Taking a breather from politics for a few minutes . . .
is this important???

"Unsexiest" Woman Holds Mirror Up To Judges
Posted March 24, 2008 | 04:42 PM (EST)
-----------------

'Unsexiest Woman' responds
Sarah Jessica Parker and a blogger ask what Maxim voters have against her.

"Am I really the unsexiest woman in the world?"

That's the rhetorical question actress Sarah Jessica Parker posed to Grazia (which actually bills itself as Britain's "first glossy magazine"). She was responding to the title of "Unsexiest Woman Alive" bestowed upon her by a poll of the readers of another magazine, Maxim.

Buzz up!on Yahoo! In questioning their choice, Ms. Parker fails to notice that she's acquiescing to the notion that there really is an unsexiest woman in the world. But she deserves credit for bravely admitting that it caused her significant pain, enhanced, in turn, by her husband's anger.

"Do I fit some ideals and standards of some men writing in a men's magazine?" she asked. "Maybe not." (Plaudits also for taking the trouble to Q & A herself, thus lightening the interviewer's work load.)

I would just comment that I think
Russ Wellen does an admirable job with this in the final paragraphs ---

they vote for whatever they think is hottest at the moment based on what mostly men see physically. they voted Britney sexiest or at least among the top 10 before and now they call her among the unsexiest.

what matters is Sarah Jessica Parker had a hit tv show, she is seen as an icon in fashion, has her own clothing line. personally has a nice life. and yes, she has one of the best bodies around also.

5. so it shouldn't matter, Sarah Jessica Parker never headed in the direction
of Britney. her life has been pretty well and she had made a good name for herself in fashion.

8. it matters
because like it or not actors and actresses sell a product. that product is THEMSELVES- their image, their looks, their ability to act, even.

i will always like SJP cause i liked square pegs, even though i detested sex in the city.

personally, i find her VERY unattractive, but hey... different types for different folks and all

doesn't mean she's not a talented actress and has no relevance to whether or not she's a good person.

you may not have liked her show, but she sold it and it was a hit . just as she is doing in the fashion industry now.

12. right
and she is part of the product.

some like it . some don't.

nobody denies her success.

maxim thinks she is (among those considered sexy) to be the most unsexy.

i wouldn't go THAT far, but imo she is very unattractive

so what? plenty find her attractive.

i'm happy she's doing well in the fashion industry. she's also married to matthew broderick iirc. that's cool too

but looks-wise, she doesn't do anything for me. i find her unattractive

16. not all actors/actresses need to be "sexy"
If sex appeal was a requirement of Hollywood, then half the actors wouldn't be there including just about every male cast member of the Sapranos.

Magazines have celebrated the "sexiest" celebrities for a long time. Although I think it's silly, I would still prefer they stick to that crap rather than crown people the "un-sexiest" because its only purpose is to be cruel for the sake of being cruel. Fortunately women's magazines haven't stooped to this pathetically low level (yet). How lucky for the men in Hollywood.

3. I don't think it's her long face that's unsexy...
I thought she was quite sexy in LA Story when she was young and freespirited looking.

But she has taken on a much harsher look in recent years - bone-thin with a rather haggard look to her face, made worse with heavy makeup and unflattering hairstyles. Her chatty, shallow, whiny sex-obsessed character on Sex in the City has probably also given her a bit of an unsexy image.

Obviously, she's nowhere near the unsexiest woman. I think Maxim is saying she's unsexiest among all the relatively ATTRACTIVE A-listers.

I can think=of other women who are far less sexy, though...

9. My Fiance is the sexiest woman in the history of the Universe.
Who is Sarah Jessica Parker?

Since I've NEVER heard of her, she's relegated to the "unsexy" pile.

11. I am sitting here in total astonishment.
We have another thread running here about Jamie Lee Curtis. It seems that the vast majority of responders think she's beautiful, hot, etc. Then you have this thread where, although early, say that SJP isn't attractive. Being a woman, and looking at sexiness seems different for me than men I guess. I have never understood Jamie Lee Curtis' attractiveness to men. It was always a puzzle to me as the only time I thought her above plain was when she smiles. She has an engaging smile. On the other hand, I think Sarah Jessica Parker is adorable. She has one of those faces, that depending upon her hairstyle, changes, but there are times I've thought her to be downright beautiful and as to sexy? Just walking down the street with her son.

19. In the larger picture, this type of distraction doesn't matter. Yet sometimes,
Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 07:37 AM by OmmmSweetOmmm
everything else can be so overwhelming (and I believe you understand what I mean) that we mere mortals indulge ourselves in these insignificant distractions. One of my most favorite lines in a movie was by Joey Brown in Some Like It Hot. When finding out the woman he's fallen in love with is actually a man, Brown says "Well, nobody's perfect".

21. RIGHT . . .!!!! Everyone here is dealing with the "shit" . . . which I was hoping
Edited on Tue Mar-25-08 12:29 PM by defendandprotect
would be immediately obvious --- but evidently NOT --- !!!

Thanks for "getting it" . . .

My point was who in the hell has the right to evaluate someone in this way --- ?

And I tried to focus attention on the actual comments in the article which I think sum it up ---

In fact, Ms. Parker is the latest in a long line of formidable women stretching from Cleopatra to Bette Davis to Madonna. Though lacking the symmetry of a classic beauty, they bent men -- and the world -- to their whims, whether by disposition, determination, or talent.

The case can be made that Maxim's readers object to having a sex symbol chosen for them on the basis of her success in a "women's" TV series. Also, there's no disputing that La Parker is ubiquitous -- besides TV, from billboards to magazine ads to commercials -- not to mention, much the richer for it.

But, as is too often the case with a poll, it reveals more about the voters than the subject. First, Maxim readers seem oblivious to the extent to which their tastes in women have been shaped by today's surgically enhanced models and actresses. Talk about an image being forced down their throats.

Second, conferring a title as vicious as unsexiest woman alive on anyone reflects a poverty of spirit that, in itself, cancels out a Maxim reader's qualifications to choose the winner of any poll.

This was a male analyzing the situation and I think he did a fair job ---
but I think it is appropo of how women are treated generally in our society ---
something to be judged by males.

I also think it is narrow-minded again of the DU moderators to have moved this out of General
Discussion -- but I can see that they might have done it simply based on the limited observations which came in so often.

Sad . . .

13. There are a couple of reasons for this.
Her character was very unsexy on that show. She was very insecure and dependent on men for personal validation. That sexiest character on the show was the oldest one who was most sexually and personally confident. Aside from that, her fashion sense seems to exaggerate some of features that are less flattering.
