8. That's what I'm thinking. It's the "Ooops, equal-opportunity incompetence--
NOT politically-motivated!" diversion.

13. it depends on date of the breach
if it was last week, then we'll know it was a political coverup.

33. what if it was before last week?
If it was before McCain emerged as the presumptive GOP nominee, maybe we can imagine that the administration was trying to influence the outcome of their nomination race.

All in all, it does smell like a clever cover-up tactic to me, but I don't think Bush is above spying on his own party.

edit--besides, McCrazy had already been vetted as VP in 2000 for Chimpy, after he lost.

28. No, they don't care about McCain. If they didn't want him, they would
have done him in before he got the nom. They're letting the old man have his time in the sun, but that BS about conservatives hating McCain is just that--BS, at least at the highest level. Bush and McCain and Cheney are NOT mortal enemies.

16. I bet the peek into McCain's (or the claim thereof) is to deflect
any criticism of the administration targeting just Democrats. It'll make it easier to claim it was just idle curiosity on the part of a few bad apples, and will help cover up whatever nefarious shit they were really up to.

and war and military intervention and Iran. The BushCo cabal do not have a problem with him. He might not have been their preferred guy, but they would have taken him out a long time ago if they had something on him and didn't want him.

31. Not to rain on the conspiracy parade
but isn't it possible, even likely, that these employees just searched for info on famous people? I worked in a hospital a few years ago and it happened all the time (apparently before tracking technology).

40. This is considered a breach of national security, because info
gathered from this can be used against Presidential candidates in any number of ways--blackmail, travel habits, associates, etc. This is not innocent snooping, like when I was a nurse and noticed an open chart on a desk.

45. My Mom called me last night...
in a rage. She worked for both the Army (crypto) and the Federal Gov., had a high security clearance for both and was a data entry person. Her immediate thoughts on this was that there is just no way that someone could/would access that particular kind of information on such a whim -- the clearance requred, the mode of access required, the steps one must take to access the info -- she immediately said something is stinking to high heaven.

36. That would be the simple explanation
But why go with a simple explanation when you can invent a conspiracy? There is generally nothing in a passport file that could be considered as controversial. The breaches show a dismaying lack of professionalism and security, but that's it.

38. I would say eerily reminiscent
but maybe wearily or warily would be better. There have been other instances when Dems came under some criminal attack and belatedly a GOP candidate goes, "Gosh, me too!" Wasn't there some case where Romney said his headquarters had been violated after it happened to some rival. Kerry's computer gone missing. The digital spying by GOP aides on the Congress. The spying on UN representatives leading up to pressure on the vote for war. Numerous other idle curiosity slipups and coincidences in "these things happen without explanation" Bushworld.

Now you see why we need unlimited non-FISA interference for Big Brother George, political spying incorporated since early in 2001. A family tradition of sneaky dirt going back to the first World War.

Shocked, puzzled, amazed, without explanation except it must be the Clinton's fault. Everything is all too familiar, God groaning tiresome crap, including the disingenuous ignorance of the MSM turning instinctively upon the victims.
