Question about Let It Sink
When someone posts 'Let it Sink' in a thread is that a signal to not respond any further to that thread?

If so, why do people respond to the 'Let it Sink' post?

Just wondering.

2. It's a way of saying "Please do not feed the trolls."
Quite frankly, a lot of the people in here stirring the shit are freepers trying to get us at each other's throats.

Arguing with them on this forum is pretty pointless, so a better tactic is to deprive them of an audience by letting their threads sink and using the *plonk* (also known as the ignore button.)

...perfectly legitimate threads get tagged along with those which really don't belong here.

47. Obama supporters have a perfectly legitimate right to not participate in your...
so-called legitimate threads. Whether that non-participation is individual or collective is immaterial. You are entitled to your opinion, we are entitled to our opinions and also the right not to express them when we see no point.

51. If Obama supporters wish to decide on which threads they should participate in, then they should...
...make that determination through PMs and stop junking up threads with idiotic chants.

Anyone can see LIS for what it really is... a way to get around the rule which prohibits us from calling each other Freepers.

9. What LIS is really about...
Edited on Mon Mar-24-08 11:24 AM by The Night Owl
A certain element within the Obama camp here at DU has decided that it knows better than the mods how to police DU. This element has decided that it should get to decide which threads don't belong on DU.

The funny thing is that the drones who post LIS tag so eager for adulation from their fellow drones that they are inadvertantly kicking threads as they trip over each other to be the first in a thread to post the LIS tag.

29. Of course it's not binding.
But what a LIS post can do is make other posters hesitate before valiantly leaping to the defense of their candidate/position/cat and ask themselves "was the thread/post really intended to generate discussion, or just to rile people up?" After a moment of hesitation, the answer they come up with is usually "just to rile people up", then they let it sink and the thread dies a well deserved death in obscurity.

The point is, by this point the only way to convince someone is by taking the high road. If you wrestle with pigs, all you get is a mud bath.

unless I missed something. Are you trying to denigrate a life or a race? Are you judging a person's worth by words excerpted from one sermon out of over thirty years of sermons? Are you attempting to bring down a candidate you do not approve with guilt by association?

and sexist crap, from taking over the forum. Consider it a system of quality control. People can do whatever they want, and start whatever threads they want, but sometimes it's wise to consider whether you're not just beating a dead horse or giving someone else an excuse to keep inflicting RW-style injury onto our candidates by responding.

50. It has nothing to do with the moderators. It's a mostly free-speech, free-idea
forum, and they aren't going to shut down threads unless it's really offensive. But there are people here with an agenda--they are not here to simply share their opinions, they are here to stir the shit--you can tell when they just repeat their talking points, over and over, throwing buzzwords into unrelated threads, without engaging in reasoned discourse. I think it's good to step back and realize that sometimes we're being played.

53. Wow, you're reading a little too much into this. It's just a way to remind
each member of the forum, no matter who they support, to decide whether or not a thread is worthy of being kept alive, whether or not a comment is worth responding to. We all have an individual responsibility here to make this a quality place. We have a responsibility to not allow the same smears that are being run on Free Republic and Fox and Hannity to consume us (I'm specifically offended by the Wright thing--it's racial in nature and highly destuctive, divisive, damaging, and pointless to keep rehashing it, but everyone else can make up their own minds about it). The one surefire way to keep this place balanced is to not feed into something damaging to your candidate, or your cause, or whatever. You can vote with your "reply" button, same as folks on Kos can rate the comments. I also think media outlets do lurk on internet message boards like this, because it's sort of the national water-cooler, and very easy and free to access--if all the blogs are erupting and obsessing over something, news outlets start picking up on it, assuming it's probably good for ratings. Sometimes it's good to be reminded of our power, and to use it wisely.
