Another Hillary Clinton whopper?
Did she "misspeak" about being named after Sir Edmund Hillary, too?

From snopes.com:

Hillary vs. Hillary

Claim: Hillary Clinton was named after famed mountain climber Sir Edmund Hillary.

Status: False.

Hillary Clinton said her mother, Dorothy Rodham, "had read an article about the intrepid Edmund Hillary, a one-time beekeeper who had taken to mountain climbing, when she was pregnant in 1947 and liked the name." Although it is true that Edmund Hillary did not perform the feat that made him a household name throughout the English-speaking world until 1953 (by which time Hillary Rodham was already six years old), it is not true, as many skeptics have asserted, that Edmund Hillary was nothing more than an obscure Auckland beekeeper until then. Even before World War II he was already a serious mountain climber who boasted to a friend that "some day I’m going to climb Everest," and by 1947 he was honing the necessary skills on the peaks of the Southern Alps. It's certainly possible young Edmund was profiled in some periodical as far back in 1947.

However, how likely was Dorothy Rodham, a Chicago housewife, to have seen an article about a New Zealand mountain climber? We performed a comprehensive search of several major American newspapers (including the Chicago Tribune) and found that none of them made any mention of Edmund Hillary whatsoever prior to June 1953, so it's fair to say that the American media paid him little note prior to his successful assault on Mt. Everest that year........

But knowing her, she'll take advantage of this and use it to get Snipergate out of the news. Those Clintons are wily like that.

5. OMG!
It's just like Al Gore saying his mother sang him a union song that hadn't been written yet. Or that he and Tipper were the inspiration for "Love Story". The right wing LOVED to call those whoppers. They talked about them day in and day out, for months on end.

And eventually they convinced enough Americans that Al Gore was a compulsive liar.

Nice to see you guys have adopted the tactic.

Isn't it cool how Snopes took something that has no documented proof one way or the other, and decided Hillary was lying?

Or maybe you can't, because the facts would make your idol look bad.

said.."hillary named after Sir Edmund Hillary?" but I didn't click on ..like who cares?

If they "misspoke" were they trying to send a subliminal message that hilary can climb mountains like she can dodge sniper fire?

15. Billary 08 2 for 1 special
Billary 08... back to the future

Heres your 2 for 1 deal

misspoke
1 : to speak (as a word) incorrectly
2 : to express (oneself) imperfectly or incorrectly <claims now that he misspoke himself>
intransitive verb

liar
1: a person who tells lies

"I certainly do remember that trip to Bosnia, and as Togo said, there was a saying around the White House that if a place was too small, too poor, or too dangerous, the president couldn't go, so send the First Lady. That’s where we went. I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

"I want you to listen to me. I'm going to say this again," he said with a clenched jaw and stern expression that day. "I did not have sexual

relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky. I never told anybody to lie, not a single time, never. These allegations are false."

16. Hillary claimed Chelsea was near the Towers on September 11 - not exactly true.......
There is also the the story that her daughter Chelsea was in danger on September 11, and she claimed that Chelsea had jogged around the Towers that day and had seen the planes hit the buildings and was in danger. Chelsea later denied this story in a magazine article. Chelsea says she was on the other side of the City and had been woken to someone calling her to tell her to turn the TV on and watch the story unfold.

21. Remind me to never intern for snopes...
Or any of the fact-checking sites, for that matter.

My only reaction to this piece is sincere pity for the poor bastards who had to comb through those newspapers looking for a mention of Sir Edmund Hillary.

That's the pain that lying causes, folks. If you're a politician and you lie, at the very least some poor intern is going to have to suffer "fact-checking" your bullshit. It's just not nice.

26. At least the RW, whom you emulate, told it completely.
http://michellemalkin.com/2006/10/17/the-legend-of-hillary-sir-edmund-hilary/

"But yesterday, Mrs. Clinton’s campaign said she was not named for Sir Edmund after all.

“It was a sweet family story her mother shared to inspire greatness in her daughter, to great results I might add,” said Jennifer Hanley, a spokeswoman for the campaign.

In May 1953, Sir Edmund and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, became the first men to reach the summit of Mount Everest. In 1995, shortly after meeting Sir Edmund, Mrs. Clinton said that her mother, Dorothy Rodham, had long told her she was named for the famous mountaineer.

“It had two l’s, which is how she thought she was supposed to spell Hillary,” Mrs. Clinton said at the time, after meeting Sir Edmund. “So when I was born, she called me Hillary, and she always told me it’s because of Sir Edmund Hillary.”

28. I remember this smear from a while ago. I thought and think it's silly.
Her parents telling her some fish story about her name isn't the same as "misremembering" whether or not you had to run from a plane due to sniper fire.

My whole life, my older sister told me that she picked my name after seeing an actress on television. Recently, I said something about that in front of my mother who informed me that my sister was completely wrong. It's completely believable that someone in her family told Hillary that she was named after Edmund Hillary and she believed it (that she forgot she wasn't shot at, not so much).
