15. Chuck Todd: Bill Clinton's statements today very troubling
Source: MSNBC

Bill Clinton has made remarks that seem to undermine Senator Obama's patriotism.

The remarks which include a statement to the effect that a "Clinton-McCain raise would be between two people who love the country without all of this other stuff" (paraphrase)

Todd was asked when he stopped by MSNBC and they were reading the excerpt to him.

He said that the full text was not good and a 'terrible read'. He could not figure out what Clinton was saying that would be good for his wife's campaign.

Should be big news in one hour

287. And they will treat Hillary will the love and respect that Bill and Hillary
have shown him so far this campaign? That ragdoll being torn apart will be either Obama or Hillary. That is some delusional thinking to think that the Repukes will go softer on Hillary than on Obama. It doesn't matter who the nominee will be: a Democrat will be the target of a vicious Republican mud machine.

If she somehow pulls off the nomination, the ring wing will be slavering to tear into her.
They will rally the base with their hatred of the Clintons, and if Clinton gets so mad about Obama's little campaign mailers, then how will she handle it when garbage like 'C U Next Tuesday' becomes the NORM?
Billy boy can kiss McCain's ass all he wants...McCain's campaign will not return the courtesy.

233. Not to mention that Bill Clinton of all people shhouldn't go there
Not after his 1969 letter, where he spoke of how some loathed the military was revealed in 1992. As to owing someone - he was defended by a highly decorated veteran.
Mr. KERRY. Mr. President, I also rise today--and I want to say that I rise reluctantly, but I rise feeling driven by personal reasons of necessity--to express my very deep disappointment over yesterday's turn of events in the Democratic primary in Georgia.

I am saddened by the fact that Vietnam has yet again been inserted into the campaign, and that it has been inserted in what I feel to be the worst possible way. By that I mean that yesterday, during this Presidential campaign, and even throughout recent times, Vietnam has been discussed and written about without an adequate statement of its full meaning.

What is ignored is the way in which our experience during that period reflected in part a positive affirmation of American values and history, not simply the more obvious negatives of loss and confusion.

What is missing is a recognition that there exists today a generation that has come into its own with powerful lessons learned, with a voice that has been grounded in experiences both of those who went to Vietnam and those who did not.

What is missing and what cries out to be said is that neither one group nor the other from that difficult period of time has cornered the market on virtue or rectitude or love of country.

What saddens me most is that Democrats, above all those who shared the agonies of that generation, should now be refighting the many conflicts of Vietnam in order to win the current political conflict of a Presidential primary.

The race for the White House should be about leadership, and leadership requires that one help heal the wounds of Vietnam , not reopen them; that one help identify the positive things that we learned about ourselves and about our Nation, not play to the divisions and differences of that crucible of our generation.

We do not need to divide America over who served and how. I have personally always believed that many served in many different ways. Someone who was deeply against the war in 1969 or 1970 may well have served their country with equal passion and patriotism by opposing the war as by fighting in it. Are we

now, 20 years or 30 years later, to forget the difficulties of that time, of families that were literally torn apart, of brothers who ceased to talk to brothers, of fathers who disowned their sons, of people who felt compelled to leave the country and forget their own future and turn against the will of their own aspirations?

Are we now to descend, like latter-day Spiro Agnews, and play, as he did, to the worst instincts of divisiveness and reaction that still haunt America? Are we now going to create a new scarlet letter in the context of Vietnam ?

Certainly, those who went to Vietnam suffered greatly. I have argued for years, since I returned myself in 1969, that they do deserve special affection and gratitude for service. And, indeed, I think everything I have tried to do since then has been to fight for their rights and recognition.

But while those who served are owed special recognition, that recognition should not come at the expense of others; nor does it require that others be victimized or criticized or said to have settled for a lesser standard. To divide our party or our country over this issue today, in 1992, simply does not do justice to what all of us went through during that tragic and turbulent time.

I would like to make a simple and straightforward appeal, an appeal from my heart, as well as from my head. To all those currently pursuing the Presidency in both parties, I would plead that they simply look at America. We are a nation crying out for leadership, for someone who will bring us together and raise our sights. We are a nation looking for someone who will lift our spirits and give us confidence that together we can grow out of this recession and conquer the myriad of social ills we have at home.

