4. Activism You Can Do: Help Clinton Produce Her Tax Returns By Sending a "Tax Fax"
Obama posted his income tax returns online today, while Hillary -- who claims to be "the most transparent" politician in America -- keeps dragging her heels. Here's a fun, simple way you can encourage Clinton to be more transparent

Activism You Can Do: Help Clinton Produce Her Tax Returns By Sending a "Tax Fax"

M.S. Bellows, Jr., 03.25.2008

Hillary Clinton, who claims to be "the most transparent" politician in America, isn't. There's a long history of her withholding documents relating to her personal history, her days as First Lady, and her financial records (for instance, why did she wait until after the important primary in NAFTA-hating Ohio to release her daily schedules as First Lady, which show all the work she did to help NAFTA pass?) (For those who are interested, there's more detail about Barack Obama's unusual frankness and transparency, and Clinton's lack of it, in a slightly fuller version of this post on VichyDems.)
....
But Hillary Clinton - who is rich enough that she's personally loaned at least $5 million to her own campaign to keep it afloat - hasn't produced any tax returns since her husband left office. That's seven years during which she and Bill went from being civil servants to becoming incredibly wealthy - yet she won't tell the public where her newly-acquired millions came from.
(At first, she ignored the issue. Then, she said she would produce them sometime "around" April 15.
Now, she's agreed to produce something tax-wise, but not until 3 days before the Pennsylvania primary on April 22 -- nearly a month away, and not leaving Pennsylvania voters much time to really think about any issues her returns might raise -- and won't say exactly what she'll provide: for instance, will it be just the 1040s, or also the schedules and attachments that contain the actual details?)

...Why hasn't she done what every other candidate has done, and made copies of her tax returns
available early enough to make a difference?
Because, she claims, she's been too busy -
as if she personally needs to rummage through her filing cabinet, run to Kinko's, and look up the fax number for the Associated Press.

...So here's an idea: LET'S ALL SHOW HILLARY HOW EASY IT IS, BY SENDING HER COPIES OF OUR OWN TAX RETURNS.
It's ridiculously simple:

1. Grab this year's tax return, and some past years' returns too if they're handy, and copy them.

2. Take a Sharpie and black out any personal information like your name, social security number, etc. - we don't want any identity theft!

3. Scribble a brief note, maybe in huge Sharpie letters on the first page of your return, saying something like: "Hey, Hil: if I can do this, so can you. Please produce your 2000-2006 returns NOW."

4. Fax to one of Clinton's campaign offices. (I say fax, not mail, because all mail to Senators has to be screened for anthrax before it's opened.)

That's it! Grassroots activism at its best (and simplest!). Again: photocopy, Sharpie, note, fax -
and you're a "netboots" activist (informed by the Internet, but taking action, "boots on the ground").
Feel good? It should! More at the link

5. Obama Camp Mocks Clinton: Next She'll Want NCAA Bracket To Decide Race

Obama Camp Mocks Clinton: Next She'll Want NCAA Bracket To Decide Race

March 25, 2008 Sam Stein

The Obama campaign again accused Hillary Clinton of moving the political goal posts in her efforts to claim a legitimate shot of winning the nomination, this time suggesting (tongue-in-cheek) that college basketball could be used to pick the Democratic candidate.

"At some point we will get their NCAA bracket and it will be determined that whoever picked the most number of winning teams will get the nomination," said Obama's communications director Robert Gibbs.

Gibbs was speaking to reporters on a conference call on Tuesday. He declined to answer a direct question as to whether or not Clinton should -- with dwindling chances of winning -- drop out of the race, saying that Obama would never instruct his competitor on how to handle her nomination. But he did note, with a sense of playful analysis, that as Clinton continued to trail Obama in pledged delegates, states won, and popular vote, her campaign has changed the barometer of success.

This past week, Sen. Evan Bayh, a Clinton surrogate from Indiana, suggested that superdelegates should look at how each candidate would fair in electoral college votes in determining who should be the nominee. Such a system, the Clinton campaign said, had validity. Critics charge that state primary elections show little about how candidates would perform in a general election.

