Barack Obama/Gary Hart 2008 - Please Read This and Consider
The '88 scandal means nothing. It's old news and after Bill Clinton - nobody cares. What Hart has is great foreign policy credentials, anti-terror credentials, gravitas, geographical balance, a bridge to older voters, great speaker, good campaigner - and he loves Obama.

GoBama with HART!

1. Hart's brilliant. He should definitely be in Obama's administration.
He knows exactly how deep the rabbit hole goes. If not VP, he should be in charge of Homeland Security, if Obama even continues to let the department exist under his administration.

5. No question - I very much agree
About Hart's book "The Courage of Our Convictions: A Manifesto For Democrats:

"Former U.S. senator and presidential candidate Hart remains a strong voice in the Democratic Party and has proven himself an effective writer. Both his voice and his writerly talent are exercised in his latest book, which is addressed to his fellow party members. Hart's extended essay revolves around a central question: What does the Democratic Party stand for these days? He begins answering the question by admonishing Democrats to redefine their collective principles and core beliefs. He chastises Democratic leaders in Congress for initially supporting the invasion of Iraq and not speaking out strongly later, for "surrender so supinely to an undertaking deeply questionable in its premises and fatally flawed in its conclusions -- with so little challenge." To ensure the Democratic Party becomes a "necessary" party again, Hart sees what needs to be said and done on such fronts as getting out of Iraq, rethinking national security, protecting civil rights, and safeguarding the environment. Not empty words, not shallow ideas."

"Hart proves he is one of the great thinkers of the Democratic Party - still."

"Gary Hart carries weight. When Hart speaks, Washington listens. This book shows why."

8. If only he won against Mondale in '84, things would be a lot different.
He probably would've beaten Reagan and been an excellent president.

I see this primary race as a repeat of Hart versus Mondale, right down to the endorsements. Mondale endorsed Hillary Clinton and Hart endorsed Obama.

Hopefully we'll get it right this time.

10. Older voters? Older voters are BULLSHIT at that bastard.
He had it, and he BLEW IT. And he acted like a jerk back then, too.

He's best where he is--an "emeritus" politician.

Older voters, if they just have to vote for a geezer, will go for Popeye.

13. Why is it, I wonder, that when someone on this forum makes a simple observation,
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 03:09 PM by MADem
that someone with an opposing viewpoint is compelled to PERSONALIZE said observation with a "personal" snark-remark.

The MA is for Massachusetts, FWIW. The Dem is self-evident.

I'm not "MAD."

I just call them as I see them, and those who don't realize that what I am saying is simply based on observation--not "anger" (it's always easy to dismiss anger, you see, and not pay attention to any essential truths imparted)--will indeed have their preconceived notions disabused eventually, as events take their course.

I intend to vote for the Democratic nominee. Even if it is the unimpressive and uninspiring Senator Obama (your mileage may vary as to the man's talents, but as I said, I call them as "I" see them). But of those of my acquaintance, of my age and stage in life, faithful and reliable voters all, if Clinton is denied a chance to compete fully, well, those folks--they won't be with me. It'll be Popeye all the way for that crowd. And that's in "liberal" Massachusetts.

And Gary Hart as a pot-sweetening VP won't be enough to change their viewpoint. In fact, he'd have the OPPOSITE effect. A lot of Democrats blame his philandering ways for the bullshit we've had to deal with up to now. His intemperate behavior blew our party's chance to take the White House. People don't forget. Forgiveness is one thing, but trust is something else altogether. He just doesn't have the people's trust, because he put himself and his own personal desires ahead of the party.
