Pennsylvania Dems Set Enrollment Record

Pennsylvania Dems Set Enrollment Record

Tuesday, March 25th, 2008

Democratic Party enrollment surged past 4 million mark Monday, setting state record on last day to register to vote for April 22 primary.

Figures show modest declines in ranks of GOP, independents.

http://www.philly.com/inquirer/world_us/20080325_Rush_to_register_at_Pa__deadline.html">Philadelphia Inquirer: “At the Montgomery County Board of Elections Office yesterday, there wasn’t a single moment when someone wasn’t at the counter clutching a voter registration form.”

2. 4 million DEMS out of a total of 8.2 registered voters is a heck of a
percentage.

If the Dem nominee loses 15% of the registered Dems to McCain but gains the usual 8% of registered GOP, then the Dem nominee won't even need a majority of INDs to win PA. 1/3 should do it. But I expect a majority of INDs to vote Dem this November.

Regardless of current polls showing a temporarily boost for McCain during the Dem infighting, the GOP brand name is so damaged by Bush that PA should be solid for the Dems in November

5. Agree about McCain's damage thanks to the GOP destruction of the U.S.
This is fortunately one thing that the repukes cannot deny and should hopefully be easy for the Dems to jump on once this contest is settled. There is just so much fodder that can be used.

3. The news here was reporting that
the Dems had a 4% increase in registration over the last cycle. As it stands, registered Democrats now outnumber registered Republicans here, something like 4,000,000 to 3,200,000, which is 7,000,000+ registered voters. Pretty amazing for a state of 12,000,000 people.

Article with some stats is here:

16. Majority
A Majority of the people I registered were independents switching to democrat. Some republicans but a majority were the independents...not scientific just personal expereince from the ground.

22. I had read that the "Motor Voter" Law here automatically makes someone "independent"
if they don't specify a party. I remember when that first came into effect and there were alot of registrations that finally occured. So alot of the Indies may have originally been via Motor Voter who never specfied (and obviously couldn't vote in a primary).

21. The 7,000,000 is total (all) voters in the state. Not typo.
Philadelphia alone has something like 1,000,000 registered (~800,000 Dem) voters out of a population of 1.5 million. Of course you are lucky to maybe get ~600,000 actually voting.

I don't think there are many Rash Limpballs changees mainly because there are a couple hotly contested Congressional races going on and other down-ticket things. Plus if the assumption is that Rash is telling them to vote for Hillary but the polls and media keep insisting she will win the state, why bother wasting time filling out registration-change paperwork to do something that has already been ordained?

Pennsylvania belongs to Jesus, Hillary Clinton, and Unions.

Pennsylvania is freakishly Jesus-obsessed.

15. I was out in Union Town, Belle Vernon, Washington, and California, PA near Pittsburgh.
I saw 3 Hillary yard signs, some Ron Paul graffiti, 2 Obama bumper stickers, 1 Hillary bumper sticker, 1 Ron Paul bumper sticker, 2 Bush/Cheney stickers, 4 sets of anti-Bush stickers, 6 pro-Union stickers, a "Christian Left" sticker, and more Jesus-crap than you can shake a cross at.

That is the area that is close to Ohio it has more of a mid west culture than a north eastern liberal....there really are like 3 or 4 cultures in PA, We are the 6th biggest state by population...we are pretty diverse.

Jesus-shirt lady turns to her Jesus-shirt husband and says, "I'm not looking."

You have those people in all states. I lived in NC, CT, and Indiana...and even though CT is liberal they are up there as well. Don't get me wrong I'm a Christian...I'm just a focus on the Sermon on the Mount type.

12. Depends
It all depends on what part of the state you were in. We are a pretty big state and I don't appreciate you painting us all with one brush. PA has three major Urban populations with 1 million plus people each with its own distinct culture and history and we have the rural areas in the middle of the state. As an Obama supporter from PA I'm offended by your remarks. Hillary dismisses people and states. We don't.

28. Based on my non-scientific sampling method, Robert Reich should have been beaten Romney.
Edited on Wed Mar-26-08 01:22 PM by IanDB1
Also, Ron Paul should have carried Massachusetts in the last Primary.

Anecdotal spot-sampling of signs and stickers where I happen to be looking is not scientific.

It's meant to be taken with the largest possible grain of salt.

6. They Won't Have A True Idea Of How Many New Voters They Have For Awhile...
In my area we have registered so many new voters and switched so many independents (and moderate repubs) that the local election office hasn't been able to keep up processing the stacks of forms we've been bringing in. It may be a couple weeks before they're all processed and the actual figures are released. Hillary doesn't even have an office in our area yet, so the great majority of the new democrats are going to be voting for Obama.

The deadline was yesterday and we got plenty of people registered, also many who switched parties.

23. Republicans decline, Democrats increase - how many of those are Republicans?

What's stopping Republicans from all registering as Democrats to vote for who they'd most like to run against?