6. Hillary Clinton Has Become Nixon
How can you tell Hillary Clinton is lying? Howard Wolfson's lips are moving.

The Clinton Credibility Gap: More Nixon than Gore

Chip Collis, 03.25.2008

Clinton suffered another daily gotcha when her self-proclaimed GI Jane moment - dashing across the Tuzla tarmac while ducking sniper fire - was revealed to be a typical prosaic airport greeting: a cute kid, flowers, the double air kiss, even a poem! Apparently, it took actual footage for the Clinton campaign to realize that Sinbad wasn't just being funny when he called her a liar last week. I could have told them that; Sinbad hasn't been funny since her husband's first term.

In trying to walk back this latest of Clinton's dalliances with dishonesty, Wolfson was quoted as saying, "it is possible in the most recent instance with which she discussed this that she misspoke, with regards to the leaving of the plane."

Nixon destroyed himself because he obsessed over what the Kennedys had "done to him." He went nutsy-commando with the Plumbers, with the Ellsberg break-in and the enemies list and, of course, with Watergate, because he rationalized that it had been done to him, and everyone else was doing it, and so he had to do it to protect his Presidency because he was what was best for - and about - America.

Hillary Clinton has become Nixon.

Clinton feels that all their years of being Atwatered and Starred and Roved meant that she HAD to play the game at sewer level just to survive. In fact, she was JUSTIFIED to play that way, because of what had been done to her and to Bill.

7. "HOGWASH" ON DEADLINE: Hillary's Flight of Fancy
Ron Fournier can tell you all about Clinton's now infamous trip to Bosnia. He was there.

"HOGWASH" ON DEADLINE: Hillary's Flight of Fancy

By RON FOURNIER, Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON - Why wasn't the truth good enough for Hillary Rodham Clinton?

That's a question worth considering as the former first lady tries to contain damage to her credibility after getting caught exaggerating the danger of her 1996 trip to Bosnia. Two others: Is there a pattern of embellishment? And is she held to a higher standard than her rival, Barack Obama?

The answers: Yes, she's held to a higher standard and, yes, she does exaggerate her credentials. Perhaps she's driven by insecurity; Clinton must think her resume needs padding to reflect "35 years of experience" and the promise to be "ready on Day One."

Otherwise, the truth would have sufficed.

The fact is that Clinton and her entourage were warned in advance that Bosnia was hostile territory and that there had been sniper fire reported in the hills surrounding the tarmac at some point before the trip. As a journalist on the trip, the story I wrote began, "Venturing to the front lines of the Bosnia peacekeeping mission, Hillary Rodham Clinton greeted U.S. troops today and heard horror stories about the region's devastating civil war."

Right now Greta VanSustren is "all over" Rev Wright and the fact that a Baptist Church where he was supposed to speak at was canceled for security reasons.

Let's see if she will in addition to throwing Obama and Rev. Wright "under the bus" that she makes that special effort to throw in the ENTIRE Congregation of Trinity Church of Christ?

This is indeed a sad day for both America as well as The Democratic Party.

9. Clintons lose luster with black voters
"What's striking for me is the number of black voters who tell me they could never bring themselves to vote for Hillary Clinton, even if by some miracle, she became the Democratic presidential nominee."

Clintons lose luster with black voters

Dawn Turner Trice March 24, 2008 Chicago Tribune

An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll taken this month found that former President Bill Clinton, the so-called first black president, is falling out of favor with African-Americans.

More of the poll's respondents view him negatively (45 percent) than positively (42 percent).
Compare this with his ratings just last year—a positive of 48 percent compared with a negative of 35 percent— and it's a pretty big deal.

Beyond scientific polls, anecdotal evidence reveals that his wife also is losing support from the Democratic Party's most reliable constituency.

A lot of black people are furious at Sen. Hillary Clinton in part because of the actions or infractions of her surrogates. They're angry at Bill for the dust-up he created after the South Carolina contest comparing Sen. Barack Obama's win there to that of Rev. Jesse Jackson's when he ran for president. They're angry at Geraldine Ferraro for suggesting Obama is mostly an affirmative action candidate.

