I hope many of you will be able to commit to doing the same thing. We will be donating half of our rebate to the Obama campaign and the other half to Veterans for Peace. :D

2. I think the amount will be $1200.
I think for those who filed jointly, they get a $1200 rebate. Filing single is $600.

that money was given to stimulate the economy and prevent unemployment and recession, not to fatten the coffers of Barack Obama.

7. That money is MINE to do with what I want.
And I want to beat the fucking republican and corporatist machine in washington.

So, thanks, I'll spend it any fucking way I want.

If that's ok with you.

Or even if it it isn't.

11. The Latte Elite...
It must be really nice to be able to treat $1,200 as disposable income that can be given to a candidate who doesn't need it. I was just making the point that it would be better to support your local merchants and put that money into the community.

16. I assure you, we're not latte elite
But thanks for the stereotyping anyway. This is actually considered a long-term strategic investment...for the entire country.

We are also very supportive of local merchants who sell locally made goods. We buy produce from local farmers, support local mom & pop grocery stores (a rarity but I live in rural Virginia) support local furniture makers, I could go on. I'm one of those who refuses to buy from Walmart (Hillary's friends) who do nothing but buy from China & other countries that promote slave labor.

And finally, this stimulus check is a loan against NEXT years tax return. We'll spend our money any damned way we please.

12. Stimulate the economy, eh?
Other than the futility of $1200 stimulating an economy that's gone so far south it would take superhuman effort to pull it back up, we'll all have to pay this back at 2008's tax time. It's not so much a rebate as an advance on 2008's tax refund, if any. Otherwise it will be listed as income. Donating it to Obama isn't such a bad idea. Perhaps next year under President Obama the economy will improve. This administration, in the meantime, is giving no one a free lunch.

18. I think it's a great idea
It's a way of telling Republicans & corporate America to stuff their bribes. This isn't money that's falling out of the sky to help our economy. It's a LOAN from next year's tax returns. And it's a bribe to appease the appalling situation they've gotten us in.

13. With my rebate
I plan on buy American-made good or local services. I'll probably go out to eat a few extra times, leaving a nice tip, buy a couple of books by American writers, and get a few American-made clothes that I can find. I'll probably just donate my $25/month like I have been doing and keep it at that. The goal is to end this recession we are in and keep it as a normal fluctuation rather than something big. Can you guarantee that Obama will spend your money on things that will boost the economy? If you think his presidency will be better than 9 more months with an economic recession, then by all means do it.

14. I wish we could
If our family wasn't in such desperate need of our check for past due bills, I know we would too. It is a great and generous idea for people who can do it. I made a small donation to the Obama campaign before and hope to do so again when I can.

I can understand families being unable to do this. We're older, our children are independent of us, and we have no pressing needs or expenses. I hope the rebate helps you and your family out of this very difficult time.

31. I'm paying medical bills.
How either Hillary or Obama can not support single-payer health insurance and still call themselves progressive is beyond me.

If either of these campaigns need more money, they can take it from their own rich coffers, be they black or white. Both of them seem pretty handy around a real estate sale and I understand they both own million dollar homes. Sell a wing or something. I need my money to survive.

32. my tinfoil hat says
Edited on Thu Mar-20-08 12:45 PM by hfojvt
:tinfoilhat: That was part of the reason for the stimulus package to begin with. People above the median income get more checks and get bigger checks than people below. Thus, more of the 'stimulus' money is going to Republicans and McCain will make a play for it.

Well, I suppose, in a roundabout way, that's public financing of the election.

edit: the evidence of the above

http://www.taxpolicycenter.org/numbers/displayatab.cfm?Docid=1780&DocTypeID=2

Of the total rebate money, only 29.7% of it goes to the poorest 40% of Americans while 47.1% goes to the richest 40% of Americans. 93.7% of households in the 80-90% group will get a rebate check compared to only 74.2% in the bottom 20%.

41. Some of mine is going to Obama's campaign
I've already made one contribution and now that I know how much I'm getting, I will contribute more. I think some will go to CodePink, too
Some has gone to local charities that help the hungry and also the helpless, homeless animals. More of those will be made, too
I can take a tax deduction for the charitable contributions (inc. CodePink), too

Better than buying more stuff made in China
