Allowances
(Note: This is my daughter's letter to Barack Obama, which included a donation to his campaign.)

March 18, 2008

Dear Barack Obama,

I would like to start off with this note: fantastic job on your speech today. "Worthy of President Lincoln," as Chris Matthews said. It's nice to see that someone is actually standing up for unity in this country. After all, isn't that what this country was built on? Uniting many diverse cultures and people to make one nation? That was how this country was created. I am very grateful.

Secondly, I would like to say without prevarication, I hope you are the next President of the United States and that I believe you will be. You have given many Americans hope that people really aren't as divided as some people suggest, that we really are one nation. I may only be fourteen years old, but I can certainly tell what prejudice and segregation has done to humans.
I mean, just look at what has happened in our country for the past 7 years. Our country was becoming more and more and more divided.

Then you came along.

Politicians were not meant to be sneaky or power-hungry, and you are neither of those things, a great politician. The government was made to serve the people, and I honestly think that is what you want to do. Serve the people, unite the people, stand up for the people. That is what the very core of you is made up of. Essentially, that is you.

To be fair, I do think that the democratic candidates you were competing with really did want to help the people as well, especially at the beginning of the campaign. Sadly, power reared its ugly head again, and now they are controlled by a lust for power. It is quite strange, because I would not think someone running for President of the United States would be power hungry. I think your opponent is, and that is what made me decide to support you, instead of Senator Clinton.

Just to let you know what really matters to me, here are a few things:

1- The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan
2- The economy in the United States (and the rest of the world)
3- Health care
4- Global warming
5- The United States' foreign policy

And, most importantly, division in America and throughout the world. I think we could probably solve all the problems in the world -- if we just worked toward and succeeded at getting unity first. To be candid, I think it is perfectly stupid and ignorant to be distracted and divided by
race. When I say that, I mean it is stupid to judge someone based on what color skin they have. Prejudice in general...that's something that matters to me. My extended family is, like your own, a wonderful mixture of colors and backgrounds.

"Prejudice is the child of ignorance," and prejudice and ignorance are some of the biggest causes of failure I have seen. I do not care if you are a Republican, a Democrat, an Independent, from the Green Party. I do not care if you are Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, or any other form of religion. I do not care if you are black, white, red, yellow, or blue. All I see when I look at a person is just that: a person. I'm not saying it doesn't matter where you come from or who you are; obviously it does. You should be proud of the person you are. It helps each of us contribute to your family, your school, your community, and your country. That’s why I am writing this: because my sister (age 10) and I want to contribute to your campaign. We have saved our allowances, and want to be part of your campaign.

One last note: please, talk more about how to end the war in Iraq, and bring the US soldiers home.

Candidly yours,

I think her mother and I have done well. I also am thankful for the high quality of public school teachers in rural, upstate New York. She has a lot of teachers in school who encourage her to think about the issues of the day. Our society bebefits when we, as adults, also listen to the voice of the younger generation. Thank you for taking the time to listen to my daughter!

6. "Prejudice is the child of ignorance"
The truth of that simple phrase is monumental. How will we ever accept each other as long as we separate ourselves from each other? This sentiment is as pertinent as it was when I first read a variation of it many years ago in the pages of the novel, "To Kill a Mockingbird":

"You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view--until you climb into his skin and walk around in it."

We are all human beings. That is our commonality. We all want safe shelter, food and water and the chance to be happy. Our common enemy are the ones that divide us - and even they, deserve understanding.

Give a big hug to your daughter from me, Mr. Waterman. She sounds like an incredible human being.

:hi:

I think that industrial (and post-industrial) society has made a conscious effort to convince itself that children and youth have little of significance to say. And that's a shame, because the wisest among us, and the healthiest cultures, all recognize that the exact opposite is true.

She's obviously a joy ... the kind of teen, like our own Ava, that gives me confidence in the perpetual resiliance of youth. It reminds me of how much I enjoyed teaching high school math, way back when ... and how we seem to vest all of our values and beliefs in our kids even as we're overcome with the toxicity of cynicism.

Sweet kid! Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

My 7 year old made her first campaign sign, for Obama, of course.

She has asked two really good questions about the campaign recently. First, she noticed that John Edwards was no longer showing up on the TV shows and she got very upset. "Where is John Edwards, Mom! What happened to him? Why is he goooooone." Funny thing is, she was never an Edwards supporter. She always liked Obama first, Clinton second.

Then she wants to know, why is this campaign going on for so long? I want to know the answer to that one, too. I feel your pain kid. x(

51. Great letter
My daughter is an ardent Obama supporter in her high school, and a war protester. We are in a suburban (republican leaning until recently) CT town, but her outspoken views didn't stop her from becoming president of the student council. While she can't vote in this election she is working to register those who can. My older boys are supporting Obama as well, but I'm not sure what they will do if Hillary wins in a questionable fashion.

You, who are on the road,
Must have a code that you can live by.
And so, become yourself,
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams,
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by.
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by.
And feed them on your dreams,
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.

Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.......

62. Wow! Impressive. I wish MY 14 yr old son would write a letter like that.
I basically had to coerce him into hearing "The Speech", b/c I thought it was so important and worthy of his attention. Afterwards, his reaction was that he thought it was a bit "sophisticated" and he didn't think the topics really applied to him b/c he was too young and can't even vote yet. :( Sigh.

You can lead a horse to water....

Don't worry, though. I won't give up on him or my hopes for his developing political maturity. :D