We do not need more division. We certainly do not need something as complex and emotional as Vietnam reduced to simple campaign rhetoric. What has been said has been said, Mr. President, but I hope and pray we will put it behind us and go forward in a constructive spirit for the good of our party and the good of our country.

Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 05:00 PM by Uncle Joe
I also believe it was a subliminal racial attack, because Obama's preacher had vented his anger against the U.S. over it's racial past and the corporate media has done virtually nothing but focus on race ever since. It's like a memory stack. So by bringing this up in the manner he did, the whole issue of race is covertly kept alive in the minds of the voters.

I agree it was very wrong for Bill to suggest this, but I gave up on the Clintons years ago.

134. Yes, but three translucent white women commentators are scouring
Obama's "typical white woman" comment.

It's absurd. Have you noticed that the biased ones (save for Pat Bucannan) tone down their rhetoric when there's a black commentator in the room? Hell, even if it's the biased Ken Blackwell.

Go figure? - We're all more BIASED with our "own kind."

When you consider that he is not able to contain his words and she can't either~ what kind of decisions would they make for our country.

It's not about Obama to me in this case.

As much as I support Obama, the Democratic Party needs to do whatever it needs to do to send them both on a long vacation.

If that means making it a GORE/OBAMA ticket, do it. But this duo is dangerous.

But I am reminded of that statement he made at the beginning of the campaign.

The one about "He would take a world tour with GHWB when Hillary was elected President etc."

Boy, GHWB let him know instantly that there would be no tour.

THAT was telling to me and it has gone downhill from that time.

He is smart enough to pick up social cues but he is not connecting at all.

And remember when they were in Iowa(?) and she was trying to get him to stop talking and get in the car?

He didn't get it then either. :scared:

of our times".

My mom met him at his book signing here -- what, two years ago? -- and she reminded him that he borrowed my bro's sax and sent him a nice thank you letter. (She snuck the letter in to show him.) He seemed fine then. I'm not sure if that was before or after his surgery, though. Maybe I have the dates messed up.

244. I met him at his book signing too.
I took my 86 year old Mom in a wheelchair to meet him.

We are African American and there was a line two blocks long waiting to see him.

He was so thoughtful and had a wonderful smile.
The Secret Service agent directed him over to my Mom.
He smiled and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
The entire room clapped for my Mom and it was one of the happiest days of her life. She adored him.

Sad to say, she is disappointed in him now.

This Bill Clinton is not the man that I met that day.
That man could not turn against our community like he is doing.

Something has changed and now I am actually afraid for him/them to be in the power seats. Not just because I am African American but because I care about my country.

133. He's right. Obama has shown he stands with a man

who says "God damn America" from the pulpit of his church.

Wright also compared baby Barack to baby Jesus in his Christmas morning service.

I never realized that Barack was born in a stable in Bethlehem and had to sleep in a manger.

All this crap about how "impoverished" Obama's childhood was is ridiculous. His "single" mother had her parents living nearby for back-up, and she remarried within a few years after Barack's father abandoned them, then lived in a gated community in Indonesia. Barack was always sent to private schools, even after his mother's second marriage broke up. Just what did he have to do without?

It's like Michelle Obama, in an interview for the New Yorker, saying she wants to feed her girls organic fresh fruit but then asking who has time to shop every day and who can afford it. Somehow, I think she could send her full-time maid to do the shopping and if she can't afford fresh fruit, living in a home that cost 1.57 million dollars, maybe they need to sell that mansion and buy something smaller.

She also whines about how she and Barack had to pay off student loans -- as if the rest of us didn't! -- and about the difficulty of affording summer camp and piano lessons for her girls.

Since they earn $480,000 a year, not counting all the book royalties Obama gets, all this poor-mouthing she does is ridiculous.

not really - but they should.

Bottom line and I've said this before - Bill really doesn't want Hillary to win the nomination nor become president. Subconsciously he is doing things that cut her off at the knees and make her look bad.

He wants to be the Big Dog in the family and show who wears the pants suit.

"I think it would be a great thing if we had an election year where you had two people who loved this country and were devoted to the interest of this country," said the former president. "And people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues, instead of all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

The former president made the comments to less than 80 audience members at an invite-only event focused on veterans issues.

