Regardless of the nominee...I think beating McCain is simple.
In this thread, I will not talk about who will win the Democratic nomination.

Why? Because I'm not here to beat another Democrat. I am here to beat the Republican nominee, John McCain.

I think the strategy is simple...and I hate to say...Rovian. We attack him on one of his strong points. And that strong point is experience. But probably not in the way you expect.

No it's not the fact that he's got experience. It's the fact he's got so much experience. The amount of experience that can only be piled up BY SOMEONE THAT IS OLD.

I'm not into ageism. I go to the elders in my family (all close to McCain's age) because of their wisdom. They've seen it and done it. I respect them.

But at 71 (am I correct?), I have serious concerns about McCain's age for a job that age the occupant three times that of normal aging.

The past few days, McCain slipped up 3 times on the Iraq/Al Qaeda comments. Lieberman had to actually correct him during a speech. THAT'S how inaccurate his comments were. He's either knowingly lying...or his mental faculties are slipping.

I think by make his age an issue, we can attack him without below the belt punches...and really make it a serious doubt in undecideds minds.

I don't despise McCain. I feel pity for McCain. And I think that needs to be our approach. To speak of him in respect...but with serious concerns about his age. We need to point out all the times he commits slip ups that can be attributed to age. And we need to hammer them home.

I think in this way, we can whittle away at his possible independent supporters without coming off as agenda driven mouth pieces. Instead we can come across as truly concerned. And I don't know about you...but I am indeed genuinely concerned after seeing the videos of his recent gaffes. I am not crazy about his policies by any stretch of the imagination.

But after the past few days...my NUMERO UNO concern has become his advanced age for someone seeking the highest office in the land.

Just a thought. No disrespect to any of our more mature posters. I wouldn't want the position myself...and I'm 35...just recently the legal age to hold the position. I just don't know why anyone would consider someone who is ALREADY beginning to show signs of senility..and hasn't even taken the position yet.

Any thoughts?

1. Keep referring to McCain's "half a century" of service to his country.
50 years is a long time but "half a century" sounds like a freakin' eternity.

2. That's a great way to frame it...
I'm not very good at the concept of "framing". But I know the Republicans are. And man are they effective at it.

Great post.

4. It sounds good, but remember Reagan.
The voters didn't seem to care how old and mentally incompetent he was. Of course, he was an actor.

5. I think all we need to do is tell the American People how much
the Iraq war is costing us...$10,000 each person I understand.

I could do some really nice things for $10,000.

6. Once the GE starts..... Obama's campaign will turn McCain into a caricature of Bob Dole....
....and Obama will win the election relatively easily.

7. You've made an excellent point.
I think McCain will definitely be withering to a wilted state by the time he has to duke it out with Obama or Clinton. And I might add, that if we don't beat McCain- it is SIMPLY over for America-period. So much of what has happened under the neocons has washed any semblance of what the founding fathers had implemented, to the degree that it all seems like a fairy tale now, but dammit, it is still OUR CONSTITUTION, and we need to take it back!!!!!

9. We have to use every weapon available, being careful not to
imply in any way, shape or form a lack of patriotism or anything like that. I'd focus on age and forgetfulness (Lieberbush as cue card guy), the weird Beach Boys parody, his uber pro-NAFTA stance especially - McBush can't wait to offshore your job. 100 years of war, saber rattling with Iran. There's lots to work with.

10. In order to beat McCain, you must have someone capable of beating him.
Someone who can compete hard out West in a general, (we don't have that), someone who can at least put Florida in play down south (we don't have that). Someone who can foil the Repukes strategy of defining our candidate. (And it looks like we don't have that).

McCain's got an easy path to the White House.
