She will be briefed by the State Department later today.

And NO there is no link because it was just on CNN about 1 minute ago.

wonder if they'll say one word about HRC.
It's really weird to see the NYT morph into a propaganda mill.
Their reporting has gotten totally unreliable.

seems to be crawling with people with different interests. I've learned quite a bit from working on getting exposure for Sibel Edmonds. It's time for someone in Congress to look deeply into this department in the interests of the American people.

132. two possible contractors: Stanley and Citigroup
Posted at CLG:

State Department refuses to release the name of passport contractor --Why? Just like Bush's other protected species, the telecoms, the State Department's passport contractor(s) are protected at all costs. Any and all of their illegal activities are shielded by Bush-run agencies and investigative arms. 21 Mar 2008 Citizens for Legitimate Government (www.legitgov.org) is digging to find the contractor used by the Bureau of Public Affairs to learn which contractor's employees were fired and disciplined in the Barack Obama passport security breach. Two contractors that produce and issue passports for the US State Department are Stanley and Citigroup, but CLG is NOT stating that the employees of either of these two contractors were involved in the breach of the Obama passport security. --LRP

51. You can always count on Republicans and Sen. Clinton to resort to name calling
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 11:13 AM by powergirl
It is as sure as the day is long. Actually, what Penn, from the Clinton campaign stated was, "If this is true", then this is an outrage. The Clinton campaign wanted to cast doubt on the merits of Obama's complaint b/c they wanted to use it to their advantage. This is the same tactic as using "as far as I know" which is a slimey way of casting doubt on their opponent even if it is without honor. Another example of the slime tactic occurred when a reporter asked if her campaign was using the Wright comments as leverage to put the squeeze on superdelegates, Sen. Clinton ignored the question. (you don't get to ignore questions if you want to be president)

Therefore, I believe your name calling of me, the poster here, is unwarranted in this situation and others. I guess the Clinton supporters are following the example of their candidate - and Republicans. I look forward to an apology for your "foolish" comment. And please note I have never called you or any other Clinton supporter on DU names, ever.

On edit: Here is the exact weasel quote from the Clinton campaign:

Doug Hattaway, a spokesman for Sen. Hillary Clinton, Obama's rival for the Democratic presidential nomination, said, "If it's true, it's reprehensible, and the Bush administration has a responsibility to get to the bottom of it."

http://www.cnn.com/2008/POLITICS/03/20/obama.passport/index.html

There you go: That's the noble and brave statement. That really makes me feel good about her character.

69. It occurred in the fall of 1992, if memory serves
The passport files of Bill Clinton; his mother, the late Virginia Kelly, and Ross Perot were all breached.

The Assistant Secretary of State for Consular Affairs was a Bush 41 appointee named Elizabeth Tamposi, whose family owned a lumber mill in New Hampshire.

Janet Mullins, the Assistant Secretary for Legislative Affairs, and a Jim Baker and Bush family loyalist, was also behind the breech.

Margaret Tutwiler, another Baker/Bush loyalist, petitioned the D.C. Superior Court to be refunded legal fees:

Clinton Bill passport breach 1992

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23736254/

Previous incident
The disclosure of inappropriate passport inquiries recalled an incident in 1992, when a Republican political appointee at the State Department was demoted over a search of presidential candidate Bill Clinton's passport records. At the time he was challenging President George H.W. Bush.

The State Department's inspector general said the official had helped arrange the search in an attempt to find politically damaging information about Clinton, who had been rumored to have considered renouncing his citizenship to avoid the Vietnam War draft.

The State Department said the official, Steven Berry, had shown "serious lapses in judgment."

After a three-year, $2.2 million probe, a federal independent counsel exonerated officials in the incident, saying that while some of the actions investigated were "stupid, dumb and partisan," they were not criminal. The independent counsel also said that Berry and others who were disciplined for their involvement were treated unfairly.

110. I wonder if any other Dem candidates were hit by this?
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 12:19 PM by AnnieBW
Besides Hillary and Obama? I mean, if someone was going on a fishing expedition, they would have been fishing for more than just one candidate.

I'm betting that the orders didn't come from State - they came from the contracting company. Think about it. If the company is someone like KBR, that stands to lose a lot of money if a Dem gets in, then they'd want to get some dirt on as many Dems as possible. Same with McCain. He's come out publicly against torture. If the contractors WERE DynCorp, then they might want to get something on McInsane to blackmail him into caving in on the anti-torture memo. Which, come to think of it, is what he did.

It's an outrage regardless of which candidates were hit. That's private information, and not to be used for opposition research.

113. The difference is that Hillary's happened during a training session
when the instructor told the people to enter the name of a person into the system and the moron being trained entered Hillary's name. The Obama and McCain snooping was just that, snooping. One person - the one who hasn't been fired yet - looked at both Obama and McCain's files. Two other people - the fired ones - looked at Obama's file. No one will know until they investigate the people whether it's Republican operatives, Democratic operatives, nosy idiots or someone looking for dirt to sell to the tabloids.

3 Candidates' Passport Files Breached

By DESMOND BUTLER and ANNE FLAHERTY
The Associated Press
Friday, March 21, 2008; 1:04 PM

WASHINGTON -- The passport files of the three presidential candidates _ Sens. Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain _ have been breached, the State Department said Friday.

State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said the breaches of McCain and Clinton's passport files were not discovered until Friday, after officials were made aware of the privacy violation regarding Obama's records and a separate search was conducted.

McCormack said the individual who accessed Obama's files also reviewed McCain's file earlier this year. This contract employee has been reprimanded, but not fired. The individual no longer has access to passport records, he said.
