Obama's speech makes YouTube history and is the MOST WATCHED video in the world today!!!
OBAMA'S SPEECH MAKES YOUTUBE HISTORY...Barack Obama's "A More Perfect Union" speech is the most popular video in the world today, drawing an unusual 1.2 million full views in its first 24 hours on YouTube – double the views of the next most popular clips. YouTube only counts visitors who watch an entire video, so hundreds of thousands of additional visitors probably watched part of the 37-minute address.

While commentators and Democratic leaders predict that "A More Perfect Union" will ultimately be seen as a historic contribution to American race relations, it is already making history in YouTube politics. At this pace, it will be the most watched contemporary political speech in Internet history. In about a day, it is already the second most viewed item on Obama's innovative YouTube channel, which boasts 810 videos and 13 million channel views. (For comparison, that is nine times the views of Clinton's channel and 21 times the views for the McCain channel.)

Obama's all-time top video, a 4-minute response to President Bush's State of the Union recorded exclusively for YouTube, ultimately drew 1.3 million views. An Obama aide tells The Nation that video took about two weeks to reach one million views -- this longer Philadelphia address broke one million views in a single day, with visitors voting it the top rated and most "favorited" video on YouTube. And over at MSNBC.com, an excerpt of Obama's speech was also the most popular clip, drawing over 360,000 views.

The most popular video on YouTube has no lip-synching Chinese teenagers, no babies falling over, no drunk cats: It's Barack Obama's speech on race.

So far, the Obama speech has been clicked on 1.6 million times —though it's not possible to tell whether viewers watched all 37 minutes.

Not all watchers are Obama supporters, but all who watch will hear Obama! His own eloquent words are the very best we can do to promote the man and the message.

The world is watching! :applause: :kick:

1. Yes....
All who hear the mighty Obama will be swayed by the sheer magic of his oratory...until they see that Jeremiah Wright clip again and ask "What kind of man exposes his two young daughters to hate-speech every Sunday?"

2. The ones who ask that usually
take their kids to a church that preaches hate against homosexuals, feminists, liberals, & anyone who doesn't look or think like they do, but are okay with that because their preacher is white.

100. i think it's the context.
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 07:36 AM by beezlebum
i also think wright's "hate speech" was blown out of proportion- yeah, b/c he's black, and so is obama.

case in point:
when jerry falwell (et al white dudes) said, "america deserved katrina/9/11" he was citing the wrath of god. he was saying that new orleanians deserved hellfire and brimstone by the hand of GOD for tolerating homosexuality and embracing debauchery and hedonism and "sins" of the like. and yet, he was still a "well-respected" preacher among the right wing, and it even fed their rhetoric. evangelicals thrive off of these bigoted "sins" and preaching this type of hatred.

when jeremiah wright said, "america deserved 9/11/god damn america," he was citing the wrath of humanity. he was saying that people wouldn't stand to be raped and murdered and imprisoned and tortured and stolen from, that they would fight back with awful events like 9/11.

he was condemning far greater, more relevant and UNIVERSAL sins- not just biblical sins, but sins that evangelicals either disregard or SUPPORT, like war, oppression, imprisoning and even executing innocent people b/c of their skin color (indoctrinated murder), making unfair laws that put the impoverished at major disadvantages, AIDS (and i remind people again of tuskegee/syphilis), and so on, and the RIGHT portrayed him as "anti-american and racist," and the right of the LEFT WING agreed and/or took advantage of it, and used it to paint obama as "too black" to win the nomination b/c it "won't play with middle america." :eyes:

the same middle america, i might note, who make up the numbers in the congregations of jerry falwell's and pat robertson's subordinates, who the thought of an obama presidency wouldn't have played well with anyway.

most don't want to admit that he's right, and those deciding he's anti-american or racist are either too lazy to investigate the context or don't want to admit that they are personally insulted as white people.

no, i'm not surprised bigots wouldn't vote for him, but that should not change how most of his supporters already felt. (speaking of white middle class conservatives, my husband, a lifelong middle class conservative, is still, even after pastorgate, supporting barack obama).

wright doesn't strike me as some smarmy preacher. he's the kind i can respect, b/c he's talking about real sins here, deserving of condemnation. his speech may be a tad on the inflammatory side, but at the heart of what he's actually saying, i think i could happily bring my white middle class kids to his church any sunday, and i'm not even christian.

there's no there there, man, in terms of "hatred."

(on edit: paragraph breaks and grammar...)

20. Not quite...
Certainly, right-wing churches have mastered the art of hate, but normal people are wondering how Obama could take his daughters to a church that preaches that the U.S. government invented AIDS as a genocidal weapon against blacks, and that's a relatively mild claim compared to the other sermons.

99. Every Sunday...?
Let's see some evidence of that.

Several people have come out and stated that this was not a typical Wright sermon. Obama has said that he was not present when such things were said.

But hey, if your game is spin, exaggeration and using his own children to make a twisted political point, then have at it. As for me, I prefer an intelligent and mature dialog to drive-by politics. And I am beginning to believe that Obama can change the tone of such debates as well as being a great president.

The days of smear and fear can be gone - if you want it.

113. If you watch the video...
and canvas the crowd you will see that not a lot of children are in the audience.

Perhaps this church is progressive enough to know that children should have a separate service where they're more engaged.

Plus when does preaching history from the pulpit constitute hate-speech?

but you've become as narrow minded & hateful as your compadres. If you can't see the significant difference between a Britney video, and Obama's speech, then I'd say you've lost all sense of objectivity.

When is the last time you heard of that number of hits for a "POLITICAL" video? You're posting nonsense these days, and it's really beneath you. This video is being shared far & wide and is having a definite impact, contrary to what the naysayers had hoped.

if you're an Obama supporter or a Hillary supporter. People are interested in politics and paying attention. The most viewed video is not a Britney Spears video and that's a very, very good thing for our democracy.