12. WTF! Rush Limbaugh Taking "Operation Chaos" to North Carolina and Pennsylvania

Rush Limbaugh aims to take his Operation Chaos to North Carolina and Pennsylvania.

Talk radio host Rush Limbaugh wants "dittoheads" to switch parties and vote for Hillary Clinton in the democratic primary. This would reduce Obama's lead and keep democrats in a long drawn out and rancorous primary. The ultimate goal - to help Republican John McCain.

March 25, 2008 "Left Attempts to Disenfranchise, Intimidate Operation Chaos Voters" Rush Limbaugh Show.

Here's Michael in Pittsburgh. Great to have you with us on the EIB Network. Hello, sir.

CALLER: Mega dittos, Rush. How you doing?

RUSH: Good, sir.

CALLER: I just wanted to say that yesterday I filled out my voter registration card, I got it all filled out except the final part where
you check the party and took a little bit of nudging from my girlfriend to finally check the Democrat block. I didn't think I had it in me, but --
...
RUSH: All right, well, look, Michael, I appreciate the phone call. See, this happened hundreds of thousands of times across the state of Pennsylvania in the last two to three weeks due to Operation Chaos, which continues to roll on. Operation Chaos will obviously be in play in North Carolina. Obama has lost his lead in North Carolina. He had a huge lead in North Carolina. In fact, Obama, so concerned about Operation Chaos -- he's down in the Virgin Islands. He's in Charlotte Amalie, in the Virgin Islands, St. Thomas -- he's going to be coming back tomorrow, and I understand that Obama is going to embark on a six-day bus tour throughout the state of Pennsylvania. He's ten points down in the latest Rasmussen poll. He was 11 points down a week ago, in the last polling period. Not sure it was a week ago, but he's taking Operation Chaos very seriously, folks. Six day barnstorming bus tour all across Pennsylvania to counter Operation Chaos.

If She Thinks Richardson is Judas, What are We?

Amber at TPM Cafe - March 25, 2008

I've grown tired of James Carville long ago.
I cringe at the thought of what it would be like if he had been propped at the head of the DNC
as the Clinton's wanted. (Thank goodness for Howard Dean.)

Now with his aweful "Judas" insult thrown at Bill Richardson for his endorsement of Barack Obama,
I know Hillary's disdain for the majority of Democratic voters-of which I am a part of.
What does she think of us? What does she think of herself?

When the "inevitable" had her bubble burst repeatedly, she has moved the goal posts and dismissed the voters. Her push for the superdelegates to override the pledged delegates and now in another spectacular flip-flop, she is officially pushing pledged delegates to change their vote.

We have an interesting look into Hillary's past today, with an article by an attorney who was involved with the Nixon Impeachment hearings: http://www.opednews.com/articles/opedne_jerry_ze_080325_1974_3a_hillary_lost_j.htm">1974: Hillary lost Judiciary Committee job after trying to block Nixon impeachment. Southern Dem warns party to avert disaster

By JONATHAN MARTIN & MIKE ALLEN | Politico | 3/26/08

In an interview this week with Politico, Bredesen said flatly that if the contentious slog continues until the Democrats’ late-August convention in Denver, the party would have a vastly diminished chance of recapturing the White House.

“They have a much steeper, rockier hill to climb if it goes to the convention,” the governor said over a dinner of rockfish and red wine. “You’re going to spend this whole summer – and lots of money and time and effort – trying to convince people that whoever isn’t eventually nominated, isn’t electable.

...Bredesen is doing something about his concerns. He was in Washington this week to promote his idea for holding a “superdelegate primary” in June, in which the 795 party bigwigs would gather to hear one last time from Clinton and Obama before casting a final vote.

Rather than allow the horse-trading and bloodletting go on all summer, he’d get it over with during a two-day business meeting in a neutral, easily reached city like Dallas.

34. Clinton Appears Weary Of Taking 'Sniper Fire'
If you look at the last paragraph, it appears that the media has a double standard regarding running negative stories about candidates. This writer for the WaPO is fine with giving Hillary a free pass on her outrageous lies used to "burnish" her foreign policy credentials.

