Obama’s speech meets unsympathetic ears with Americans
March 20, 2008 —

Barack Obama’s speech about race on Tuesday impressed many who witnessed it or read it. But most of America did neither, and many of them -- white and black -- were less persuaded of the speech’s capacity to heal racial wounds, or to put the issue of race behind Obama as he continues his quest for the White House.

That’s according to a new poll by InsiderAdvantage/Majority Opinion.

First, we screened poll respondents to find those who were aware that Obama’s pastor was in the news. A startling 82% knew about Obama’s speech, and about the controversy surrounding the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Of those who knew about the controversy and the speech, we asked,

“Taking all this into account, are you more or less likely to support Obama for president?”

*Less likely* (52%)

More likely (19%)

About the same (27%)

No opinion (2%)

The poll was conducted March 19 among 1,051 Americans. After filtering out those not aware of Rev. Wright and Obama’s speech about him, the sample is 807, for a margin of error of plus or minus 3.2%. The data have been weighted for age, race, gender and partisan affiliation.

33. That's right; besides he can't get to the convention with enough delegates
anyway to claim the nomination. He should step aside already. Pastorgate will only get bigger toward November.

19. Whose woods these are, I think I know, His house is in the village though,
He will not see me stopping here,
to watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer,
to stop without a farm house near,
something, something, something, something,
the darkest evening of the year.

His gives his harness bells a shake,
to ask if there is some mistake,

snip (= I can't remember)

The woods are lovely dark and deep,
but I have promises to keep,
and miles to go before I sleep,
and miles to go before I sleep.

12. What question?
You posted a poll. That's not a question.

If you mean "When will Obama withdraw?" I posit that that's not a rhetorical question and not one that you're asking because you're interested in anyone's answer. But I'll answer: NEVER.

21. He's exactly where he's been all along:
Mote votes, more delegates, more states won. If you consider that "just barely breathing" then the campaign of the person behind him must be on its way to the funeral parlor.

Here's a question --- do you actually believe these doomsday scenarios that you forecast, or is this an attempt to psych out the supporters of "Hillary's opponent"?

29. Speak for yourself.
There is no "everybody." Your use of the term "everybody" is a transparent attempt to claim that there is widespread anxiety among the Democratic electorate about Obama's candidacy. The fact of the matter is that Obama has weathered the "kitchen sink" strategy, to the extent that the HRC campaign's one remaining argument for her candidacy is that the states she carried in the primary are worth more electoral college votes, which is as bullshit an argument as they've yet come up with. Maybe next they can argue that she's won more land mass?

31. Speech on race relations in the US does not explain why Obama
would choose to listen to a divisive at best, preacher for 20 years. It was irrelevant to the concerns his mentor raises.

39. Hillary is 5% (that the probability that she will be the nominee)
When faced with choosing Grandpa Boom Boom McCain't and another 4 years of Bush policies or Barack Obama, voters will choose Obama in LARGE numbers.

You can continue to fixate on Obama all you want; it's just a matter of time before the Clintons drop out.

41. I wonder how MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech would have polled in 1963?
Also - these "more or less likely" polls are interesting, but not very instructive. Someone today may be "less likely" to support Obama - or anyone else - for president. That doesn't mean that they WON'T vote for him. And it says nothing about how they will feel about him in November, after a long campaign.

As I said, interesting, but rather meaningless.
