baraka, also berakhah, in Judaism, a blessing usually recited during a ceremony

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baraka

Barack Obama, a U.S. politician whose first name is derived from the Kiswahili word, baraka meaning blessed.

26. It's rather obvious that you don't know the difference.
It's also rather obvious that you don't have any idea what you're talking about.

Arabic and Hebrew (and, for that matter, Aramaic, and several other languages) are all members of the same language family and have many cognates. Anyone who is ignorant of this very simple linguistic fact has no standing to make pronouncements on the issue. What you're saying is akin to saying that 'nakt' (Sanskrit for 'night') is a misspelling of German 'nacht', when it ISN"T; they both share the same proto-Indo-European root (as many words in Arabic, Hebrew, Aramaic, etc share a common origin although the languages themselves have been divergent for a very long time).

31. It's not Arabic, It's Swahili
It's a loan word. Yes, Hebrew and Arabic are Semitic languages. But discussing "Barak" as a function of Semitic linguistics makes little sense.

That is a variant on the word blessing ... and is spelled in Hebrew or Arabic differently from Barak, which usually means lightning.

I'm just pointing out the mistake ... seems to me you'd want it correct if you're going to flaunt it.

My parents gave me a very German name, even though we are anything but German! And of course, the spelling is incorrect. Should I be blamed for that? I suppose I could change it, but it's not worth the $300+ price tag to do it, nor the headache of changing it on all my forms.

55. Some possible clarification for those who are confused by this post
What I think the poster is saying is in reference to people who have included in their sig line a campaign image for Obama that has Barack Obama written out in Hebrew letters (see Reply #43 in this thread).

I believe the poster is saying that the Hebrew letter written at the end of the Hebrew version of his first name is not the correct letter to use in that position. (There is a different Hebrew letter for some consonants when they appear at the end of a word or name)

Why this is significant, I am not sure.

80. Can someone who understands this thread please explain it me?
Truly, I don't understand, and I'd like to.

Is there actually some kind of controversy regarding Obama's given name? If so, why?

Thanks in advance.

85. The OP is a Jewish-centric poster who thinks the name Barack shoule be rendered as "Baruch"
in Hebrew since the origin of the Swahili name, 'Barack" has its roots in the Hebrew word "Baruch".

Since it is written in Hebrew, the OP believes, as a Jew, that it is hers to decide how the name should be spelled.

She is mistaken.

It is transliterated (by sound in other words) into proper Hebrew.

There is nothing wrong with it at all. Just a mistaken and self-centered OP.

90. I'm at a loss. I've taught children named Wynter, Destinee, and ShyAnne.
They're names. People don't choose their names, and you certainly can't expect that you can require a spelling.

That'd be like me telling a child, "I'm sorry, Katelynne honey, your name should be spelled Caitlin, so I'm just going to change your records to reflect that."

Thanks.

94. Possible explanation