207. There was a time when Bill Clinton's patriotism was challanged in a primary
Edited on Fri Mar-21-08 03:24 PM by karynnj
It was February, 1992. His challenger, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran was calling him out as a draft dodger. This had the potential of again ripping the country apart over Vietnam. Another Senator, also a highly decorated veteran, who was friend of Clinton's challenger took to the floor of the Senate to make a plea against inserting the rifts from the Vietnam War into the primary.

I wish that Bill Clinton would have had the grace to say that all three of this year's candidates love this country. Here are the words said on the Senate floor in 1992:

"Mr. KERRY.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To those Clinton supporter's on the other thread arguing that Kerry owed him for the lukewarm support Clinton gave in 2004, consider that Clinton already owed Kerry - for this and for standing up for him on many things in the 1990s - including many military issues - where Kerry had the credibility he lacked.

I really need to know if he prefaced these comments by specifically using the example of Hillary and McCain as the contenders or was he just making a generic comment without any names?

If he didn't link Hillary and McCain it is a relatively benign comment. "Other stuff" could refer to just about any of the political sleaze flotsam and jetsam that surfaces in our crappy personality driven, non-issue oriented races.

If he did first specifically characterize these comments as describing what a race between Hillary and McCain would look like, then the comments are odious and malignant.

http://firstread.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/03/21/794670.aspx

At a small VFW hall in Charlotte, NC, today, former president Bill Clinton contemplated a McCain/Clinton general election matchup, saying that it would one between "two people who loved this country" without "all this other stuff that always seems to intrude itself on our politics."

So much for trying to give the benefit of the doubt.

The subliminal message I think he is selling is:

If Hillary and McCain run, we won't have to deal with all this race stuff that keeps rearing its head.

268. Power? Money? More Power? More Money?
Sometimes the obvious answer is the simple answer is the true answer.

Unfortunately, he missed on the biggest message of all - he forgot what and who he was supposed to stand for. His brand is now tarnished. He now stands for no one. Not Democrats. Not Republicans. Not Liberals. Really not anyone at all except for himself and Hillary.

266. Bill, can't you come up with something better than that?
The Bill Clinton I remember was a brilliant politician who knew the art of persuasion.

When he comes up with vacuous spin in support of his wife's campaign, I suspect he's grasping at straws for want of a more substantive and persuasive argument.

271. Please allow me to break it down for those of you who aren't getting it.
"I think it'd be a great thing if we had an election year" ... we might not have an election year like this.

"where you had two people who love this country," ... that would be Hillary and McCain, who love their country. Dunno about that other guy.

"who were devoted to the interest of the country, and people could actually ask themselves who is right on these issues." ... So Hillary and McCain are the only two candidates who can give us a substantive, issue-based campaign

"instead of all this other stuff which always seems to intrude itself on our politics.".... This other stuff, like this week we have had all about that black preacher, (which Obama tried to turn into a substantive conversation on race, but race isn't a 'real' issue, it's all that other stuff.)

274. Thanks. PLUS, the quote left out what he said BEFORE that part where he
heaped praise on McCain and then Hillary, so he was CLEARLY talking about them and dissing Obama at the same time.

and I wish the FULL quote was somewhere. It even makes it worse since he precedes the statement by praising McCain for about 4 sentences!

Surely he must believe that the same would be true of an Obama v. McCain race.

Bill, don't make me lose the still-sizable amount of respect I have for you. Please.

285. I'm sorry, but I can't believe that Bill Clinton honestly believes
that Barack Obama doesn't love this country as much as his wife or John McCain.

I just can't.

If he does, however, it isn't racist on Clinton's part--but it is horribly ignorant and very damning.

new narrative surrounding Wright's "Goddamn America" and other things like the smears about him not putting his hand over his heart, not wearing a flag pin, etc. I truly think he'll say anything to win, and the Clintons ARE trying to convince the superdelegates that he's not electable because of Wright.

coming here and reading the quote. What is left out of the quote is what he said before. He was clearly referring to Hillary & McCain. After seeing it, I looked at my husband and asked if he thought Bill was just plugging a McCain/Hillary ticket. It was that obvious.

301. There was no question Bill praised McCain, then his wife, then went on to say how great it would be
to have a race between two people who loved their country, blah blah blah. So if it was OBAMA vs. McCain, he implied, it would NOT be between two people who loved their country without "all this other stuff..." (the Wright stuff, the flag pin stuff, the hand on heart stuff...) :eyes:
