Obama begins ad blitz in Philadelphia
http://www.philly.com/inquirer/home_top_stories/20080322_Obama_begins_ad_blitz_in_Philadelphia.html

By Gail Shister

Inquirer Staff Writer
The Barack barrage has begun.

With 31 days until the Pennsylvania Democratic primary, Sen. Barack Obama yesterday began airing the first pre-primary ads on Philadelphia TV stations.

According to public records, the campaign spent about $330,000 on 30- and 60-second spots that will run on six area stations through Monday, the state deadline for voter registration.

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, with a double-digit lead in state polls, has yet to hit local airwaves in the run-up to the April 22 primary. A total of 158 Democratic delegates are in play.

The Obama campaign apparently started the TV ads here in Philadelphia yesterday (Friday). I haven't watched local TV to see what the ads look like, but have heard his radio ads since last Wednesday. It will be interesting to see how this plays out as it seems that Clinton, other than perhaps having financial problems, seems to be waiting for the next big negative to use in an ad rather than go on and put out some standard issues-oriented advertising. The election in PA is now a month away from today and I expect it to heat up in the next couple weeks.

Anyone in the rest of PA see any TV ads from either campaign?

I was working on my computer and I heard Obama's voice,
but I didn't think.. coz almost every cable channel is
running news from the week... it wasn't until it was over
that I sat up and thought: That was an ad!

Was that WFMZ? I know I get that station on my Comcast cable.

The station website has a video and transcript of a TV news story on the voter registration in Allentown here: http://wfmz.com/view/?id=240933

7. The article goes on to say
Edited on Sat Mar-22-08 08:37 PM by BumRushDaShow
The largest piece of Obama's $330,000 broadcast-TV total - 40 percent - went to longtime ratings leader 6ABC. CBS3 followed with 22 percent; NBC10, 21 percent; FOX29, 12 percent; myphl17, 3 percent; and the CW, 2 percent.

Given that Obama is strong among young men, he bought two 30-second spots on CBS3's airing of the NCAA basketball tournament: one for $18,000 during last night's Villanova-Clemson game and another for $9,000 during today's coverage.

Over the four days, the campaign paid $86,595 for a total of 33 ads on CBS3, according to records. At sister station the CW, it was $5,370 for 13 spots. At NBC10, $83,025 for 47 ads; at FOX29, $39,430 for 39 ads.

Records at 6ABC and myphl17 were not made available.

Guess I'll have to tune in this weekend. Seems he is doing buys of a chunk at a time and another set might be due after the voter registration drive ends.

13. Saw another at 6:45 a.m.
It was an understated, policy themed ad,
very "John Edwards populist" focus
on blue collar jobs, the economy,
health care, his community organizing experience.

He was just dressed in shirt sleeves,
and low key.

the message was for the workers.

14. Money Problems
The volunteers up here in the Lehigh Valley have been scratching our heads for the past two weeks on where are the Clinton Volunteers and supporters. Now the Obama ads have hit.

I think this can be summed up simply from the FEC reports people were looking at. Hillary has no money. She's relying on Rendel's organization here to get her the votes she needs. It may work it may not. The only caution to that is she needs to be active in the rural counties in PA to put her over the top. Rendel has no organization out there. Rendel became govenor by running up the vote in Philadelphia and the surrounding subburbs. The problem with that strategy is Philly is 44% African American and the subburbs are the Latte sipping liberals. Not to mention the huge student population from Temple, Penn, Drexel, Villanova, etc Unless there is a giant reversal in the demographic trend of who votes for who she's not where she needs to be.

She needs to be in the rural counties to win and with the lack of money I don't think she has the resources.

and it's the same there as well...

Personally I think people are burnt out with the whole election thing since the primaries started so soon and the campaigning has been going on for over a year.

19. Good to know...
He is making buys around the state simultaneously.

The linked article seemed to suggest just a bare minimum for here... But it apparently didn't take into account similar buys across the state. And this is IS a big state! And of course, he's hasn't nor should he run through all his money like Ghouliani and Clinton hoping to win one "big" state.

21. Lol
It's called strategy. What is wrong with registering new democrats. My mom registered as a democrat to vote for Barack and she plans on doing it in the general election.

I met a volunteer last night who switched his registration from Republican to democrat...he's volunteering for Barcak.

These are hardly the National Review types that are doing it. We have a lot of moderate republicans in this state who are not to happy with the past 7 years.

Grow the party. That's the major problem I have with the Hillary campaign and I will vote for her if she is the nominee. She hasn't done anything to grow the party. You can't win with what Kerry and Gore had.

And this seems to be the group switching to the Democratic parties... I've been surprised at the good number being reported changing over... and not due to being ditto-heads...

23. Saw more Obama tv ads....
Two last night, one this morning.

They're running that populist ad that stressed the plight
of those without jobs, blue collar ethic, and family.

But I haven't seen any Hillary ads, just the signs in
yards and bumper stickers..