"It is a good place to begin" coming together to rise above the distraction de jour. Thank you Senator Obama. Well done.

87. That is pretty sweet
It feels good to be alive right now. I'm very happy to be a part of history. I have had a strong feeling that this speech would come, just not over the controversy that forced it to. Well, not all things are planned out but fate and destiny proved that this is an issue that we can now discuss in a more evolved way when it comes to the semantics regarding race and racism.
Things like the Wright controversy happen for a reason....

89. check out the New York Times' list of most e-mailed articles
Not only is the transcript of Obama's speech already the most e-mailed article of the last 30 days, but the three most e-mailed articles of the past 24 hours are:

1) Roger Cohen's op-ed piece on Obama's speech
2) the transcript of Obama's speech
3) Nicholas Kristof's op-ed piece on Obama's speech

Cohen:

Honesty feels heady right now. For seven years, we have lived with the arid, us-against-them formulas of Bush’s menial mind, with the result that the nuanced exploration of America’s hardest subject is almost giddying. Can it be that a human being, like Wright, or like Obama’s grandmother, is actually inhabited by ambiguities? Can an inquiring mind actually explore the half-shades of truth?

Yes. It. Can.

Krisof:

Barack Obama this week gave the best political speech since John Kennedy talked about his Catholicism in Houston in 1960, and it derived power from something most unusual in modern politics: an acknowledgment of complexity, nuance and legitimate grievances on many sides. It was not a sound bite, but a symphony.

This is one of the comments on YouTube:

Barack Obama: By age 46, first black Harvard Law Review Editor (in its 104-year history), Harvard Law J.D. I watched it. Then I watched it with Sweetie. The next day I watched it with 3 or 4 people at work. So really, those 3 views were seen by like 5 people. I wouldn't be surprised if that were common.

Yesterday Sweetie was at work, and several young people there were talking about the Obama speech and the Onion's take on it. I walked into a store last night and two young guys were talking about the speech.

It's in the air...

This gives me hope that Hillary and her right wing allies dirty smear campaign will fail.

The truth is in Obama's historic speech. That beautiful speech is one for the history books.

Hillary and the right wing will also go down in history as the villains attempting to destroy this good man who responded with the beauty and power of his own hand written speech.

We have a Lincoln in this race, running against Boss Hogg!

I hope and pray that America will choose the right person for the enormous job that lies ahead.

120. Todays Time says this about it....not looking good
Other analysts, Democrat and Republican, took a different view of Obama’s refusal to turn his back on Wright – whom he portrayed as part of an embittered legacy of discrimination.

Some saw it as a potential gift both to Clinton, who has been surging in opinion polls since videos of Wright were posted on the internet, and to McCain, whose aides have begun to wonder whether Obama might prove an easier target than Clinton in November.

“Nothing could be more dangerous to Mr Obama’s aspirations than the revelation that he, the son of a white woman, sat Sunday after Sunday – for 20 years – in an Afrocentric, black nationalist church in which his own mother, not to mention other whites, could never feel comfortable,” said Shelby Steele, a Stanford University historian and author of a book on Obama.

Rush Limbaugh, the right-wing radio talk-show foghorn, expressed the popular view more succinctly: “No country wants a president who is a member of a church with this kind of radicalism as its mainstream.”

The latest polls confirm that, for all the acclaim heaped on Obama’s speech by political insiders, voters seemed to be taking a sharp step back from the charismatic candidate who built his campaign on the promise of a break from “old politics”. One of Obama’s best-known slogans – and the title of his bestselling book – is “the audacity of hope”, a phrase that originally came from one of Wright’s sermons.

In Pennsylvania, the next big state to hold a primary, on April 22, Clinton has doubled her lead in the past two weeks and is now 26 points ahead. In North Carolina, which votes on May 6, Obama has been leading comfortably all year but is now only one point ahead. A national Gallup poll on Friday put Clinton ahead of Obama by two points for the first time since January.

Unfortunately for Democrats, their nomination battle seems to be helping McCain. The Republican rose to a eight-point lead over Obama and a 10-point lead over Clinton in Rasmussen tracking polls released on Friday.

Obama retains an almost insurmountable lead in the crucial count of convention delegates who will pick the Democratic nominee, and on Friday he picked up a useful endorsement from one of those delegates – Governor Bill Richardson of New Mexico, one of America’s leading Hispanic politicians. Richardson had been close to the Clintons and was regarded as a possible vice-presidential choice for Hillary. His first task will be to rally Hispanic voters in the hope of averting late primary losses that would damage Obama’s chances of picking up uncommitted party officials – the so-called superdelegates likely to decide the contest.

Other Democrats are worried that Obama may have given his Republican rivals the ammunition needed to undermine his campaign. McCain insists he will not engage in dirty tricks, and his aides distributed a memo last week warning Republicans to stay away from “overheated rhetoric and personal attacks”.

Yet Republican surrogates are drooling at the prospect of linking Obama to Wright’s rants.

They intend to ask why he has stopped wearing an American flag badge on his lapel, and why his wife, Michelle, said at a rally: “For the first time in my adult life, I am proud of my country.”

The Clinton camp is treading carefully, aware that overt attacks on Obama might alienate black voters. Yet the New York senator’s aides are quietly pleased by what they regard as an overdue scrutiny of Obama’s past. They believe he will come to be seen not as some Messiah but as an unusually gifted political hack who has made compromises with dodgy associates, just like most other American politicians.

That intensifying scrutiny may soon lead to Jones’s Illinois door, and to further uncomfortable insights into the unflattering political realities that accompanied Obama’s climb from obscurity.