Clinton Appears Weary Of Taking 'Sniper Fire'

By Michael Dobbs Washington Post Wednesday, March 26, 2008; Page A08

Hillary Clinton has finally admitted that she "misspoke" when claiming that she came "under sniper fire" in Bosnia during a March 1996 visit to U.S. troops enforcing the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement. At first, the Clinton campaign maintained that the "misstatement" was limited to one occasion on March 17 when she talked about running across the tarmac "with our heads down." In an interview yesterday with the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the senator from New York attributed the mistake to her "sleep-deprived" condition.

A review of the record shows that she provided embellished stories of her visit to Bosnia on at least two previous occasions, while campaigning in Iowa in December and in Texas in February. By the end of the day, Clinton was making a joke of her ordeal: "I made a mistake. That happens. It proves I'm human, which, you know, for some people is a revelation."

THE FACTS

While Bosnia may have still been considered a "potential war zone" in March 1996, there were no open hostilities. NATO troops were patrolling the area in force, engaged in tasks such as clearing mines and blowing up old ammunition dumps. According to Adrian Pandurevic of Associated Press TV, "there were no armed groups roaming Bosnia, or any significant threat," and "the former front lines had been bulldozed." He described claims of "sniper fire" in and around the Tuzla air base as "simply ridiculous."

...THE PINOCCHIO TEST

In an effort to polish her foreign policy credentials, Clinton has been telling exaggerated stories about her April 1996 trip to Bosnia for many months. After a week of missteps, she has finally come up with a reasonable strategy for putting the story behind her: Acknowledge her mistake, make a gracious joke about being "human," and attempt to move on. Since I have already awarded her a maximum four Pinocchios for her depiction of the event, it seems churlish to add any more.

Clinton stokes up Obama pastor row

Ewen MacAskill in Washington guardian.co.uk, Tuesday March 25 2008

Hillary Clinton stoked up the row over Barack Obama's fiery pastor today when she claimed she would have left any church where such intemperate remarks had been made.

"He would not have been my pastor," Clinton said, in her first public comments since the Reverend Jeremiah Wright row began more than two weeks ago.

Wikipedia article on Wright - a spiritual and inspirational man, a hero, a veteran

Education and military service

From 1959 to 1961, Wright attended Virginia Union University,<1> an historically black school in Richmond. He then joined the United States Marine Corps and served in the 2nd Marine Division with the rank of private first class. He subsequently transferred to the United States Navy and entered the Corpsman School at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, where he graduated as valedictorian in 1963<5>. He was trained as cardiopulmonary technician at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland and graduated as salutatorian in 1967<5>.

Wright then enrolled at Howard University in Washington, D.C., where he received a bachelor's degree in 1968 and a master’s degree in English in 1969. He also earned a master's degree from the University of Chicago Divinity School. <5>Wright holds a Doctor of Ministry degree (1990) from the United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where he studied under Samuel DeWitt Proctor.

Hillary - you are not worthy to polish this man's shoes!

Career as minister

Jeremiah Wright (center left), in 1998, greeting President Bill Clinton during a prayer breakfast at the White House.Wright became pastor of the Trinity United Church of Christ on March 1, 1972, at a time when its membership was only 87 members. <1> Wright has received a Rockefeller Fellowship, and has also been a professor at Chicago Theological Seminary, Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary and other educational institutions. Wright has also served as the Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Black Theology Project, and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Virginia Union University and of the City Colleges of Chicago. Wright has received seven honorary doctorate degrees, including from Colgate University, Valparaiso University, United Theological Seminary and Chicago Theological Seminary. <5> Wright, who began the "Ministers in Training" ("M.I.T.") program at Trinity United Church of Christ, has been a national leader in promoting theological education and the preparation of seminarians for the African-American church.<6> Wright has received three presidential commendations and was named one of Ebony magazine's top fifteen preachers.<7>

Relationship with Barack Obama

Barack Obama, a candidate for the Democratic nomination for president, first met Wright and joined his church in the 1980s, while he was working as a community organizer in Chicago before attending Harvard Law School.<8> Obama and his wife, Michelle, were later married by Wright, and both their children were baptized by him.<9> Obama's book The Audacity of Hope was inspired by one of Wright's sermons<8> and he credits his own introduction to Christianity to Wright.<9>

