BREAKING: Obama Supporters At Democratic Underground Say: "Not This Time!"
March 23, 2008
For Immediate Release

It would seem that even the internet blogs and forums, widely known for being unregulated, can say "enough is enough".

After Barack Obama's stirring speech, A More Perfect Union on March 18, and buoyed by the endorsement of Bill Richardson, posters at the progressive site Democratic Underground.com have called for an end to the divisive rhetoric that has marred this primary season and has grown to untolerable lengths since the controversy over Jeremiah Wright injected a nasty element of race into the campaign.

Posters are being encouraged not to respond to inflammatory and racially-motivated posts and to "Let It Sink", a refrain which has come to signify the effort to clean up this particular internet forum. Already, the success of the effort is apparent, as topics with racially divisive and inflammatory titles quickly disappear from view. Supposedly a moderated forum, it would seem the influx of new posters and those intent on creating an atmosphere of hate and division, have outnumbered the ability to moderate it. The posters are taking matters into their own hands and are being rewarded with a return to civility and ability to discuss issues of merit.

Not quite satisfied with that, many posters have joined with others on sites such as Daily Kos to bring pressure on MSNBCs wall-to-wall coverage of Jeremiah Wright and what they consider continous race-baiting by commentators such as Pat Buchanan and Joe Scarborough.

In his speech, Barack Obama told America and the world that we could continue with business as usual or stand up and say, "Not This Time". Much like the grassroots effort which has fueled his campaign, the grassroots on the internet are taking up this call and protesting with their keyboards: Not This Time.

For we have a choice in this country. We can accept a politics that breeds division, and conflict, and cynicism. We can tackle race only as spectacle - as we did in the OJ trial - or in the wake of tragedy, as we did in the aftermath of Katrina - or as fodder for the nightly news. We can play Reverend Wright's sermons on every channel, every day and talk about them from now until the election, and make the only question in this campaign whether or not the American people think that I somehow believe or sympathize with his most offensive words. We can pounce on some gaffe by a Hillary supporter as evidence that she's playing the race card, or we can speculate on whether white men will all flock to John McCain in the general election regardless of his policies.

We can do that.

But if we do, I can tell you that in the next election, we'll be talking about some other distraction. And then another one. And then another one. And nothing will change.

That is one option. Or, at this moment, in this election, we can come together and say, "Not this time." This time we want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native American children. This time we want to reject the cynicism that tells us that these kids can't learn; that those kids who don't look like us are somebody else's problem. The children of America are not those kids, they are our kids, and we will not let them fall behind in a 21st century economy. Not this time.

Millions across the nation, from sea to shining sea and to the grassroots of the internet, evidently agree on one thing: Yes We Can Heal this Nation.

2. Not this time! Damn straight. We will fight for what we believe in, and
what we believe in is not a bunch of petty, childish bullcrap.

It's time to take back Washington, people, and we have a huge turnout for the Democrats on our side.

We have the numbers, the organization, the grass roots, and the most energized base I've seen in a long time.

Time to Kick Ass people!

9. Stronger than ever, no doubts! Not this time!
You cannot shake my resolve. So don't even try.

I never felt this in 2000 or 2004.

This man is a leader. It's something John Adams knew when he saw George Washington.

There are times in our history where this country really needs a leader. I do not want to see America waste anymore time.

Now is the time.

I just don't see much reality backing it when I scan down through the titles posted at GD-P.

I guess being the 13th recommendation on a thread that was later locked by the mods for obvious reasons doesn't count as hypocrisy?

202. Hi yerself
Barack Obama delivers speeches designed to go beyond the usual single-issue barriers. Speaking in a wonky manner may appeal to a few hardcore policy jocks, but it doesn't connect with people. That's how a dipshit like Bush could get (s)elected. However, unlike Bush, Barack actually DOES policy. Consider:

Part of Obama's healthcare plan includes subsidies to be made available to individuals and families who do not qualify for Medicaid or SCHIP. Those who need it will receive an income-related federal subsidy to buy into a new public healthcare plan or they can use it to purchase a private health care plan if they choose.

(I will admit that Hillary has the advantage on that one since hers gets a little closer to USP, but it's still far short. However, I do think Obama's plan has a better shot with Congress).

His early childhood education plan has a couple of cool features:

Obama's comprehensive "Zero to Five" plan emphasizes early care and education for infants and will double funding for the main federal support for afterschool programs, the 21st Century Learning Centers program. I used this program years ago and it worked very well. I'd love to see its funding jacked way up.

