highly unfavorable to Obama.
---------------------------------------

If the election were held today and Obama and McCain were the candidates, 48 percent of those surveyed say they would support Obama while 43 percent say they would support McCain. In February, Obama led McCain 50 percent to 38 percent.

If Clinton and McCain were the candidates, the New York senator receives 46 percent support to McCain's 44 percent.

In a turnaround from last month, McCain now leads both Obama and Clinton among independent voters. Obama led McCain by 10 points among this group last month, but he now trails by 8 points. Clinton trails McCain by 11 points among independents.

Obama has the highest favorable rating of the three candidates - 44 percent - followed by Clinton at 39 percent and McCain at 38 percent. Clinton, meanwhile, has the highest unfavorable rating at 41 percent, followed by McCain at 31 percent and Obama at 28 percent.

1. That isn't good. He led 50-38 in the last CBS poll a month ago
Only in Obamanation is losing 7 points in a month good. In contrast Clinton gained 2 on McCain...

3. Only in the Clinton Crusade is winning losing.
You provide a good example of the spin that Obama is fighting. Let's see where it all takes us.

7. He has been losing ground in electability for almost a year. This is a continuation of the trend
Only in Obamanation is the trend not obvious. By the convention he should be losing by a solid margin if this continues--something the sd's will look at...

It will take a week to gauge the effect of endless looping of Rev. Wright's incendiary comments and
Obama's subsequent speech.

9. Obama's been going down for a year and it accelerated after Wisconsin
NAFTAgate, 3 am, Power, etc. Pastorgate is just one part of it and will be more of a general election swiftboat problem than a real primary issue.

8. A month ago, McCain was still getting slammed by Romney
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:34 AM by SoCalDem
and was actively campaigning, so the media was eagerly bashing him... rightwing radio was pillorying him every day..that's not happening now.. he's the invisible man and has no oppostition..

12. So why did Clinton improve 2 against McCain while Obama dropped 7?
That is a difference of 9 between both of our candidates. They are both generally going down against McCain for the reasons you mentioned in most polls--but Obama is falling much faster than Clinton after killing the rethugs a year ago.

17. Because Obama's had a rough week. That's already been established.
Yes, he has lost some ground this week. Nobody denies that. The question is whether he can recover. I think it's likely that he can...it's a long time between now and November.

19. Click the link with the poll averages.. There is a WIDE
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:42 AM by SoCalDem
range, depending on the poll & the sample..

It;s to the advantage of the person reporting the poll, to chose the one that supports THEIR slant.. That's why I always use the AVERAGE of all the polls..

AND

she has gotten mostly neutral or even sympathetic coverage from the press.. (if you comapre honestly)

The racial stuff from her campaign DID happen..but it was not really pinned on her, and did not really affect her numbers all that much..

The converse, though is also true..It DID affect B's numbers, because the press was goaded into turning on him in a big way..to show that they were NOT favoring him.. The minister stuff came out right during this, and compounded the negative coverage..

15. He is going down consistently. The "new" candidate should be up by a lot more
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 08:38 AM by jackson_dem
For instance at this time Gore was losing by 11 to the "new" Bush. In the end he won by 0.4. The "new" candidate always loses ground as he gets defined and Obama is proving it. He is by far the weaker general election candidate. He is losing to McCain in the poll average and the rethugs haven't even touched him yet...

14. Yeah, he's lost ground. That's reflected in every poll this week. He's still leading
And he's leading by more than Clinton is, even after this week. It's very possible that he can bounce back. A few weeks ago, you Clinton people were eager to point out that polls at this stage did not matter.

6. Media is just an elevated version of the "concern troll"..
except that they have hours and hours every day to show their "concern"..and they get to choose who will get to "represent" the people they are so "concerned" about..

it was the Anti-Obama 3 some on the panel. The only one that was almost fair was David Gergen...

4. Interesting.
So, was that the same poll Joe Scarborough was citing this morning, only he cherry-picked the independent numbers and failed to cite that Obama still beats McCain in a head-to-head, and even Clinton does (barely)?

Wow.

And Clinton's unfavorables just don't seem to be moving, either.

Good post, godai.

5. The polls they use are always showing the worst possib;e numbers
They should be using this one.. It averages ALL the recent polls

Today's shows both H & B in a virtual tie with McCain..which is NOT surprising at all, since he has NO ONE beating up on HIM..and they have EVERYONE beating up on them

16. Yeah I saw that, I wanted to freakin slap him silly. He showed the CBS matchup
where Hillary beat McCain and McCain beat Obama among independents, but refused to show that Obama was beating McCain. So frustrating. Ugh.