The public invocation before Obama's presidential announcement was scheduled to be given by Wright, but Obama withdrew the invitation the night before the event.<10> Wright wrote a rebuttal letter to the editor disputing the characterization of the account as reported in the New York Times article.<11>

In late 2007, Wright was appointed to Barack Obama's African American Religious Leadership Committee, a group of over 170 national black religious leaders who supported Obama's bid for the Democratic nomination;<12> however, it was announced in March 2008 that Wright was no longer serving as a member of this group.<13>

Controversy

Sermon clips
During 2008 Presidential campaign, Wright's alleged beliefs and previous remarks became heavily scrutinized, due to his relationship with Democratic Presidential candidate Barack Obama. Wright had officiated at Obama's marriage, baptized his children, and Obama was a member of the congregation of the Trinity United Church of Christ for over 20 years. Critics have accused Wright of using Black liberation theology to promote black separatism.<14> Wright has rejected this notion by saying that "The African-centered point of view does not assume superiority, nor does it assume separatism. It assumes Africans speaking for themselves as subjects in history, not objects in history." <15>In one sermon Wright is quoted as saying "All of God's children white, black, red, yellow, male, female, all together".<16><17>

Wright once stated that Zionism has an element of "white racism", but the Anti-Defamation League says it has no evidence of any anti-Semitism by Wright.<14>

In March 2008, ABC News caused a public uproar by broadcasting spliced sound bites from a sermon that Wright gave shortly after September 11, 2001,<18><19> in which Wright paraphrased Edward Peck,<20> former U.S. Chief of Mission in Iraq, former deputy director of the White House Task Force on Terrorism under the Reagan Administration and former U.S. Ambassador to a number of countries, who was appearing on Fox News, as allegedly having said: "We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye...and now we are indignant, because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought back into our own front yards. America's chickens are coming home to roost." Wright went on to state: "Violence begets violence. Hatred begets hatred. And terrorism begets terrorism. A white ambassador said that y’all, not a black militant. Not a reverend who preaches about racism. An ambassador whose eyes are wide open and who is trying to get us to wake up and move away from this dangerous precipice upon which we are now poised. The ambassador said the people that we have wounded don’t have the military capability we have. But they do have individuals who are willing to die and take thousands with them. And we need to come to grips with that."<21>

In another sermon from which sound bites were taken out of context and widely aired in March 2008<19>, Wright first makes the distinction between God and the government, and points out that many governments in the past have failed:"Where governments lie, God does not lie. Where governments change, God does not change."<22> Wright then states: "And the United States of America government, when it came to treating her citizens of Indian descent fairly, she failed. She put them on reservations. When it came to treating her citizens of Japanese descent fairly, she failed. She put them in internment prison camps. When it came to treating her citizens of African descent fairly, America failed. She put them in chains, the government put them on slave quarters, put them on auction blocks, put them in cotton field, put them in inferior schools, put them in substandard housing, put them in scientific experiments, put them in the lowest paying jobs, put them outside the equal protection of the law, kept them out of their racist bastions of higher education and locked them into positions of hopelessness and helplessness."<22> Wright concludes by stating:" The government gives them drugs, built bigger prisons, passes a three strike law, and then wants us to sing God bless America. No, no, no, not God bless America, God damn America, that's in the Bible, for killing innocent people. God damn America, for treating her citizens as less than human. God damn America, as long as she pretends to act like she is God, and she is supreme. The United States government has failed the vast majority of her citizens of African descent."<22>

In other sermons, Wright is quoted as saying:"The government lied about inventing the HIV virus as a means of genocide against people of color"<23>

Critics have accused Wright of promoting black separatism.<14> Wright has rejected this notion by saying that "The African-centered point of view does not assume superiority, nor does it assume separatism. It assumes Africans speaking for themselves as subjects in history, not objects in history." <15>