Poverty plan highlights:

* Put transit dollars in underserved areas so people have access to more jobs
* Create a "Green job corps" to expand opportunities in industries that develop energy-saving technologies and solutions - I love this one
* Reduce prison recidivism by funding post-incarceration education, job training and substance abuse programs - We have more prisoners in the U.S. than FREAKIN' CHINA! This issue must be addressed and I'm happy that Obama is behind it.

To sum up, there is plenty of substance to back up the rhetoric. The speeches Barack delivers are short on specifics because specifics don't register with most voters. His oratory emphasizes leadership (as in, "Here's what we can do together"). In contrast, Hillary comes across someone who's applying for a job (as in, "Here's what I can do for you").

Obama's positions and plans are all there for the reading, and the truth is that he and Hillary have few significant differences. The big difference between the two campaigns is in each one's approach to the electorate, and I believe Obama has stronger leadership skills than Clinton. He prefers to bring people closer, while Clinton prefers to conquer. Both are brilliant and would make fine Presidents, but Obama has the kind of big picture thinking that we haven't had since BILL Clinton was Prez.

209. Bill
We have more prisoners than China? Good God.

I've been saying all along that Obama is very Clintonesque (a la Bill); he's a fence-mender who will try to put a compassionate face on this mess by offering a patchwork of policies intended to alleviate some of the suffering, while not affronting the Right, or the Gen-X'ers, who, though more progressive are nonetheless not too keen on taking care of the Boomers. Hillary, on the other hand is more about UNDOING the policies of the Bushco administration, and I believe would be more proactive re: major health care changes, child care, etc.

I think Bill Clinton was a fantastic president, and was perfect for 1992, at what might be considered the height of the conservative revolution. As Bushco has shown, things could have been a lot worse had Clinton not been there. I would not support Bill right now, however.

185. Well, I had the same question about rickroll
I clicked the link, and my teenage daughter heard the music and came running saying "rickroll?" Someone is doing that on your your board?

Apparently it happens all the time on the Twilight (a vampire series about to be made into a movie) board she hangs out on. She tried to explain it to me, but I still don't get the attractionl. But it appears to be popular on all sorts of boards. Who knew?

42. "Let It Sink" - The Movement
It's become more than just good advice,
it's become a "Movement".
It's a move towards civility. It's pointless to argue with them.
They won't quit until Hillary does. When she does, we can purge
our ignore lists and give them a second chance. Till then, "Let It Sink"

It's also a move towards freeing up our time
to concentrate on the real opponent; Crazy Train McCain and the GOP smear machine.
He's such an easy target it should easy. In politics, piling on is allowed.

So from now until Denver
post for Obama and call out McCain,
but if it smells like Troll stink,
"Let It Sink" is the frame.

52. "Its a Move Towards Civility".. very well said. And this really is the point. It isn't
a childish game, or oneupsmanship. It is clearing away the nastiness and garbage from our minds so we can collectively focus on the America we will build with President Barack Obama, very soon. It will be a reality :-)

162. Not to be confused with "sink", the game.
SINK
A GAME

by Ala Hera, E.L., N.s.; RAYVILLE APPLE PANTHERS

SINK is played by Discordians and people of much ilk.

PURPOSE: To sink object or an object or a thing... in water or mud or anything you; can sink something in.

RULES: Sinking is allowed in any manner. To date, ten pound chunks of mud were used to sink a tobacco can. It is preferable to have a pit of water or a hole to drop things in. But rivers - bays - gulfs - I dare say even oceans can be used.

TURNS are taken thusly: who somever gets the junk up and in the air first.

DUTY: It shall be the duty of all persons playing "SINK" to help find more objects to sink, once; one object is sunk.

UPON SINKING: The sinked shall yell "I sank it!" or something equally as thoughtful.

NAMING OF OBJECTS is some times desirable. The object is named by the finder of such object and whoever sinks it can say for instance, "I sunk Columbus, Ohio."

Thank you for helping a new arrival here. The point is to ignore negative hate speech and strive for unity.

Oh, and keep snarking on Hillary. We're only for uniting those of us who are already united. All disagreement with us is hate speech. The word democratic in the title for the site is just for laughs. It's sarcasm right?

