God bless Reverend Wright..
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 09:45 AM by cooolandrew
If he made you talk if he made you think, then god bless this man. Any decent preacher should make you think about the rights and wrongs of society anything less they really are not doing their job. A certain Reverend in the 60s did similar, MLK and today has our deep reverence. Thinking and understanding is what our party does best and I hope continues to do so.

2. but...how dare you compare Rev. Wright to MLK?
MLK was a true civil rights champion, and Rev. Wright is nothing more than a race-baiter.

Nevermind the fact that MLK made some pretty "incendiary" statements back in his day, and was labeled as a race-baiter by many.

17. Fidel Castro has been demonized for very good reasons...
Cuba: Fidel Castro’s Abusive Machinery Remains Intact
Major Obstacles Remain for Human Rights

(Washington, DC, February 19, 2008) – Despite Fidel Castro’s resignation today, Cuba’s abusive legal and institutional mechanisms continue to deprive Cubans of their basic rights, Human Rights Watch said today. The counterproductive US embargo policy continues to give the Cuban government a pretext for human rights violations.

“Even if Castro no longer calls the shots, the repressive machinery he constructed over almost half a century remains fully intact,” said José Miguel Vivanco, Americas director at Human Rights Watch. “Until that changes, it’s unlikely there will be any real progress on human rights in Cuba.”

For almost five decades, Cuba has restricted nearly all avenues of political dissent. Cuban citizens have been systematically deprived of their fundamental rights to free expression, privacy, association, assembly, movement, and due process of law. Tactics for enforcing political conformity have included police warnings, surveillance, short-term detentions, house arrests, travel restrictions, criminal prosecutions, and politically motivated dismissals from employment.

Problem is, a good portion of white people, when they get on the receiving end of racism, instead of learning from the experience, use it as an excuse to get angry throw hissy fits.

Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 10:12 AM by elana i am
and a fairly progressive one at that. at least it used to be.

this is a board where at any other period in time other than this primary season i would expect the rev. wright to be lauded and for us to celebrate his rare ability as a member of the clergy to see reason and to espouse progressive views. he is someone that even a progressive atheist such as myself can respect.

this board right now is some kind of parallel universe that resembles hell, would that i believed in a hell. i've even resorted to ignoring formerly progressive, currently reality challenged posters. and there's a LOT of them!

You are right. Noam Chomsky or Howard Zinn says many of the same things Wright does, and they are lauded for it here. There has never been a time since I've been posting here, when the spreading of RW memes such as "reverse discrimination" was tolerated. And the DU that I know and love was never a hotbed of kneejerk jingoistic patriotism where people got all outraged because someone criticized America. Yet I've been seeing that here lately, and it's (sadly) not just newbie trolls.

43. Sounded like a person speaking the truth? I dont understand...
why so many people agree with the media on this, I don't see where he lied about anything. For some reason many Americans listen to the media and are only outraged at something when the media is, the sheeple term just fits so well, those people cant even think for themselves. I would love to have seen the response these clips would have got throughout America if it WERE NOT on the news media. I would bet that it would have been allot different.

Your sarcastic response to the issue, is very telling of your view on the country and the people who live here. I,m not sure what response you want but it gives me a bad view of Americans if they are threatened by the truth that surrounds many of us. Also, whenever I see people around here using it as political ammo instead of the serious issue that race is for so many of us, they show me who they are as well.

Judging from your responses here, it seems clear to me that you already have your mind made up about people who disagree with you. What I saw on that video disgusted me. It was racist and vile and was an attack on Hillary for being white.

I want no part of that, regardless of what you or anyone else may think of me.

Should I ignore the awful things that Pat Robertson has said simply because he has done a lot of charity work? Of course not.

I will change my opinion about Jeremiah Wright when he apologizes for mocking the righteous indignation Americans felt in response to the 9/11 attacks. Until then, I will assume that he has not been misunderstood.

41. My point was to illustrate the logical absurdity of that poster's position
They were asserting that it was doubtful that MLK would say similar things about 9-11 that MLK did. When I pointed out that they had no idea what Dr. King would do, they tried to act like that's what they said. So I used the admittedly hyperbolic and jarring child molester analogy to demonstrate how intellectually dishonest the poster was being. Basically the poster was trying to use MLK to trash Rev. Wright. And then had the further nerve to compare Rev. Wright with Pat Robertson. The Hillbots are using RW memes and liberal concepts interchangeably at this point and I'm tired of it.

The only intellectual dishonesty here is your attempt to suggest that I claimed to know what MLK would have said about the 9/11 attacks. What I wrote is that I doubt that MLK would have questioned American indignation in response to the 9/11 attacks and I have a very good reason to think that.

28. Did he?
Did Wright question indignation over the 9/11 attacks? In the sermon I heard (the entire sermon), he was very sorrowful and asking hard questions, among the hard questions was the one that Malcolm X proposed regarding JFK's assassination about chickens coming home to roost. There wasn't really much controversial about that sermon at all.