Wright's church has criticized the media for recent coverage of his past controversial sermons, saying in a statement that Wright's "character is being assassinated in the public sphere."<24> As well, Dean Snyder, the senior minister of Foundry United Methodist Church in Washington D.C., which the Clintons attended while in the White House, released a statement defending Wright and decrying his treatment in the press that said in part, "He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. He has been a vocal critic of the racism, sexism and homophobia which still tarnish the American dream. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence."<25> <26>

Eminent theologian Martin E. Marty defended Wright by focusing on his church and explaining, "For Trinity, being 'unashamedly black' does not mean being 'anti-white.' <...> Think of the concept of 'unashamedly': tucked into it is the word 'shame.' Wright and his fellow leaders have diagnosed 'shame, 'being shamed,' and 'being ashamed' as debilitating legacies of slavery and segregation in society and church." Marty went on to criticize the "incomprehension and naiveté of some reporters who lack background in the civil rights and African-American movements of several decades ago".<27>

Mission to Libya

Wright traveled to Libya and Syria with Rev. Jesse Jackson and Minister Louis Farrakhan on a peace mission that resulted in the freeing of United States Navy pilot Lt. Robert Goodman, whose fighter jet had been shot down over Lebanon. At the White House on January 4, 1984, hours after the group arrived back in the U.S., U.S. President Ronald Reagan welcomed Lt. Goodman and said that the "mission of mercy" had "earned our gratitude and our admiration."<28> <29> <30>

Wright has stated that his trip implied no endorsement of either Louis Farrakhan’s views or Gaddafi’s.<14>

41. CBS - Can you trust Hillary Clinton?
New CBS Video Contradicts Clinton Again
Admits She Misspoke About 1996 Bosnia Trip; Mentioned It In Iowa,
Texas And Also Last Week

March 25, 2008

...She claimed she misspoke and was sleep deprived, but CBS News has found several times in the past few months Senator Clinton used the Bosnia trip to try to show her international experience, reports Sharyl Attkisson. Clinton did so in Iowa in December, Texas in February and also last week

...In a March 17 speech in Washington, Clinton said of the Bosnia trip: "I remember landing under sniper fire. There was supposed to be some kind of a greeting ceremony at the airport, but instead we just ran with our heads down to get into the vehicles to get to our base."

That account was still posted on her campaign Website Tuesday.

Clinton told CNN last week, "There was no greeting ceremony, and we basically were told to run to our cars. Now, that is what happened."

Several news outlets disputed the claims.

Clinton began retracting the remarks in a series of private interviews Monday and Tuesday before addressing about two dozen reporters here after a speech.

52. The Speech Helped

The Speech Helped

by Devilstower Wed Mar 26, 2008

There's little doubt that the Rev. Wright's words, with 30 years of sermons trimmed down to a few three word phrases, was enough to cause trouble for Senator Obama.

On March 18 - the day of Obama's speech - after clips of Wright's sermons had permeated the media, Clinton held a seven-point lead over Obama.

But after the speech?

The first major national poll taken since Sen. Barack Obama's speech on race in America shows Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton in a virtual tie, reversing Obama's slide in the polls after the wide airing of controversial remarks made by his pastor, the Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

"It's hard to disentangle the impact of (Obama's) speech," Gallup Poll Editor in Chief Frank Newport said Tuesday. The latest Gallup Poll, taken March 22, showed the Illinois senator with 47 percent of the national Democratic vote and Clinton with 46.

Despite desperate efforts by the pundits to slice and dice Obama's speech into loose phonemes and reconstruct them in some way they could ridicule, it seems that a good percentage of people actually listened to the speech.

Hopefully this is not just a good sign for Barack Obama, but a good sign that the country is ready to engage in honest dialog over divisive issues. So all the naysayers -- from Juan Williams to Pity-Pat Buchanan -- who declared that Obama should have instead thrown away all connection to his church and groveled for forgiveness, can now move on to their analysis of how the American people just don't get it

55. More details on PA registration - Early numbers are looking good

More details on PA registration

Ben Smith Politico March 26, 2008

Jay Newton-Small says the early numbers look good for Obama:

Although the final numbers are not yet in, so far registration has swelled 84,801 since the 2006 elections —
that's 11% of the 790,000 people who voted in the 2004 Democratic primary.
Last week alone 50,347 people became Democratic voters, according to Pennsylvania's State Department,
bringing the state party's total to over four million for the first time ever. Since the beginning of the year, 86,711 Republicans
and Independents have switched affiliations, and in just the last three weeks 34,104 new voters registered as Democrats.