131. First, Welcome to DU
:hi:

Second, I think you miss the point of the OP. I think it is saying that it is time for us to come together as a party. The latest polls show McCain up against both Obama and Clinton. This is not much to worry about at the moment, but if we allow the divisiveness to continue until the convention in August, we will have handed him the election.

As far as snarking on Hillary, yes, there are people who do that. The worst of those people are being called out, especially those who link to hit jobs from sites such as World Net Daily. The let it sink strategy works on those posts also. I can't speak for everyone, but the people who post 'Hillary is evil' threads don't get my recommendation, any more than the anti-Obama flames do.

I think it would be better for everyone if we posted positive comments about our own candidates instead of negative ones about the other candidate, but if you would rather post negative comments, please feel free to do so. If you are posting ad hominem attacks against either candidate, as opposed to substantive comments, I will quickly ignore what you have to say.

143. Thank you for the welcome
I agree that positive statements would be more productive. I may be a little cynical but from the majority of the replies here, I could be forgiven for thinking that the OP meant it was time for the party to come together only as long as as you support Obama. I am a HuffPo refugee where any mention of another candidate gets you hate mail and sarcasm.

I am looking for ways to support the candidate that looks like he will be the eventual candidate in November. I would like to support the candidate rather than just vote for him. The problem is that just as I begin to warm to him, I come across the o-mi-god posts and start questioning again. My skepticism is mistaken as cynicism and my questions are taken as slams.

My preference would be for the Democrats to get along but drop the idea of cooperating with the neocons. I will, of course, vote for the Democratic candidate, but I wish that there were less of the nastiness towards Hillary. There is no more reason for it than for the Barack bashing. So I will enter into this brave new world. But there is no sense in reading posts that answer my questions about Obama by claiming Clinton is a neocon devil. That kind of ignorance scares off thinking people.

Thank you again for the welcome.

116. Been there, done that
This next month, I am paying nearly $900 in addtional income tax from my retirement income. So I cannot afford to contribute as much as I did last month. However, seeing the pure shit that Obama has had to wade through this past week, I had to make at least a small contribution. So use it well Sen. Obama.

I am so impressed that in spite of the way the Clintons and the media have been pounding on him all week, he has actually, per Gallup, increased his lead on Clinton. This simply demonstates that the man, speaking honestly and directly from his heart, can overcome any difficulties on the way to his nomination and election.

I just posted on DU a response to a Hillary supporter engaging in the usual language of divisivness, "No you don't! :grr: Not this time! :grr:

I will confess I was a Hillary fan, but there is someting that draws me to Obama. I've put all my hopes, dream, and years of searching for the right person to hold the highest office in this land that has my complete confidence. I want someone who will do the right thing, not someone who says they will but never does. There is something about this guy that inspires. I am looking forward for a government of the people and for the people, vs one that serves the corporate and lobbiyist world. Its taken 40 yrs for and inspiring Democrat to rise up and support our core values. Can we win........"Yes we can".

"a totality of related parts : an entity that is a complex or systematic whole"

Were are all different but a more perfect union is a function of unity.

Lead us to unity, Obama.

typed 'let it sink' on an obnoxious thread and we were told that we are not into discussing issues. What a joke? I believe that thread was eventually locked, not sure. 157. Thanks for reminding me what these primaries are all about.
It's about working to get the best President possible.
I know who that is for me.
Barack Obama.

And, of course, working to heal this nation. Obama style.

I live in a small town but I'm doing what I can.
Got three nice window posters for myself and friends.
Got some beautiful magazine covers of Obama. What a handsome man.

Login at DU to put my finger on the pulse of the moment.
And have to thank ekwhite for his post.
I'm trying to get over the Clinton machine of lies and smears.

So, "If it stinks, let it sink" is one new motto for me.
And I'm gonna try to live by it.

Even if I see do see a "floating stink" once in a while.

What are the folks over at Trinity UCC thinking about? We just had a week of non-stop coverage of Obama and Rev. Wright. He gave a speech that SHOULD have put this to bed. However, they delivered sermons there this morning just about guaranteed to continue the news cycle on this subject.

182. Welcome to DU. I watched the sermons, did you? Many of us were
absolutely moved by the love and beauty and glory and power and full frontal Christian joy of the Trinity Service. Look here:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5220551

Now, I understand you are new, but as you can see, a good portion of us support Trinity here. Perhaps you might want to take some time and read and get to know the heart of the matter prior to posting and suggesting, as I think you are, that an Historical Church supporting the Southside of Chicago and with a congregation over 10,000 strong and a worldwide outreach and ministry, should STOP HOLDING SERVICES.

