I believe the attacks on Obama's pastor were in fact a wonderful opportunity of which he took advantage of to actually begin a process of uniting the divisions within this country, if you will perhaps the beginning of the end of John Edward's "Two Americas," where this is taken to mean the various dichotomies that separate: class, race and ethnicity, religion, education, etc.
A possible next step, a grassroots movement to work together and begin to discuss how Americans can move beyond these divisions. Does anyone know of any new attempts in that direction?
Finally, this is a wonderful opportunity for Hillary Clinton. At the political level, a powerful response would be for Hillary and Bill Clinton to actively defend and praise Obama. Perhaps afterwards co-host a town hall meeting on the topic with Obama and other parties (perhaps even Rev. Wright). Why? First, it it the right thing to do, given their clear interest in civil rights and to show that some things transcend political battles. Second, it is very smart politics as it will show she is a statesman ready on day one to help run and heal America. Third, it will also hep heal the party and rekindle enthusiasm of some African American voters for Hillary's candidacy should she be the nominee