Significantly, 64% of those who changed parties were in the 12 largest counties — urban areas that have large African American and educated white populations, demographics that are Obama's strength. "I think he has a chance to pull off an upset here," said Ray Owen, professor emeritus of political science at the University of Pittsburgh. "The rates of changes in registration and new registrations indicate that some independents are joining the new voters
in registering Democratic."

58. Clinton Wounded By Bosnia Comments
Wednesday, March 26, 2008

US News

Clinton Wounded By Bosnia Comments

The brouhaha over Sen. Hillary Clinton's sniper-infested description of her trip to Bosnia in 1996 reached a crescendo in the media in the last 24 hours, despite efforts by Clinton to defuse the situation. In addition to being the butt of late-night comedian jokes, all three network news broadcasts last night led with critical coverage of Clinton, with the CBS Evening News running footage of three instances in the last few months of Clinton claiming to have been vexed by sniper fire during the event. ABC World News reported in a lengthy and negative piece, "In light of the Bosnia incident, Clinton's other foreign policy experience will now face tougher scrutiny," and correspondent Jake Tapper added, "The bottom line is, Senator Clinton's biggest claim on the presidency is her perceived experience. Her biggest weakness as a candidate, is the fact that so many Americans do not trust her. The fact that her biggest weakness could undercut her biggest strength is potentially devastating." NBC Nightly News reported that Clinton "further clarified her comments about dodging sniper fire" after "pictures showed her receiving a warm welcome."

Bloomberg News reports Clinton "and her staff said she misspoke when saying she landed under sniper fire during a March 1996 trip to Bosnia as first lady." In Greensburg, Pennsylvania, Clinton said, "I did make a mistake in talking about it the last time, and recently. I made a mistake. I have a different memory. That happens. I'm human. For some people that's a revelation."

The situation set off another round of sniping between the Clinton and Obama campaigns. The New York Times reports Clinton "tried Tuesday to put a softening spin on her misstatement that she ran from sniper fire at an airport in Bosnia as first lady, saying the comment was a mistake that 'proves I'm human.' Yet Mrs. Clinton quickly found herself explaining a new comment, that it was the first time in 12 years she had told the story wrong." Obama advisers "pounced on the new remark, sending reporters an e-mail message with the subject line, 'first time in 12 years she misspoke?'" Clinton's campaign "responded with an e-mail catalog of Mr. Obama's 'exaggerations and misstatements.' The campaign cited his saying that he was a law professor - he was a senior lecturer - and that his parents fell in love because of the historic 1965 civil rights march in Selma, Ala., even though he was born in 1961. He later said he was referring broadly to the civil rights movement."

The AP adds Obama's campaign "fueled the Bosnia brouhaha Tuesday, sponsoring a conference call with Pennsylvania reporters that featured retired Maj. Gen. Walter Stewart of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard. Stewart said he was assigned to the Army's European headquarters when Clinton visited Bosnia as first lady in 1996. He said her claim that she landed under enemy fire insulted U.S. soldiers charged with her security. Clinton's explanation that she misspoke was 'really astonishing,' said Stewart, who supports Obama."

61. Obama adds another Super Delegate Rep Lipinski (IL)
Congressman Dan Lipinski is backing U.S. Senator Barack Obama's presidential bid.

Lipinski had been one of the two remaining holdouts among Democratic superdelegates in Illinois' congressional delegation. He says he's endorsed Obama because of the candidate's emphasis on overcoming partisanship and uniting the country.

Lipinski's district in southwest Chicago and its southwest suburbs narrowly voted in favor of Obama over New York Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton in Illinois' presidential primary last month.

Representative Rahm Emanuel of Chicago is a former White House aide to President Clinton and now the chairman of the House Democratic Conference, and he remains neutral in the presidential race.