Peace...

183. Veteran Posters Saying Same
Yes, I am new here. And I did read the thread you referring to. Others there, veteran DUG members, have echoed my sentiment.

In that same thread, UALRBSofL (1000+ posts) wrote:
This attention is NOT helping Obama in trying to distance himself from the race label. <...> In my opinion, Rev Moss is merely keeping the race issue alive and growing.

REF: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x5220551#5220954

And why is it that, as a new poster, my words are twisted out of context? No where did I imply or suggest they stop holding services. But comparing media coverage of Rev. Wright to the crucifixion of Christ is just begging for another media storm.

From what I have read, we are wanting to get this OFF the news cycle so we can focus on the real issues.

I hope that Trinity won't allow people like you to change the mission of their church. They were established well before Obama began running for president, and they'll survive long after. I understand that you & Sean Hannity aren't willing to let it go, but most of us have moved on.

For more than a month my ignore list has grown in direct correlation to a reduction in stress.

I'm sure most angry primary posters are great progressives and soon we'll all be on the same page whatever the outcome, but for now it's just easier not to engage with them. "Let it sink" is my new mantra.

196. None of this carried any weight with me to begin with. Just to distract from McCain/Hagee insanity
Tim Russert says to Obama..."Harry Belefonte recently said..." Get it. He's black, you are black...so he must have something to do with you. The on other time Russert brought up Belefonte's name was when he was interviewing Colin Powell. More importantly than race...and why race is used to distract from this is...the have and the have nots. It's economics stupid. It's the rich dominating the rest of us. It's corporate control and the privatization of our democracy by privatizing our election process. I didn't hear Wright say anything that wasn't true and accurate. I'm white and never felt intimidated by any of his comments. Now Hagee insults the hell out of me with his war talk to bring on Armageddon and kill all jews who don't become Christian so the rapture will come. And he is invited to help advise foreign policy??? That's insanity. No wonder McCain seeks out fanatics to support him...who else is insane enough to vote for him except fanatics and Bush supporters...but I repeat myself. McCain can 't talk about real issues so he sets out to attack the candidates themselves...their character. I was amazed to find dems saying anything about this Wright crap. Only people already voting for McBush give it any importance. It just angers the rest of us that the right would assume it was a big deal. What idiots.

205. What you call "rising above it"
I call a priori censorship.

Nowadays, Obamites seek to become the censors whose desire is to close our eyes, shut our mouths and close our ears, too.

You may shy away from the cognitive dissonance which surrounds you, but don't elevate such cultist behavior into a holier than thou attitude. You simply want to control all mediums of conversation.

Sorry, but a vigorous Democracy calls for a vigorous DISSENT to keep everyone honest. Your honesty, is only that which condemns opposite frames of reference and points of view.

You are very sad indeed.....

206. I Get It Now
If you support Hillary Clinton your stupid and racist.
If you think Reverend Wright's speeches are anti-white as well as anti-American your stupid and racist.
If you dare question any of Obama's words or explanations your stupid and racist.
If you ask why are Obama supporters attacking fellow Democrat Hillary Clinton with such hatred your stupid and racist.
If you do not agree with the premise that if Obama loses the nomination or the general election it would have to be stolen from him your stupid and racist.
If you would like to know why is it OK to look into Hillary's past public life but not Obama's your stupid and racist.
If you don't agree with the absurd notion that Obama could have a 20 year relationship with Wright and not know his views your stupid and racist.
If you question the fact that a first term Senator with an unremarkable legislative record is qualified to be President, well if that Senator is Barack Obama your stupid and racist.
If you believe that President Clinton is being disrespected by the party he made relevant again your stupid and racist.
I know Hillary Clinton has her supporters, and that the most liberal of Democrats post on these boards so it runs about 90% for Obama, but you just don't see Hillary supporters dragging Obama through the mud with vile, hateful attacks on his character. But who the hell am I to talk, after all I'm just stupid and racist.

223. I see six threads on my greatest page
every single one of them saying something nsaty about Hillary Clinton. I assume I will find you on every one of them asking your fellow supporters to refrain from nasty personal attacks? right?

224. It's not over yet
I check in on some of the right-wing talkers, and I think that we should prepare ourselves for another wave of attacks. This thing is not over. They are coming up with new material to attack Obama.
